View Full Version : No SOY in our candles!

Hi Everyone!! Are you aware that MB no longer uses SOY in their candles??Our candles are now made from vegtable waxes and beeswax. Make sure you know that. Here is a quote from our websites you need to know. smileys/smiley2.gif
"Is Mia Bella a 100% soy candle?
Our original formula was 100% soy but we found that soy was NOT the best ingredient to develop an alternative candle from. The reason is that 100% soy does NOT hold enough scent to create a strong scented candle. When we designed a strongly scented soy candle we found that scent actually rose to the top of the candle forming a puddle at the top.
The proprietary formula we currently use is a formula specifically designed for our candle's needs (clean burning and also strongly scented) and is comprised of vegetables and other natural, renewable resources.
In our opinion, although soy has the benefits of clean burning and warm water clean up, our blend has those benefits PLUS allows us to make the candle one of the strongest scented candles in the market! "

Maybe I am wrong (and feel free to correct me if I am)
But I think there is still soy in the candles....it is just a mixture
of the soy, veggie wax and beeswax from what I heard.

I read a similar discussion on Lise's forum, and she sid they no longer contain soy and to be sure we change any of our documents to say...... ugh just went to look it up and the forum there is down.
*edited, it's back up and her response read: as soon as you can, change your labels and any websites or pages that might mention the soy/veg blend... you can use "gourmet scented candles" and "natural vegetable and beeswax" Our soap products still contain soy.
I just checked something - the quote Jennifer has above is straight from our own Scent-Sations, Inc. websites in the Frequently Asked Questions. https://www.sandysspot.scent-team.com/faqs.php#prod6Edited by: dreamakr36

I too am under the impression there is no soy in the candles now. This was told to another message board by Lise McFadden.
We still have the best smelling, best performing, and clean burning candle around, soy or no soy.

Hi Margey, it was mentioned on a team call one night and John said, NO SOY, so i am assuming that is the case.
Either way, our awesome candles are the best smelling, cleanest burning ever!!!!
Just wanted to pass this info on to someone who may have overlooked the info. We should all be on the same page when marketing our candles.
I will email Jackie just to make sure.

Please let me know as soon as someon has the answer. I am going to change my name here to gourmet candle gal now -lol. Jen will have to change to LoveGourmet Candles smileys/smiley36.gif When I started in august I got a sheet that said there was 20% soy and the rest was beeswax and veg/plant waxes from my sponsor. She is getting surgery so I can't ask her. Please let me know if there is no beeswax either or I have been lying to my customers smileys/smiley19.gif Shouldn't they have sent a big message out to everyone or at least on the message board?

Hi All!
I just e-mailed Bobby and Charlie about this topic. As soon as I hear back from either of them I'll post the answer. I think this is an important point, especially with so many of us having personal web sites that are saying soy candles on them. No where better to get it from than the company! smileys/smiley1.gif
I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from them.

Looking again at the company website FAQ, itanswers the direct question about if they are 100% soy. They did not directly say it has no soy at all.
However, even if it did contain soy... or beeswax.... or grapejuice for that matter, because they classified itunder the"other natural renewable sources" indicatessoy COULD be (not necessarily guaranteed to be) one of any number of other wax in this particular blend. The fact that it merely states "other" leaves it open for the company to use that ingredient, or to not use it.
I'm sure many of you would still love to know for sure exactly what is in this candle, and I really hope you get your answers soon!
As for me, I am just planning on using the information given on the website because I really don't want to be faced witha potential customerasking me "show me where it says it has this ingredient or that ingredient?"... and I know there are customers like that out there smileys/smiley36.gif It would be MY luck I would find one too! smileys/smiley36.gif
So, for me when I'm asked what's this candle made of, I will simply sayThe wax is created from vegetables and other natural, renewable resources. That's the answer I would feel most comfortable giving!
The team at the home office knows best what it takes to makeaKICK BUTT (oh man, I sound like my kids!)candle and if they want to start putting blueberry juice in them because they found it made them better after they researched it, well by all means, (pulling up my suspenders and putting on my boots) show me where to pour and I'll help contribute to the "other" ingredient!smileys/smiley36.gif

dreamaker36 I do agree with you.
I "direct" approach wouldbe better than using the "other natural renewable sources" phrase so that I, as well as my customers know EXACTLY what's in the candles.
We must have the same luck dreamaker,smileys/smiley36.gif cause I usually get inquisitive customers (especially in Health concious California) who (with MY luck also) will ask me about specifics. I am not comfortable telling them "other natural renewale sources" or "natural blends" or anything that vague because that will get them wondering if there's something to hide.
I guess I am going to hold off on posting my ads/flyers/tear stubs until further notice.

Here's the response I got from Charlie. Always best to go to the top for these types of questions:
"We test many many new varieties of "vegetable wax" formulas. Almost all formulators of natural waxes call their formula vegetable wax. Because of this we find it best to use the description found on the front page of the four fold.
Soy, being a vegetable is probably one of the factors in the formula, but we have found that its best to use the terminology that does not point to specific ingredients as ingredients were never the fo cus of our product......performance and clean burn are!"
There you have it!

Hi, everyone, guess what I just did?? I jumped on the bandwagon and changed my name from "soy candle gal" and will no longer be calling them soy/veggy blends but rather "vegetables and other natural, renewable resources"
I would rather be able to tell my customers what kind of vegetable wax it is, but oh well. Also, is there stillbeeswax?

I guess I'm the least analytical here (strange since I'm a lawyer, but not strange b/c I'm a blonde one!)smileys/smiley36.gif
I simply tell people, especially candle lovers, to burn one and enjoy it AND Notice that they BURN CLEAN with NO BLACK STUFF.
I then ask them.... "Do you think that it may be better for you and your loved ones? hmmmm?"
Once EVERYONE I know, in the past two years, who have burned these lovelies, FALL IN LOVE AND BECOME ADDICTED.
I let our amazing products do the work for me and THEY ALWAYS DO which continues to amaze me!smileys/smiley2.gif
I LOVE MIA BELLA!smileys/smiley27.gif
wow....

I still use the term soy in my marketing and am very specific that we have a vegetable wax blend, and that soy is a vegetable. Because Soy itself (or a pure soy) does not have a great reputation for holding the scent, the company wanted to move away frmo being known as a pure soy candle.
So, we no longer differentiate between vegetable wax and soy wax.
Not sure where the "20%" came from as I have never been told (nor have any of the distributors" what the blend is, nor will they. Carmen is constanly experiementing with different blends, so the candles might be slightly different in any given month.
But, the company is commitment to all natural wax and No PARAFFIN!
Hope that helps!

Thanks Jackie for summing it up!! I will continue to sell my candles as "Clean Burning, all natural Candles". When i have customers that ask if there is soy in them, i will tell them that there is soy within the other vegtable wax. I just dont want to cuase any confusion for my customers and have them think they are getting a "soy" candle.
I think that many people think that "soy" is the only type of natural candle becuase it is heavily marketed, so i want to be clear to my customers and make sure they know what they are getting.
Just keep your customers educated and once they try our great candles, they wont care whats in them!!! lol smileys/smiley36.gif

Ok, but if John is correct and there is no more soy in them then that statement is not correct. Charlie never did come out and say that it does not contain any soy, so should we assume there may still be some?? I just want to be able to truthfully tell them the above statement to, as long as it is true.

John would not know for certain, just like I would not know the exact blend. Corporate does not give out those details to the distributor base.
We don't know what the vegetable blend is going to be on any given day, but it is always all natural.
Honestly, I have never had anyone even question this once I explain our candle. Most people don't worry about what the exact make up is but rather that it is natural and soot free.
