Hello,

I want to start my own business making dry products to add to foods because I enjoy quick cooking and have a number of recipes can you do this from home. I know that it isnot cooking so do you have to go thru the fda. I have my own ideals because I make lots of products that are louisiana style and southern style and I have more of a market for that in my area. Any ideals.

I'm not sure of the laws in the US, but in Canada ANYTHING that is assembled must be done so in an inspected and approved kitchen.

Which is how the folks that sell fruit and veggies on the side of the road get away with it - their product has not been processed in any way.

But those who make jams from those fruits must have an inspected kitchen before they can legally sell their products.

So because you plan to assemble products, you would need the same.

Best of luck!

Hi,
Yes you need to have an approved kitchen. The FDA offers guidlines and rules to follow, but to get licensed, you can contact your local health department or your state dept of agriculture. They will give you the specs on what's required for an approved kitchen. The state should be able to give you the instructions you need for labeling too. It sounds difficult, but its really not. I got my start this way and my husband built an approved catering kitchen off our garage. I had to get a city license and health and fire department inspection. We grew out of our kitchen very quickly and now lease facility and havea small bakery restuarant now.

If you have a dream go for it.
