I know someone with a 2 year old daughter whose lips are extremely chapped. Is she too young for the lip balm? Or how about using something like the ABC Lotion? Or maybe some Baby Oil? I use the ABC line on my own daughter and while I use the oil and lotion on her face, I don't generally get it on her lips. So what can I recommend to this person?

I use the lip balm on my kids (3 and 2). I am sure it is fine. I also use the skin conditioning oil around her lips if my daughter (3) gets really cracked dry lips.

Kim,
Thanks for the recommendation. What's your thought about using the baby oil? I have always heard concerns about the SCO because of the nut oils.

Hello!
I use the lip balm on my entire family. We have a zillion of them in all our pockets. I would use it on a baby as well, without hesitation. I would probably avoid the baby line directly on the lips, around them, would be ok, though. Just my 2 cents!
Have a nice day.

Well my daughter is 3 and has eaten nuts so I wasn't worried. Other moms might be so let them know about the nut oil before having them use it. It depends on the person. I knew my daughter was ok. I am sure the baby oil would be great too. I have used this on my face as well as my kids and I am sure they have gotten it on their mouths before. Probably would be just fine.

Not trying to scare you or anything, but just a word of caution. My son is highly allergic to peanuts and he ate quite a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches when he was 3 and then allof a sudden one day while eating a pb&j he immediately broke out in hives and having asthma attack. I thought he was safe too, up to that point. Now, I do not have anything in my house that contains peanuts or may be contanimated with peanuts.
I don't see a problem at all with the lip balm, or our baby oil on the lips, mouth. I feel it's better than any other alternative.

Yeah that sounds like my brother.. Never was allergic to milk till he would like 5 then could eat or drink dairy. But when he would like 14 he changed again and now is fine with dairy. So weird! To me at least. Their should be no problem with the baby line (no nuts) and the lip balm though.

It's interesting because one of my concerns were nut allergies with the SCO.
I guess a recent experience of mine really raised the issue about allergies. For the past week and a half, I've had MASSIVE hives break out EVERYDAY!!!! The itching associated with them was TERRIBLE (drove me close to tears). I tried every product of ours in my inventory (which is varied) and nothing was helping. Even Benadryl wasn't always working. I was sooooooooo miserable. My doctor thinks it's a food allergy (probably some seafood) but we'll never know for sure. ANYWAY.......it FINALLY subsided and for about 2 nights now, I haven't had any outbreaks.
Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Ines, I want to tell you about what has been going on with my son, and what happened to me about 15 years ago.
Two weeks ago, my son started breaking out with hives, and everytime the benedryl would wear off, he would get hives immediately again. I took him to his allergist and he determined it to be not an allergic reaction to any allergen, but a reaction his body is having to a virus. He already takes zyrtec in the evenings and I was to give him Claritin in the mornings for a week or so. He's fine now.
I had this happen to me before too. I was barely 20 years old and had know idea that I was breaking out with hives, didn't know what it was, just thought it was a rash. I watched a movie and tried not to think about it, then after the movie I went to the mirror and my ENTIRE body was covered, the hives were in my mouth and I drove myself to the emergency room and passed out waiting to sign in. I woke up with IV's. monitors, oxygen, heart racing. The Dr's asked me if I had any food allergies and after I said no and went over what I had eaten that day (nothing on "the list"), the doctor said that it's probablya virus and just my body reacting to that virus. I was given steriods and antihistamine and for 2 weeks I would get hives like clock work- I knew down to the minute when the meds were wearing off. The hives were even on the soles of my feet and the inside of my eyelids- just imagine how painful that is! Ouch!
I pray that you have not developed a food allergy, it's difficult. I'm sure the doctor suggested to keep a journal of everything you eat? so that if this happens again, you'll be able to look back and try to narrow down what it is? And take notice if you ever feel your tongue is itchy, and if so- call your doctor immediately. I cannot stress that enough! Doesn't matter if you've never had this happen before, you candevelop adult onset food allergies. Edited by: cassandra

Oh my goodness Cassandra! You basically described what I had. I went to my doctor after about being tortured for 5 days and he put me on a soy and white rice diet. Yuck. After being on it for 2-3 days, the allergy subsided, though, but the worst was the hives on the bottoms of my feet. Gosh - it really made me crazy. It made me want to walk, walk, walk it off!!!!
I'm not sure we'll ever know for sure what it was but it really was scary because once the itching started, it quickly became unbearable and the few nights that the Benadryl didn't work made it seem even worse. And yes, I have to keep a diary of what I ingest.
Nothing this extreme has ever happened in the past. I've only had occasional outbreaks over the past few years. And ironically, most of my outbreaks have occurred when I've been traveling overseas. I know now that I MUST always have Benadryl on me.
Thanks for sharing your story! Let's hope we both have less itchy days!!!

yes, definitely keep benedryl with you
hopefully for you it was some kind of virus thing too.... at least then you wouldn't have to worry about a food allergy
