I got this error today when opening up Word. Can anyone help?

Microsoft Word encountered file corruption while opening c:\Documents and Settings\. . .\Normal.dot Part of this document might be recoverable. Attempt recovery now?

Hi there. Do you have the Microsoft Word installation disk that came with your program? I haven't had much luck with recovery when my computer has done this. I would re-install the program if at all possible. Good luck! Sherri

Thanks. If I say yes to the "attempt recovery now", could anything bad happen?

Yes, I know the basics but I do not understand this.

Were you trying to open up the Word program or a file you saved in the program. If it's a file that's corrupted re-installing the program might not help. Attempting recovery, if it doesn't work you loose the file which you've obviously already lost. If it does work everything should be OK.

If you can't open up Word at all, then reinstall the Word program. If you don't have the disk to reinstall Word, try doing a System Restore.

I use Word daily. Every time I've gotten that message, I was scr#$%d. I now back up on two hard drives everything I do. I lost hours of transcription work one time, and had to do it all over again. smileys/smiley18.gif

Thanks everyone. McAfee said there was 1 or more items that could not be fixed. In their reports it says that "SystemGuards have allowed a one-time change to your computer".

Go to the location that the normal.dot file is located at and delete it. Microsoft word will make a new normal.dot file when you relaunch. Common word problem.
