View Full Version : 21 BIRTHDAY PARTIES

In many westernized countries the 21st birthday is a milestone symbolizing that a youth has come-of-age. Many 21st birthday celebrations can be held at home with a mixture of family and friends. It is traditional to have a highly decorated cake for the birthday guy or gal and to have the same number of lighted candles on the cake as the age of the birthday honoree. At 21, you know what you want and you do not have to go round in circles to find out what kind of birthday you want. You however need to have something spark your imagination so that you can have the best 21st birthday party ideas. You will be inspired by adventure and your theme will certainly have a touch of maturity. This is because you feel at the peak of life and there is no need to take this feeling for granted. Go for something wild so that you can always remember your early days of adulthood. So you’re turning 21 now. You’re an adult now. You could drive and marry and now you can do another adult thing – have a beer. Remember to invite plenty of guests, because you only turn 21 once. Your 21st birthday is an occasion you’ll look back on fondly in the years to come. Having a birthday is considered a special occasion in many different countries, but the 21st birthday is special in many ways. For one reason or another, turning 21 has always been a rite of passage and a great cause of celebration world wide. Of course, in the United States, the 21st birthday marks the final milestone to completing the process of becoming an adult as the doors to taverns, pubs, nightclubs, and bars become open and waiting. Suddenly, that which was secretive and unknown becomes ordinary and, well, to be honest, underwhelming. There are a lot of things I would rather witness than an unsuspecting birthday reveler the morning after an American 21st birthday bar crawl, but that’s
entirely another story for another time.

Honestly, and sadly, I think a lot of it depends on the laws in your country--especially in the Westernized countries. In the United States, once you reach 18 and are considered a legal adult, that's a pretty big deal, and it's as if you transformed overnight. And again, when you turn 21 and can drink alcohol legally, this is also some magic rite of passage. I think we all know that "becoming an adult" has nothing to do with how old you are, but with your experiences, responsibilities, and level of maturity.

Here is my opinion: Every birthday is an important birthday. Every year is another rite of passage. So celebrate every birthday like it's your last! And not only birthdays; celebrate holidays, promotions, moving into a new home, the birth of a child, etc. Just celebrate and enjoy yourself! No need to be all serious about rites of passage.

It may be different in other countries, but in the U.S., I think we focus way too much on age/numbers and not how young we feel, our ability to enjoy life, and the privilege we have to be able to celebrate when so many people can't.

In my country we come-of- age at 18.

we do too! it's called a DEBUT! i had one! we have a tradition that we follow during the event. 18 candles are lit by 18 girls (consisting of your relatives and friends that are closest to your heart) then comes the 18 candles where in the debutant dances with 18 men, starting of with her father- most preferably, to her brothers to her friends, then she saves the last dance for the man closest to her. I AM SO LUCKY I didn't choose any childhood crush for my last dance, or else I would be regretting it right now since the man I married was not part of my childhood, lol! The last dance was taken by my bestfriend, he who is still my best friend. :D

raiundazan--That is so neat. I wish we did stuff like that in America. You can still find some areas in the Southern states that have debutant balls or "Coming-Out" events, but it's pretty rare.
