Hi there! I've done a ton of research on these boards as well as on the internet about the custom letters business. I think this would be an awesome way to make some extra cash during the seasons.
For the holiday targetted seasons (Easter and Christmas) when do you start your big advertising? How far in advance do you start promoting yourself to get the orders in time to mail them out? Obviously I've missed Easter for starting the business, but I want to time myself right for Christmas.
I'm going to start getting stuff up about the tooth fairy since that could be an all year service.
Do any of your list your letters on eBay?
thanks!

I think starting it a couple months before is good enough....I don't know much about this but as a customer I would like to see it couple months before.

I haven't done Easter letters, but I can speak to the Santa Letters. October seems a good time to begin light advertising (or "planting seeds" as I refer to it). Then, kick up advertising into high gear in November. Remember to be descrete in your advertising. You want to enhance the Santa experience, not blow it. :) If you are really anxious about advertising, you could probably start mid-September and go the "100 days til Christmas" route. Personally, I find mid-Oct a good time to start.
Also, I have sold letters on ebay. You can do well, but remember all the fees that you will incur (action posting, paypal fees, etc). Also, your item must be unique. If you just post "Santa Letter - $10" and nothing else, people are going to shop by price. Just like any other product, you have to prove why yours is better. :)
Good luck!
