and if so, what is the trick?

Hi Codypup,
I'm sure I have made over $3 an hr. Probably the most I've made is 4$ an hour. There is no trick to it. The hourly rate is going to change from hour to hour, because it depends on a person's speed for one. And two, it depends on the msg. volume and how many words there are in each msg. You will never make a steady exact amt. for each hour you are on. Because the volume of calls coming in is going to change, and that goes for the number of words in each call also.
No one can tell how much a person is going to say in each msg., so that makes it hard to determine how much one can make too. But you can make $100 per pay period with this, which would average out to $200 a month. The most I've made in a pay period was $81. But again, this all depends on msg. volume, a person's typing speed and the no. of words in each msgs that comes through in any given hour.
Hope this helps.

If I average what I make hourly, it's right about $3.00, occasionally a little higher...and I'm a fast typist. I try not to think of my QT income as hourly, but rather I work throughout the day while my son naps or I'm surfing around online, and aim to type no less than 2,000 words for that day ($5.00). That way I know I have at least $150 for the month. Otherwise though, I think you're right about where you should be, making $3 hourly.

I like the work, but it does feel ridiculously not worth my time. I track all my word counts in excel and I can't believe how long it takes to even make $10. I only do it if I'm done with all my real work for the day that pays more than peanuts. But, it is pretty fun and I'm hoping to get on with iDictate if I can keep this up long enough...

How can it be legal for a company to offer a job that clearly pays well below minimum wage?? What a racket! They're running a sweat shop. They've consciously designed the job in order to make it virtually impossible for anyone to even make minimum wage, which is supposed to be the bottom of the barrel wage here in the US. Why are they not shut down by the US labor dept?

As independent contractors, there is no minimum wage. We are contracted to do the work for a certain rate. If we agree to it and sign the contract, then obviously we agree to the pay rate in which they are willing to pay. It is also stated VERY clearly that this is meant to be filler work, and by no means a full time position.
I don't understand why people don't understand that when you are an independent contractor, there are different laws and rules.

It doesn't matter if it's filler work or full time - minimum wage applies to both. I do understand, quite well actually, the difference between contract work and W2 employment. But my feeling is still that it is highly unethical for a company to knowingly offer a job (contract or otherwise) where it's physically impossible to make more than $3 per hour - welcome to the 21st century sweatshop.

Well, I happened to be very lucky and land a job doing live chat support, so I do the transcription while I am waiting for chats to come in from the website. So I consider it bonus money and a way to fight the boredom when I don't have a chat.
Quite simply it comes down to personal choice. If you choose not to do it, then fine, but that is you.
I for one like the transcription work, and it isn't like it's hard physical work for pennies....if it was, I wouldn't be able to do it. It's actually quite fun, and I don't consider it to be "sweat shop" work.
But to each their own.

Anyone who is working for $3/$4 an hour should be taken behind the toolshed and beat with a stick. I'm sorry but that is just ridiculous. AND to pay self-employment taxes on top of that. I am speechless.

These seem to be pretty harsh words. Some people have no other option. For some this $3-$4 an hour puts food on the table that may not be there. You shouldn't be so quick to criticize. If you don't want to do it then don't, but don't put others down.

Are you serious? Like someone said above... that's slave shop pay! These companies should be reported and reported and reported until they get fined or imprisoned!!
And when people are willing to work $3.00 an hour that will bring down all our wages eventually.

Actually, the company can not control how many messages come in, or the amount of words that are in each message. Nor do they control how many people are logged in at any given time to do this work. It is paid per word, not by the hour. So..... say what you want. It is no different than a call center job paying by minute talk time.....they can't control how many calls come in or how long those calls last. So, if a worker happens to be on when call volume is slow and the customers don't gab your ear off, then they don't make much either.
Seriously, people shouldn't be so quick with their rudeness. I will work for whatever wage I choose, that is the great part about being INDEPENDENT, I can choose who I work for, the hours I work, and what I get paid, so can you. Isn't it lovely?
I work more than one job at once, and by combining them, I stay busy and earn a decent hourly wage. But at any rate, as long as someone isn't asking you to pay their bills for them, it should really be none of your concern what they make. The way I see it, as long as a person is trying and is making some money, that is all that counts.

For those of you who have a problem with $3 an hour for work, please move on. This is a thread for happy tater people, which we all are. We don't mind working for $3 an hour, that's why we do it. We come into this with our eyes open, and yes we still do it.
For someone who is out of a job and living on the streets, this $3 would be heaven to them. And for some of us it is heaven and a God send, because it's all we can do. So, please stop interfering with our happy community here. We choose to do this job. Does that make us crazy or insane? I think not. It is not a "sweat shop" job assomeone put it. I doubt that any of us sweat while we do this job (unless we are sitting in an 80 degree room with no a/c http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif).
As mentioned above, it is not hard physical labor. We're not committed to any hours and we're not being forced to do it. This is 'free will' work. We do it because we have the free will to do it, just as you have the 'free will' not to do it. We like the flexibility it affords us and it's a fun job.
Now, if it was a job that made me commit to certain hrs. and a certain no. of hours, had harsh rules to follow, threatened to let me go, if I didn't work it when they wanted me to and it paid $3 an hour, I would definitely choose NOT to do it.
But as stated many, many times in this thread and others (what is it that you all don't get?!!!!!!), we DON'T MIND doing this work. We don't feel it's slave work. There are people in other countries that work for less than this.
While you were putting us down, I was at the grocery store buying food and necessities I needed with YES the so-called slave wages I earned from Quicktate. So, there!!! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
Please leave us alone in this community. We are VERY, VERY HAPPY here.
I'm done.

Well I guess it might be a nice little supplemental income to disability, social services, etc. I'm not saying this applies to you or anyone specific, just the only way I can see how it is a plus. You can make so much and still be on disability, food stamps, etc. so perhaps this is the perfect job in those instances.

Or else as stated, filler work for while another wah job is slow, or when you are bored and have extra time to make extra money. It is the perfect job for ANY instance where someone needs to make extra money on their own schedule.
But anyway.....I'm bored with this, so off to tatering I go.

Finally, someone gets it, (other than those of us that are taterin') It is a SUPPLEMENTAL income. And it can supplement any job. You don't have to be on social services or whatever. For me it supplements a couple of other WAHJs I have that are seasonal jobs. When work from my other WAHJs is slow, this helps to makeup for the deficiency in my income.
But I think I'll join msmetzer and off a taterin I go too.

I don't mind QT's pay, because I don't treat it as a real job. Its something I do when my other jobs are slow or during the 3 to 4 months a year I'm between contracts with my main income. I have 4 companies that I work for, including QT, so I'm always doing something. And I can QT while doing any of the others sometimes. Heck, sometimes I'm taterin' while crafting in EQ2, depending on call volume. Its a supplement, as well as experience towards other transcription opportunities. I sure like that deposit every couple weeks regardless of how much it is. My husband is a a tater, too.

Alythara,
I'm with you I love that CHA-CHING of the payment that hits my PayPal acct. every two weeks too. I don't care if it's just 2 cents, it's mine and I earned it doing a fun easy job. It's a no stress job. And it can be done between other jobs, or while watching TV. I guess those folks that have a problem with it, aren't good at multi-tasking. Since I am not on disability, unemployment, welfare or any other support, I do not know their regulations, but I would guess this would be a good for someone who was on assistance.
For those that view this as "sweat shop work" I will put it rather simply;
If I type 528 words... I can get 3 lbs of bananas.
If I type 876 words... I can get a gallon of milk.
If I type 3596 words, I can get 4lbs of strawberries (yeah thats alot of strawberries... but my kids are addicted to them lol)
For those 5000 simple words... I get breakfast, snack & dessert!!
The best part is... I do it while coloring with my toddler smileys/smiley1.gif

We are not actually working the entire hour. We only are working, technically, when messages come up on our computer, and what you make depends on how fast you can type. They pay per the word NOT per the hour. This is also a great way to get the experience needed for transcription companies that require a few years of transcription experience.

And when people are willing to work $3.00 an hour that will bring down all our wages eventually.
I doubt anyone is only making $3.00/hour. You'd have to be extremely slow on the keyboard to do that.
AtQT's rate of pay, if you typed 50 wpm, you'd be making $5-7.00/hour. At 100 wpm, you'd be making $10-14.00/hour.
Speed is the key.
And, as mentioned above, it's good practice for better-paying tx jobs later on, including iDictate.

Your words are indeed harsh. This is the only thing that some of us can do. I rather enjoy it myself. Some people can do other things and that is absolutely good for them. smileys/smiley32.gif I am sure that if people are unhappy with the pay then they would look elsewhere. However for those who are happy they stay. The choice is really for the person. For example if you yourself worked for them and thought that $3/$4 an hour was a waste then you wouldn't complain. You would just find a job elsewhere. I applaud those who do what it takes to survive in this economy. I do what I have to do these days to take care of my family and make ends meet. That's what its about mostly for everyone. Making Ends Meet.

Anyone who is working for $3/$4 an hour should be taken behind the toolshed and beat with a stick. I'm sorry but that is just ridiculous. AND to pay self-employment taxes on top of that. I am speechless.
We are not actually working the entire hour. We only are working, technically, when messages come up on our computer, and what you make depends on how fast you can type. They pay per the word NOT per the hour. This is also a great way to get the experience needed for transcription companies that require a few years of transcription experience.
smileys/smiley32.gif smileys/smiley36.gif smileys/smiley32.gif smileys/smiley36.gif Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't make three dollars an hour yesterday. I also wasn't receiving a constant stream of messages, and there are several other variables, but I was signed in for over twelve hours and made only about twenty-four dollars.
But I'm not going to complain because I need to make ends meet somehow, and I'm happy to have *some* kind of money coming in. So, if anybody wants to drag me out back somewhere for a beating, go ahead. Just make it quick so I can get back to 'Tating.

[I doubt anyone is only making $3.00/hour. You'd have to be extremely slow on the keyboard to do that.
AtQT's rate of pay, if you typed 50 wpm, you'd be making $5-7.00/hour. At 100 wpm, you'd be making $10-14.00/hour.
Speed is the key. ]
Somehow those numbers don't figure. I would be shocked to know if someone who worked for SpeakWrite made that amount of money.
Using your calculations, at SpeakWrite one would make:
$10.00 to $14.00 an hour (at 50 wpm)
$20.00 to $28.00 an hour (100 wpm)
Given that Speakwrite pays 1/2 cent per word versus Quicktate's 1/4 cent per word.
Also, as I've read, there is not even a pedal involved so that should take even more time.
Just saying.
I'm glad it's fun for you guys. That is a plus.Edited by: TypingTina

Okay fellow Taters. I've got all of this figured out.
This person actually works for a competitor of Quicktate who was sent to discourage everyone who works for them. By doing so they hope to drive there sales down.
That's got to be the answer!!!!smileys/smiley36.gifsmileys/smiley36.gifsmileys/smiley36.gif Don't give up fellow Taters!!! We shall not be discouraged. Just think, the time you are spending on here complaining about their pay. You could actually be looking for a job for yourself that you would be happy with!!!smileys/smiley4.gif

Not sure how you can do it while 'coloring with a toddler' or doing much else. They seem to come in steady enough not to be able to concentrate on much else. I spend more time 'shooshing' the kids so I can hear. Hard to do with another job because Murphy's Law - calls or other transcriptions, etc. all seem to come in at the same time. That's why I would like to devote my time to QT only and at least make close to $5. I'm very fast - is there anyway to pull in more transcriptions?

It's quite easy... I color with one hand, type with the other... or listen to the message while coloring in an ear, then I start typing. I have incredible speed even one handed! Lol Besides, I don't have to color in the lines with her smileys/smiley36.gif
I was normally doing QT while I was doing my other job... but I had to stop. I felt I wasn't being productive enough at my job, so until I'm caught up there a bit, I will only tater late at night or after I reach my budgeted hours for the month.
I wish I knew a way to "pull in" more... but I don't! Sorry

Even tho this is a Tater thread... I'll let you know quickly....
They are not even accepting applications now. There are qualifications, minimum requirements for equipment and software, and you have scheduled times to work. You will also need to buy a $75 foot pedal, if hired.
Although they don't pay as well... I still love the flexibility of QT and don't think I'd even apply at SpeakWrite now. JMHO
Now let's get back to Taterville!

Obviously I shld have gone to this Quicktaters forum before I went to the other one.............shldn't they combine these if they are the same; anyway, on the other one I asked about the pay which is why I shld have gone here first. This is obviously a SUPPLEMENTAL income that seems very fun so when I get a full time wahj I'll come back to this.
thanks
