Hi Guys!

Here's my dilemma. I have a party that is closed but I'm still waiting on the last couple of checks. Our month end is, of course, Tuesday 1/31 at midnight. I won't have those checks by then. Our incentive for the month was for holding 4, 8, or 12 parties. I can't get the other 2 parties closed before the end of the month (we had hoped to, but it won't happen) so I'll be short of the 12 by 1 or 2. But I'll still get a decent award for having 8. Here's the tricky part. Our Leadership Summit is in February and they will be recognizing the top person (maybe top 3?) for December and January sales. I have December wrapped up. I know for sure with my sales as is right now at least one person will beat me for January. But with the show I've closed but don't have all the money on, I may be #1, or I may not. But I'll certainly have a better chance at it. So, do I send in the order and worry about the rest of the checks later (I could have the party shipped to me just in case she doesn't get them in the mail), or do I just say "you win some you lose some" and let the sales go for February? What would you do?

I have put parties in without all the checks in hand - but I have had them shipped directly to me. That way, you are at least partially covered if you don't get paid. I have to say, though, that I have never not gotten paid, people are basically honest. Follow your gut on this one (but for me, I'd go for it and enter the party!!)

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Patti, this host lives a ways away but it's not like it's someplace I never go. I'm in her area at least once a month. I'm still mulling. I hate to be greedy, but if I find out that I could have been number one and didn't do it, I'll kick myself!

I would say that you could go ahead a close the party, but not just for the purpose of being number one for your convention. You've got Dec. already so you will be recognized. Personally, I would let Jan. go to someone else. You know how you like to be recognized, someone else will like it too. smileys/smiley4.gif

I would however close the class if it had been dragging on. I'd want to get the orders to my customers.

Not sure I was a help. smileys/smiley36.gif

Lisa,

GO FOR IT!!! I would definately have the order shipped to YOUR house and tell the hostess that it's your policy when you don't have all the money in hand to keep yourself covered. SHE WILL UNDERSTAND! So instead of looking at it negatively as "I may get ripped on these orders but I also might loose a chance at being top in sales", look at it as "For one drive to deliver her orders, you might end up as top sales!" You can always re-sell the items if they do NOT end up getting paid for by the time the order arrives. You worked HARD, you did WELL, you probably earned an award for your efforts, it would be a shame to lose out on that just because someone didn't 'get the check in the mail'.

What about having the hostess sign the checks over to herself and giving you her credit card number?

YOU GO GIRL!!!! It is NOT greed...it is the possibility to be awarded for your efforts!!!

I've asked her about a credit card. She doesn't have that or a debit card either. I find that frequently around here. Me, I never carry cash anymore just my debit! smileys/smiley36.gif

My husband says to just hold on to it. He doesn't think I need to spend the gas to drive and deliver it. And I'll still get something for being in the top 5 for the month (I hope, I should be up there anyway). So that was his take on it. I'm still thinking.

I would go with your gut. I think it would also depend on how well I knew the hostess.

Do you know the hostess or the guests? I would close the show and have the packages delivered to you if it is not a long distance to travel. I do have reservations about not having the check on hand if it is a sizable amount. I would forgo the December leadership if it meant that I would be held accountable for non payment and reversed commission if you have to send the items back. Seems like it would be too much trouble at stake in order to get an award that you have already received.

Can you tell I am not much of a risk taker?

I'm thinking I'm going to wait. I don't want to, but my DH is right about driving and I won't want to whent he time comes. I know that much. But I'm really not going to like conceding either. The person who I know is beating me right now is my former manager and she's gets a little "upity" (ok not just a little and she's usually that way) so beating her would thrill me. But then, I've done that for the past 4 months too, so maybe it is her turn. Oh well, such is life!

I enter parties all the time without having the checks in hand. I get to know my hostesses so well, I couldn't imagine one of them not sending the money. I've never had that happen and I've only had 2 bounced checks in 4.5 years! I think that's pretty good.

My husband has a store front business and gets at least 1 bounced check a month. I take SO many more checks than he does, so I know I'm doing pretty darn well.

I would enter the party, but that's just me.

This host I don't know really well and I tend to have people who forget to mail the checks for a couple of days. One back in December (my current host booked from her) didn't mail the check for more thana week. I finally called after about 10 days and asked and she said "oh I couldn't remember how much it was for". So, you just don't send the check rather than call and ask? smileys/smiley5.gif I had guests from her party calling me to find out why they hadn't gotten their orders! So, I'm hesitant to do that and have the party shipped to her. I think I'll just wait and have a better Feb. because of it.

Oh Susan, I got your catalogs yesterday and they had some GREAT ideas I can implement!! Thanks bunches!!

Hi Lisa,

No matter what, it sounds like you did an outstanding job!!! Being recognized for just the one month is thrilling but I do understand wanting to beat the other lady I don't care for upity types myself so I know what you mean.... if it's not this time, with the way you are going - it will be next time!! :)

From a different perspective, how important is it for you to be #1?

Sure, recongition is awesome. smileys/smiley32.gifBut I'd rather be well balanced then #1. I've watched many of the #1, and then looked at their other numbers (and in all truth be told, I'm almost embarrassed!)

Do what is best for you. If you trust the hostess and her guests, place the order. If not, don't put yourself in jeopardy for a title that changes every month. You already know you are #1, and that is what matters.

Best of luck!

Debbie

Debbie,

I think that's the conclusion I've finally come to. I'm not going to risk sending the party in since I don't know this host very well and I don't want to have to take the orders to her later. So, I'm just leaving it as is, and taking whatever it is I get. I know my former manager has worked really hard for this month and as much as I don't really like her, she deserves to be 1st for the amount of effort she put in. And who knows, maybe she'd beat me anyway. There's still today left to put parties in and I only know an estimate of her sales as of yesterday morning. So, we shall see what happens!
