We have been talking for quite some time on here about the economy and whether it is affecting our lives and businesses. Well it affected my kids Trick-or-Treating, and they noticed!

My town always has their Trick-or-Treat on the same night every year, and my kids always go to the same neighborhood. Do you know they got less candy this year? In years past they would get 2-3 pieces or even a handfull per house. This year they got one piece per house and many houses ran out. I can't really say there were more kids out this year, or less house participating either.

Now as a mom, I don't really care, they went out, got some candy, and had some fun. It's all good. But my 10yo and my 8yo noticed that their "haul" was less this year AND BLAMED IT ON THE ECONOMY! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif

They are preceptive, I guess they do pay attention to the news whenI have it on. It was all I could do not to laugh! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Yes Kristie, my kids and I both noticed a difference as well.

My kids also stated that people were giving 1 piece of candy instead of several like other years.

I agree though, they still had fun, and got more candy than they needed anyway! lol......................

LOL...my kiddos had the opposite. We went to our neighborhood first, and each house said "We don't get many trick or treaters, so here" and gave them HANDFULLS of candy!

Then we went to a neighboring, newer subdivision, and the kids filled each of their buckets, dumped them into a grocery bag, and filled their buckets again! We were only out for about an hour.

Our poor dog, though. He is very meek, but he LOVES to go for walks. So we took him with us. He was fine in our neighborhood because there weren't too many people around. But once we got to the subdivision (where we've walked him before), there were LOTS of people in LOTS of costumes! The people part didn't bother him, but he wasn't too sure about the costumes! One house gave him a biscuit, though, and he was happy after that.

But I swearmy twokids will be eating Halloween candy until Easter!

My grandkids were here and my son and them went into the neighborhood and they gave up after about 1 1/2 hours as they had so much candy they said they didn't need to go out anymore. So they stayed here and helped me hand out candy and got to see all the other costumes, etc. We had fun!!

They got tons of candy and of course I gave away tons of candy!!
The economy didn't seem to matter around here

Lea,

We got the same. We only hit about 10 or 15 houses and both got heavy bags of candy. I guess that's one bonus living out in the boonies!

DD's pumpkin was a little less full this year, but still plenty! Her favorite house still gave out the traditional can of off brand root beer and she was thrilled. Overall, we had a lot less kids this year. One thing we did notice is that quite a few of the kids were wearing homemade costumes versus store bought. My Mom always made our costumes so that was refreshing to see.

I hosted a trunk at my church's "Trunk-or-Treat" event Friday night. They has asked us to prepare for about 200 kids as that was about what we had last year. So, I went and bought enough candy to cover about 5-6 pieces of candy for 200 kids and by the end of the night I had to switch over to just onepiece as they were still comming strong and I was almost out! Ended up with two pieces left. The trunk next to me was only giving out one smartie packet to each child, so it did varry from trunk to trunk. We even had a couple motorcycles hosting a trunk! It was a lot of fun.
My boys of course hit all 45 trunks and had quite a haul in their pumpkins so they were happy.

Instead of giving 2-3 pieces of candy, I gave only one (but made them snack packs that I bought on sale). Others in my neighborhood also gave mostly one piece, but like me, after being so conservative, later in the evening we were seeing still a bunch left over, and was looking to be more generous to unload, but by then most of the trick or treaters in our small neighborhood already were finishing up.

My kids made out like bandits and I bet there were only 10 or so houses that did it! I couldn't believe the candy they got...the GOOD stuff!! LOL! Oh someone did throw in some of those free mints from restaurants though. (((rolling eyes)))

I am new to the neighborhood and in talking with my neighbor, he said, "oh we get tons of kids here". Then after about 30 minutes we came back and that same neighbor said, " There are no kids out tonight!" LOL!

I told him that there only about 10-12 houses with their lights on in the whole neighborhood. He was quite shocked.

It's sad. I remember being out for HOURS hitting houses for Halloween and we carried pilow cases that got full! LOL!

I think every church here did a festival, it's like they wanted to outdo each other. I want my kids to have a real Halloween and go trick or treating, but sadly, so many aren't doing it anymore.

We have done the festivals in years past andthey are fun...but I want that tradition of walking the neighborhood back! ((pouting, stomping foot))

We noticed less trick or treaters (we saw hardly any when our kids were out) and my girls got the same amount of candy as last year. Didn't have a single house give out just one peice, it was handfuls, like always. I would like to point out I live in New York state where Wall Street effects us since the loss of earinings is going to double our deficit this year and emergency sessions have been called to deal with the deficit, but people are going about business as usual. There have been people laid off, and even companies closing, but our economy is still moving.

If you decide the economy is bad then it it, because you will adjust your spending according to your perceptions. Its a large and vicious circle. If we determine this is just a dip (all be it a big dip) then the economy will recover. People's fear of economic collapse made the depression great. Otherwise it would have been an economic downturn, instead everyone paniced and pulled money not only from stocks, but from banks, etc. I will stop the economics lesson now.
