OK, my expert WAHM's...

If I am signing a IC contract with a company, why would they want or need my SS# and Photo Id for? I have a job offer, they have sent a basic, but seemingly, legitimate contract for me to sign as an IC and I'm just wondering if this is standard practice.

Everything so far has felt legit....maybe I am being too overcautious....there's still 10% of me that is wondering if this is all what it seems to be. If I am responsible for my taxes, why do they need the SS#?

Any advice...quickly...would be so appreciated...I'm supposed to start tomorrow morning (the owner will be calling to get me acclimated to the duties) and they are expecting me to fax my SS# & photo. I gotta make sure I make the right decision and need some true expert advice. TIA

Yes they will ask you for these things. I believe the reason for needing the SS# is they still have to report that they paid you.

You can apply for an EIN (Employee Identification Number) through Social Security and use that instead of your SSN. I did that when I was going to be working as an IC. I applied for it online and if I remember correctly I got the number either that day or within 1-2 days, I got a letter with the number a week or so later.

When I was filling out the application I had a couple of questions, I posted them and got some help from the wonderful people here.

Yes, that is common and it is legitimate. It's actually for your protection as well. You might look up info on the IRS website and others as well as to what constitutes an IC in the eyes of the law. Very important!!
