Hey everyone! I'm very interested in the field of event planning. The only experience I have is planning my own wedding (all of it) my baby showers, my sons birthday party, etc. I receive compliments from them all, so I was considering trying to provide this service.I guess I'm just looking for a little advice or anything useful. I'm a stay at home mom to two boys under 4 , andI am located in Los Angeles county. Thanks!

Make a portfolio of all the "events" you have planned. Pics of invitations, cakes, decor and write up a slip for each event with the details.

Then advertise that you are opening a Event Planning Business. You can advertise for free on Craigslist and on many websites- go with local mommy sites as this is a good source for clients. Check with your child's preschool or school to see if you can send a flyer home about your business. Place flyers with tear offs or business cards in cofee shops, toy stores, bakeries, indoor children's play places, anywhere they will let you.

Let you friends and acquaintances know this is what you are doing and if there is anything you can do for them, as a start up you would appreciate it.

I mentioned on a local mommy site thread that this is what I really want to do and within hours I had a reply that another mom would like help with her daugthers 4th birthday in March. I have a theme already and we are meeting in Janaury to hammer out the details. I will not be charging her for my services, just the costs of the products, if she likes me she will tell everyone and I will have a client for life.

Best of Luck

As luck would have it, I decided I wanted to do this, and I mentioned it to one person. I now have my first official wedding, baby shower and child's birthday party. Getting started was easier than I thought.

Now to put together my website and professional image :)

All of you should check out the products we have at Uppercase Living! Click below on "Express Yourself".

These products could be a great "tool" for some of your events.

You can also promote your business through a website (even if it is just local).

You can showcase your skills on the site. (see my signature)

Good luck with everything

It's such an exciting field to be in - you're going to have a ball! Check out www.SpecialEvents.com and bizbash.com - subscribe to their magazines. You'll also want to check out lots of event planning blogs for ideas: www.MixMingleGlow.com is a great one and so is www.HostessBlog.com. Have you checked out any industry events like through ISES, MPI, ABC, NACE, etc? There are so many great ones in L.A. you're going to have no problem finding a ton of resources!
