View Full Version : Is the wording misleading?

Hi Ladies,

I've had a question posed to me and I thought I would get some input before I answer. It's fairly simple but could be misunderstood so I guess that is where I've got the question.

With our company we make 25% from our retails sales from the top, then we get an additional 5% business supply allowance and we can also earn up to 10% commission from our personal sales when we make director (there are other amounts for lower levels).

Ok, here is the question. Do you think it would be misleading to say that you can earn up to 40% commission</span> from your personal sales?

Now it would say "up to" but I think that when most of are looking at new companies, we look at the basic numbers. We see 40%, right? Would you feel like someone lied if you saw the up to 40% and then found out how it was broken down? Is adding UP TO good enough that people wouldn't get confused?

I personally think if anything, it should say up to 35%, but then that doesn't take into account we are getting money for catalogs and such that I think most of us would figure into our bottom line.

OK, I am going in circles here. Time to turn it over to you ladies. LOL

Thanks,
Brenda P.

Hi Brenda,

I think I would say you can earn up to 35% in commission, plus an addition 5% for business supplies. The 5% isn't really a commission, after all, and I think that people would like to see that they get something toward purchasing supplies.

I think that you should list the commission based on personal sales as a separate number from commission based on team sales. This will allow someone who may not want leadership to have an actual percentage to look at.

For instance with HGP we earn 30% on first $1500 and then 40% thereafter on our personal sales. As a team leader we can then earn 3% - 6% on our team sales.

I would include the 5% supply allowance, but let them know that it is not actual cash but supplies.

Hope this helps.

Hi Brenda,

Patti made a good point and Lynn broke it down for you. I would let them know exactly up to what amount they earn on their own personal sales, teamsales, and the supply allowance. It's good to be up front andnot misleading in any way,as it can come back and bite you in thebehind!

I do understand about breaking it down and that's what I do. But this is for a flyer a gal is working on and although she wants to let them know what the real earning potential is, she doesn't want to go into a long explanation. For instance she was working on doing a flyer for booking parties, but wanted to do a little area that simply said something like "Ask me how you can earn up to 40% you become a consultant!" Maybe I should have said that in my original post.

I've been doing DS for awhile and would always sit down with someone and make sure they understand the comp plan prior to signing. I just had not considered including the personal sales commission in the earning percentage. I didn't want to say no just because I'd not thought about it before.

I'm not sure what wording she should use but I would say earn 25% up to 35% I also would keep the 5% supply allowance out of the commisssion, but say it's a bonus or something like that.

Hmmmm,

You might say "Leaders make up to 35% PLUS A 5% Business Supplies
Allowance"...?

How about:
"Everyone *starts* at 25% with the opportunity to earn an extra 10%"

I think that that would be a better way to put it,that way they know its 25%right off the top.smileys/smiley2.gif

Oh, I like that Tammy,

How about this...

Everyone starts at 25% with the opportunity to earn another 10% in addition to the 5% business allowance from each show.

How does that sound? I know it's longer than what she wanted to use, but I think it's better. They can add it all up themselves.

Thanks everyone. I am so glad you all are here.

How about - start your business with 25% commision, plus the opportunity to earn even more! You will also get rewarded withan allowance forbusiness supplies to helpkeep your business going strong!

I think the fewer numbers the better, not because it is misleading, because it is cumbersome to read over and few people really digest what it means anyway.

Yeah I like what you said Brenda...but I also like TMartin's...all the
numbers do get cumbersome, so if you are doing a print ad, I would
put in it what she said. And then when someone contacts you for
more info you could tell them what YOU said. smileys/smiley1.gif
