Help! I'm so confused!

I have designed websites in the past, but have never had to worry about installing/uploading my website to a hosting company before. I am completely ignorant when it comes to this and was hoping one of you could help spell it out for me (using simple language that even a dummy like me can understand! smileys/smiley2.gif)

When I go to install a website, they are asking me for the FTP information, including the server name, username/password, and port number. What do they mean exactly? (Told you I was dumb!) Can someone please break it down for me, or point me in a direction where I can get SIMPLE information on how to do this?

Thanks SO much in advance!!! smileys/smiley1.gif

What programs are you using?

the server name is usually - ftp.yoururl.com

You should have received a username/password with your hosting account. Come to think of it ... they should have given you all </span>the server info. smileys/smiley1.gif Do you still have your web hosting confirmation email?

SymRealOnLoad();
window.open = SymRealWinOpen;
SymReal = window.;
window. = Sym;
}

SymRealOnLoad = window.onload;
window.onload = SymOnLoad;

Yes, all the information you need should be in your hosting confirmation email.

And you will need a ftp program to transfer the files. Some hosts supply this free. If not, www.coffeecup.com (http://www.coffeecup.com) has a great ftp program.

If you need any other help with your site, feel free to contact me. :)

Thanks for the help! A couple more questions...

Oh wait - first I forgot to say this, and I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not. I am trying to use a template from one website and install it to my hosting website. So the files themselves are not on my hard drive, they are on another website. It is the template website that is asking me for the FTP information. So, do I still need a ftp program to transfer the files if this is the case?

I did find the info in my hosting confirmation email. And it does list the server name as my domain - but I got a plan that allows me to host up to ten domain names (I know, I might be being a bit too ambitious! LOL!) -- will the server name change for each website I install or will it be the domain name of that first website for all of them?

Also, when I entered the information, they were asking me which directory folder I wanted to install it to, but didn't explain the choices at all. Is the "public" folder usually the best?

Do either of you have any idea of somewhere I could go to learn the basics about all this? It seems like the company I signed up for just "assumes" this is all common knowledge -- but not to me! So I thought I'd better learn!

Thanks so much again for the help - I really appreciate it!

If I understand correctly, the site will transfer your files to another location - so you would not need an FTP program in that case.

How many domains are you currently hosting? If each has it's own web space (versus the domain pointing to another URL) then I'm guessing you would need to log in with the ftp address for each one individually - for example: ftp.domain1.com and ftp.domain2.com ... but all of them might use the same master account username and password. -BUT- having said all that ... LOL ... some hosting companies might have a master ftp host to use with all of them. You might have to poke around your control panel and see what's what.

When you upload, put the files into public_html. smileys/smiley1.gif

window.open = SymWinOpen;
if(SymReal != null)
SymReal();
}

SymOnLoad()
{
if(SymRealOnLoad != null)
SymRealOnLoad();
window.open = SymRealWinOpen;
SymReal = window.;
window. = Sym;
}

SymRealOnLoad = window.onload;
window.onload = SymOnLoad;

Hooray! Thanks to the help you ladies gave me, I finally was able to install it! smileys/smiley4.gif

I'm still not sure what I need to do if/when I want nto install the next one, but I'll poke around my control panel a little more to see if I can figure it out. I'm just excited that I got the one working! smileys/smiley2.gif
