Government GrantsARE legit, but they're mostly for continuing your education, grants for non-profit organizations, and the like. My mom's friend got a $300 grant to continue her educationto become a nurse. It's usually very hard to acquire one and you much have your ducks in a row when applying.
As far as the ridicules "Get a Gov. grant to measure the flow of ketchup" or some nonsense like that it's really just to drive sales for their book.

Samantha is right. Most legitimate grants are for education and non-profits and it's not as easy as they make it seem. Some of these "grant companies" have been known to encourage people to file the paperwork to be classified as a non-profit in order to qualify for various grants. They tell you you can use them to pay bills, buy a car etc... if you get caught doing this you could be charged with fraud.
