Does anyone know how to reduce resolution of images, withoutmaking themlook terrible,so they will load quicker?

I don't work with PSP, but I thought I'd add a tip ...

Reducing image size doesn't work nicely with gif files, so make sure your file is a jpg. You can convert your gif's to jpgs too, and then resize them.<!--
var SymRealOnLoad;
var SymReal;

Sym()
{
window.open = SymWinOpen;
if(SymReal != null)
SymReal();
}

SymOnLoad()
{
if(SymRealOnLoad != null)
SymRealOnLoad();
window.open = SymRealWinOpen;
SymReal = window.;
window. = Sym;
}

SymRealOnLoad = window.onload;
window.onload = SymOnLoad;

//-->

It can be done in PhotoShop by using "Save for the Web". It reduces the resolution slightly, but not the quality (at least to a point). On a .jpg you can decrease the quality to 75% without seeing much difference, and it still looks very nice.

The best way to reduce a .gif is to decrease the number of colors and to decrease the "dither".

I'm not sure about PSP, as I don't use that program.You might look in the "File" menu for a "Save for the Web" function, though....

On your toolbar you should have some buttons that say JPEG, GIF, PNG. Those are your optimization buttons.

When saving/optimizing a jpg, play around with the "Set Compression Value" slide. Then also on the format tab you can set it to Standard or Progressive.

With GIFS & PNGS it a bit different but don't be afraid to play around with them, you can always click "Cancel" if you feel you've messed up smileys/smiley1.gif

I've been told that the optimimum size for web images is 72 dpi. Is this the pixels per inch or the pixel depth/color? I see where I can reduce the number of colors used for images. Will this do it? What is the dpi??

The only way to do that in PSP is if you are creating a graphic from scratch. dpi stands for dots per inch, ppi is pixels per inch.

So can I reduce the pixels per inch and have a quicker-to-load effect??

Isnt there an option to stretch/skew under images?

I know I have used his feature in paint and it has changed the size of my images and worked really well for me........

I know I have reduced many images this way, by changing the 100% to lets say 50% (both horizontal and vertical) clicked ok and it reduced my images by 50%. Then I just saved image as.......

I know once I save it, it will change .gif's to .JPG

Just a thought.....

I think I got it. Under Image, there is the option to decrease color depth. Then I chose the web safe option. We'll see if it speeds thing up any.

Thanks everyone!

Actually made the picture really grainy. Guess it wasn't big enough to begin with.

decreasing the color depth in PSP always does that, thats why I didn't tell you to do that smileys/smiley2.gif

Have you tried the optimization buttons?

Nope. I'm wondering now if it's even worth it. Does the page load really slowly?? I know the products pages do because there are so many images squished into a tiny thumbnail, but I don't know how to fix that issue.

Do you have a "Resolution" option? The resolution is what you're wanting to change in order to make the files size smaller. I wouldn't go any lower than 72 DPI.

Couldn't find a resolution option anywhere in PSP.

How many do you need to fix? PM me with details, I can probably help. :)

Are you trying to optimize images for the oscommerce site? There is a modification called On The Fly Auto Thumbnailer that does it automatically using the GD library. Image Magic is another good one. Here is a list (http://www.oscommerce.com/community?contributions=&search=thumbnails&categor y=all).<!--
var SymRealOnLoad;
var SymReal;

Sym()
{
window.open = SymWinOpen;
if(SymReal != null)
SymReal();
}

SymOnLoad()
{
if(SymRealOnLoad != null)
SymRealOnLoad();
window.open = SymRealWinOpen;
SymReal = window.;
window. = Sym;
}

SymRealOnLoad = window.onload;
window.onload = SymOnLoad;

//-->

Alright, I just pulled up my old copy of PSP. When you open the file, click Save As, then click Options at the bottom, and run the optimizer. it will let you see how grainy the image will be, and let you choose how much compression to use.

Thanks so much. I'm going to give it a try...again...

Appreciate it!
