I used to hand-code sites in like the 90's and then I started having kids and new things were invented, like css and php and I just recently jumped into wordpress, i used it to build this site

http://www.russillospizza.com

and then I wanted to give myself credit for it, but I couldn't with such a cheesy old fashioned personal site, so I made my own site, and moved my blog over to

http://www.lisarussell.org

(categories are supposed to be listed on that grey bar- what's up with that- I'm not excluding them?? ALSO- why is the word pages there, instead of just listing the pages?)

and I just love it so much that now I'm thinking I want to do this forever!

I have a few other clients that I'm going to switch their sites over to WP and I have a few more to build.

What on earth do people charge for this, though?

I billed the first one at $25/hour, which included writing a month's worth of content and securing exclusive copyrights to a gallery of 500 images, also uploading and cataloging the images owned by the company. I set up a lot of categories (that don't show up yet because there's nothing posted there) and since the staff has the ability to submit content, I need to add images and maintain the site. So Initial setup was 65 hours. I expect monthly maintenance to be about 5 hours. I this crazy? Too much or too little? Not the way things are done? i am really making this up as I go along.

Hi,

Your two links look good! I love being in the design industry and couldn't think of doing anything else.

When I started out on my own, I researched other companies within my local area and surrounding areas. I also did some salary research for people with positions kinda like what I did. I was always told that normally people will obtain multiple qoutes on projects. They normally put them into three catagories, Cheap, Middle of the road and High End. People tend to stick with the middle of the road because not everyone wants to pay high end but if you come in to low they might not think you are qualified for the job.

I put my pricing a little above middle of the road and then based three different pricing levels. I charge one hourly rate for maintance which is my cheapest rate, a different hourly rate for graphic/print design and then a higher hourly rate for web design and development.

I will say that I charge more than you are for my maintance packages but agian that is based on my area.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, they're wordpress sites. I just put out a few more bids at $60 an hour because in our area the rates are $50-$150. The $50/hr designers arent' serious, but they seem to have a lot of clients. 6 yrs ago when I moved here NONE of the businesses had websites.

I plan to do 5 more at $60/hour and then increase my rate, when I have more in my portfolio.

I actually have my next 5 clients already, and I turned away work (actually I told him I'm not available for another month) i want to make these first few websites very different from each other. Different looks, different features. One of them will be Joomla- I have to say I hate Joomla, I used it a few years ago and there were too many options that seemed to not work together, i didn't udnerstand the way the site elements worked together- it seemed to be a lot of redundancy. So I'm eager to see how it's changed in 3 yrs or if my perception of it will have evolved now that I've worked with WordPress.

Thanks so much for that advice. Seeing what others charge really blew me away. I wish I had done this a year ago.

Your sites look great. I am also a wordpress lover. I think you're doing great and I have no doubt you'll make a successful business creating the sites. I just started with wordpress myself a couple of months go, and I landed my first site for an eating establishment recently and I am very excited.

Best to you!

Funny I just realized we use the same Theme. I love that Magazine them. There are also some REALLY awesome developer themes which are better than these free ones. I am using a great premium theme for a new site for the restaurant. I just pass on the cost of the premium theme to the client.

really- how long did you use it? It worked well for me for a few months and then just totally started failing in the graphics department. I'm not sure hat to make of it, so I have a whole new install - you're talking about the momochrome theme, right? that I used for the restaurant? I love the layout, the slideshow but the process of inputting the filenames into the bottom fields makes it impossible to use for teaching people how to maintain their own sites, so I haven't used that again. I got a new magazine theme, it's a WYSIWYG wordpress theme, similar to atahulapa, I think it's called berits. I don't know I haven't played with it yet. For now, I love the flexibility of atahualpa and have used that for like 20 websites so far.

no - sorry for the confusion, I am doing a restaurant with a paid theme. I'll show you when I am done. It is a little more confusing than some of the other themes I have used but it is what they picked.

I LOVE the atahualpa them too. I have it on a couple of sites. Another flexible one is haha flexiblity2, it is in use here: http://www.traintobeabookkeeper.com

I'm a member of Theme Wars and they have an awesome new theme out that I want to buy the developer license too. It is very flexible and you can change the colors and well, all kinds of things.

Ps. I called our theme the magazine theme but it's really the atahualpa theme lol sorry for the confusion. I do have one magazine theme I am using at http://www.fromideatolaunch.com but something is buggy about it right now. I wanted to change the layout of the front but it won't let me save anything right now... arrg.

Another theme I enjoy is here but I don't know what it is called right now, http://www.barrypublishing.com

Wordpress is really great and I'm a real lover. I only started using it a couple of months ago, maybe three now, and it's so simple to learn and manipulate.

Stephanie your site looks great, I sent your VA link to my Dad- he's a real estate agent- he wants to hire someone to keep his MLS listings up to date. he was under the impression that a VA couldn't be a long-term relationship. He wants ONE person to learn his way and then do it for him without any further training. I hope he contacts you.

I'm going to use this now, it is my old WAHM user name. I couldn't remember the password for ages and one day I accidentally signed on to it lol. So I'm keeping it now.
