Jacob'smom to become an agent in most states requires a prelicensing course and then a state test. Some states may require a sponsoring companyand some may not. Let me know what state your in and I will get you some information.

Just to be upfront depending on the products you wish to sell you may have to set aside time to see people outside the home. With that being said you may be able to sell medicare supplements from home. Right now is a great time to get into the financial services industry. For the driven person you can have the opportunity to make some great income.

Thanks for the info. Cornelius. I live in WV. I really do not have the slightest idea what to sell or what to even start with. I have been thinking about going back to school for some type of finacial courses, but again not sure where to start. With the economy in the shape it is now, I'm not sure what to do.

From what I can see, WV prelicensing can be done online, classroom or self-study. 40hrs. for Life/Accident Sickness or 40 hrs. Property/Casualty. 40hrs. Personal Lines.

If you want to work from home your best choices are probably the Life/Health Insurance License. You will be able to market Life, Health Insuranceand Fixed/Indexed annuities with that license. Your first challenge will be training. Yet you can get licensed first and then worry about contracting with a company. Let me just say you will probably get contacted by different marketing organizations. If they contact you ask them who owns the clients you bring in. In most instances your first clients will be family and friends. Then ask if there is a noncompete clause within the contract? Then ask if you attain a certain commission level is that permanent or can you be rolled back due to production quotas?

As far as the economy goes, the producers are producing. People are looking for safety so fixed products are selling, and there's always a market for Term insurance. Don't look at this as a short term decision. Consider the long term vision of the industry. You can write your own ticket with a Life/Health license and then expand into investments if you so choose. There's quite a bit of hype going around so just remember when looking at any company to market with it's what's in black and white that counts.

Cornelius, since you seem to be very educated in the subject, perhaps you can help me out with some info.I currently work from home, but in the cutomer service industry and have been wanting to get away from being stuck on a phone with scripted phone calls all day. The thought of insurance really gets my interest, as it is very diverse and you work with different people in different situations. I've been looking to come into this industry for some time now. I would love to have any info as far as training and licensinggoes. I am located in Florida. I see in a previous post that you can even get your training online. Could you please tell me anything that might help me get started? Thanks.

Here's some Florida licensing info. These are a couple the organization i'm with uses.

http://www.adbanker.com/faq.aspx

http://www.ableincorporated.com/clp/R000183-FFCF0.aspx

Online is available. When I took my prelicensing I used an online course, but I also purchased a book/study guide. When you study and test just learn the information and don't over think it. The test from what I experienced, (Different states have different test) all seem to play on words. Read the questions slowly and what our for words like "except".
Just make sure you read all the questions...

Here are some message boards you can read to get an idea of the industry.

http://www.americaninsurancebroker.com/

***Just so you know for the most part it's a 100% commission industry if you looking to work form home, but with the licensing you can work in a State farm. All State, AAA or whatever office also. You can get the Life/Health and the P/C..If that's the route you would like to go, you should stop by an office and just talk to someone, they may have some sort of licensing training program. In this industry, don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to tell people no thank you all I wanted was information. If you see an opportunity with any company/person you will contact them when you make a decision that's in your best interest.

Well I hope this helps and if you need any other info. please feel free to ask. If I don't have any answer, I will try to find someone who can give an answer.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment, but I just pass on what others have told informed me. This is an exciting everyday learning industry.

Hi everyone. I'd love to get back into insurance. I was licensed in Tx for both life/health and property/casualty but let my license expire when I had my daughter 4 yrs ago.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting my license back?

Any info will be appreciated.

So, Cornelius, what will you be selling now? I spoke to you on the phone before regarding..I can't remember their name now..but they sold mostly aig insurance, I'm still looking for someone to mentor me, i thought of metlife and american general but they are captive, although, they pay a salary in the long run, the commission is pretty low. I'm the one that lives in Castro Valley, just curious what your up to now?

Hello Lani. I don't remember if you are licensed or not, but In Calif. you can just go get licensed and then look for a carrier/organization to market with.
Usually there's a trade off when going with a carrier that will pay a salary, they will lower the commission schedules. If your just looking for training you could go with one of them and when you feel comfortable you can just make a decision to stay or go. Just make sure whatever you do know who owns the client you bring in and if there is a noncompete of any sort.

As far as the products I market, well of course Life products, Mortgages, Pre-Paid Legal, Discount Dental Plans, and a Debt Reduction Plan. I am in the process of getting the series 65 (registered Investment adviser).

At HBW American General is one of our main carriers, but we as independent agents can write with whomever we so choose. we also have other companies to write with such as Banner, West Coast, ING, Prudential, and if we as agents want to offer a carrier HBW doesn't have we have the ability to go out and contract with the carrier and offer it to our clients. As a side note there are no licensing requirements nationwide to offer our mortgage program. If you have any furthur questions you can email me directly. I understand you asked the question, but I don't know if the board mods alow the answers your looking for in their forum. Take care..

Yeah, I would love the freedom to sell different ones, remember I did sign up w/ HBW and the guy down in Southern CA talked so fast. I've learned since when it comes to insurance, i need someone local but I think they wouldn't let me switch. I know most captives , the clients you bring w/ ends up being owned by them but i think Mass is different, Mass Mutual so i'm checking them out too. thanks, too bad they won't let me switch, otherwise maybe you could've trained me since we are local. I think it's okay in this forum, to bring up what I brought up , they just don't like you advertising here only in the advertising section but if someone is asking , I don't see that as advertising, if the other person is the one inquiring.

This is something I have considered for years, but the thought of dealing with people face to face in regards to insurance is not that appealing. Is it realistic to consider this as a potential career where business is primarily conducted online?

Thanks!

I am writing this post in reference to (smw1974) about becoming an insurance agent in Texas. I have looked for sites to help me find out how to become an agent in Texas, and the most helpful site that I have found has been "its your inheritance. com". I hope that this helps.:)
