Question for any FD...
Do I charge my local sales tax? And what do I charge for shipping? I have an open house at 10 am CST tomorrow so I am hoping for an answer tonight or early tomorrow AM if anyone can assist! Thanks!http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

Here in Michigan I am required to collect sales tax. I needed to get a sales tax license. The state sends me paperwork that I fill out once a year (because my sales aren't in the hundreds of thousands yet...smileys/smiley2.gif) and remit a portion of the sales tax I collected. Each state may vary.

You do not have to charge shipping if you do not want to. You pay shipping on orders you place with UB. If you want to get reimbursed some of that to help control your costs, then you can charge shipping. I charge $1.50 per order, which is in line with or less than what many other direct sales companies charge. I have had no complaints from customers...they expect there is shipping. I do not charge shipping at workshops or open houses at my home. They come to me, so I save on gas. Plus it is sort of an extra perk for coming to my house.
Hope this helps.

Here in Utah, I do charge sales tax. However it is a bit different because I also pay sales tax to the company, so I don't have to do a quarterly payment to the state. Basically I am just collecting back what I paid. I do, however, have to do a schedule C when I do myincome taxes.
The sales tax is different in each city here, so I just charge my city rate since that is where my home business is located. I would be forever confused if I tried to remember each city ratehttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Check with your city office and they will be able to tell you if they require you to have a business license and how to charg the tax and pay it and all that.
