I see there are other complaints about CraigsList on here, so here goes my CraigsList horror story.
Late last night there was a post on Craigslist for a scanner/prep position, that paid pretty decently. It stated they wanted to interview persons today. They wanted you to just stop in today between 9am & 4:30 EST. They were looking for FT/PT persons, and said the hours were flexible, and that it was a perfect situation for college students, or stay at home moms. It said that they wouldn't accept phone inquiries, but to just stop in and ask for Ed. It gave very detailed directions to the company. The ad stated they needed to fill 50 positions right away. It gave the company name, and I looked it up to see if it was a legit company in North Carolina, and it was. So, I put all doubts aside and said I would check into it.

It seemed perfectly fine, to me as I have responded to other ads, that stated they would interview on the spot, and for applicants to just stop by, and they wouldn't accept phone calls on the position. I have gotten jobs that way also, where if you had the qualifications they were looking for and you interviewed well with them, they hired you on the spot. So, although I had some alarms go off about a couple of things in the ad, I still thought I would check it out.

So, I got up this morning, and got dressed with the intention of being one of the first applicants there. I am new to the area, so I did a mapquest inquiry of how to get there from where I am as the ad only gave instructions on how to get there from one city in NC. That was one alarm, but I figured maybe the person only knew one way. Another alarm was they didn't list the street address, but I was able to get sufficient directions.

I found the place with a fair amount of ease. I pull up to the 1st building that has the co. name on it, and I notice there is only one car there. So, although I am skeptical at this point, I say a little prayer and proceed to go to the office. As I'm getting out of my vehicle, a young man driving a company van pulls up, so I ask him where I can find Ed, the person I am to see about the job. He says that Ed is in another building up the hill and points me toward the building, and I thank him and proceed up the hill. At this point, my fears subside, because I figure OK, well at least this is a real company, and Ed is a real person. So, now I start feeling pretty confident.

When I get to the next building, I see a few more cars, but still wondering why the place isn't swarming with applicants, since it really is a great position, with pretty decent pay. But I shrug this off, and get out of the car & head toward the building. At this time, the young man in the van drives up the hill, and I'm a little uncertain still which door to go in, so I ask him which door to go into. He leads me inside, and it looks like a place that stores records and documents, much like a company I worked for when I lived in Seattle. So, again I calm down and say all is well. Then the young man walks into a back office and calls for Ed. Ed doesn't come immediately, so I say "Oh Ed isn't in?" And the young man says, "Yeah, he's here, he'll be out in a minute." So, in a few seconds the mysterious Ed does come out to talk to me.

Well, I was soooooooooo not prepared for what Ed was going to tell me. I shook his hand and said, "Hi, Ed I'm here about the position I saw posted on CraigsList late last night." And Ed says, "There is no position. That was a bogus post by a disgruntled employee." (at this point I'm thinking he is joking, but then....) he apologizes for me coming all the way there for nothing, but praises the fact that I was good at following directions, and finding the place. He said that they were actually downsizing, because the work had slowed down. He said, as soon as he learned of what this person had done, that he contacted CraigsList to have the post removed.

Unfortunately, for me & a few other folks, the ad wasnot removed in time for us to be spared the humiliation of getting up, getting ready, driving at least 1/2 hour from home, wasting gas,& on top of it all I am sick with the flu. I was just really in shock, so much that I ran a red light on my way back home. I am sooooooooooooo disappointed, as I really was hoping to get this job.

I really feel CraigsList should do a better job of policing the people that post ads. I feel it is terrible, when there are honest people out there, looking for honest work and we get duped like this. They should at least insist that the poster supply a contact number, so this wayyou can at least call before hand to make sure the job is on the up and up, and don't waste your time or gas. I am more disappointed than mad, and really just in shock, that someone would go so far as to do something like that. I mean I understand the person was probably upset to be out of work ( I know the feeling), but ifthey wanted to get back at Ed for firing them, (not that I agree that it is right to do anything), but if a person wants revenge, they should take it out on that person, and not involve other people.

I am definitely skeptical now about applying to anymore Craigslist ads.
I hope this never happens to anyone else on here.

Good day.

I am so sorry that was your unfortunate experience...I have never been comfortable with applying for jobs on Craigslist....I don't know if many reputable companies would use craigslist to find employees....However, some people have found success on there....I think I will just stick to using monster.com and careerbuilder.com (Although they have more than their fair share of bogus ads as well...).... AWWW http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gifWhat a terrible situation for you to have gone through. I agree about CL, you just never know. I applied for the famous "order taking" job that I saw posted here (that has like 5 pages of reading). I interviewed, she said I was pretty much hired, she'd send my name over to HR and I'd get a call to complete my paperwork. I even received 2 other emails from her saying that they were swamped with applicants and it would take about 10 days for them to get back with me. It was a really good fit for me because of the hours. Well, it was all just a scam and i have never heard back. Back to the hunting I go.... How stupid that a disgruntled employee would go to that extreme. I have been pretty upset before leaving a job, but I would NEVER do something like that.

I hope something works out for you... and I hope you feel better.http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif

Thank you ladies for your support. This is such a great board 2 come & vent when you have issues like this happen, because people understand how you feel.

And Momto2 I'm sorry your situation didn't work out either. But if at first we don't succeed, just keeppppppppppp onnnnnnnnn tryin'.

I am drinking a nice cup of tea & getting ready to lie down for a bit. I know I would never go to so much trouble either to get back at an employee for letting me go. I'm thinking actually that they may be able to take some legal action against this person. I wouldn't want to hurt other folks in that way, by making them waste their time responding to a bogus job offer. But, it's over now, the one good thing that did come out of it is that I learned how to get around a little bit better. I found a couple of stores I had been looking for, and was glad to know they are closer to me than I thought.

So, like you back to the drawing board of finding something else. I wish my at home jobs, kept me busy enough to not have to look for outside work, but that's just not the case right now. Someday though I know it will be different.

OK, I'm gonna grab a nap, and try my hand at this ticketpuller session at 1:00 pm today. I just hope noone else in the NC area went all the way out there for nothing.

I fell for it too today. I was the first one there at 9am. I live near Cole Park. Ed actually looked at my resume and said he was looking to hire someone, but was only $9 a hr. He looked at my resume and handed it back too me, like I was over qualified.

I was disappointed because it would have been perfect, right near my house. I also had researched the company and thought ok, it must be legit.

Don't feel bad, you weren't the only one. I hope you feel better soon!

No way for CRAIGSLIST to police. Most cities are FREE ads only major cities are paid advertising. I am sorry you went through all the DRAMA, but better driving over than working for months and then no PAY.

Hey Kira,

Oh I'm sorry that you went out there also. Yes, Ed asked to see my resume also, and was going to keep it, but asked if the $9 was ok, and I said that I actually needed the $13 that was quoted. I live in Durham, so gas wise $9.00 is not enough for me to travel more than 5 miles from my home. And then I wondered if there were going ot be health benefits offered, because that would have affected my decision to work full or part time. But since there is no actual job to be had, I guess that doesn't matter.

Well, at least something happened today to make me feel a little better, I won thebonus of $5.00 in the ticketpuller session, so that made my day.

All right Kira, well here's hoping we find something really 'legit', so we can get to work.

Oh yay!!! Congrats on the session bonus. I wasn't able to make the pull this afternoon. That at least covered the gas you spent this morning.....

BTW I am in the Charlotte area. Nice to see those from the Carolina area!

Take care! Have a great day.

Hey Momto2,

Thanx for the congrats. There may be another pull at 3:00 pm today, you can check the site, or I guess they will send emails. I may try to get in that one also. Needless to say, I didn't even get a nap, because I didn't want to miss the session. I knew I probably wasn't going to get up in 45 mins. So, sometimes missed sleep is a good thing. Maybe I'll see you at the next pull.

My uncle lives in Charlotte. I see there are a few NCers in the house.

This really disturbs me and I am not sure if any of you have heard the horrible story, and it is a true story, look online. It was about a 24yr old nanny that saw an ad on craigslist for a couple of newborn needing a nanny (well it wasn't a couple, it was 19yr old who plotted a sick plan of luring a young woman to her death) http://www.nationalledger.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi?archive=18&num=16958 (http://www.nationalledger.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi?archive=18&num=16958)

Hi all,

Yes the Nanny Craigslist ad incident certainly was sad, and unfortunately there are a lot of unstable people out there. I usually won't respond to things such as that, individuals looking for help, because you just don't know who you will be dealing with, and it's too bad because I'm sure there are a lot of decent people out there, who run home businesses and are looking for good people, so these types of situations hurt them also.

I have had positive experiences with Craigslist, and this really was my first negative incident. There are several temp agencies in my area that use CraigsList. I usually will only respond if I know it's a legit company, which is why the situation that happened today was disappointing, because now I have to wonder if, when I see ads for legit companies, if it isn't a disgruntled employee posting a bogus position, just to get back at someone for firing them.

Again, after this the lesson learned for me is:if there is no contact number, so I can call & speak to someone directly to confirm the position is legit, then I will just steer clear of it and not waste my time.

Momto2 I went & took my nap, (which ended up being a much needed long sleep), so I missed the 3pm as well. I signed in about 4pm to see the note also about the short notice. It looks as if there is another in the morning at 11 am, so I'll probably try to drop in on that one.

All right, well maybe I'll see some of you at the session in the morning.

I will never look for a job on Craigslist anymore. I like to stick by the saying, "a company won't look for you, you need to look for the company." This means that the best companies to work for generally have their job openings posted on their website and don't take the time to post them on Monster, Yahoo Hot Jobs, Craigslist, and so many other job websites.

If a person wants to work for a hospital, insurance company, construction company, or whatever type of company you want to work for, call the company to see what jobs they have open and visit the website.

I am very glad you are safe! One more thing I wanted to add is that the sicko in my post disguised his voice as a woman when he spoke to the nanny on the phone. Prior to her leaving for the "interview", she told her roommate that the "woman seemed kind of strange."

I too am very skeptical and cautious of Craigslist. However, my 2 current part-time jobs I found through Craigslist ads (and both are wonderfully legit!). My policy is that I only apply for ads that list a legit website, plus a verifiable phone number and/or an email address that can be verified via the website and contains the company name as part of a dedicated email address. Inever apply to ads that only supply the Craigslist email or give no specific company info at all.

Hey all,

Yes, thanx to the Lord above I came out unscathed & alive, but he never leads me into danger. I'm thankful nothing happened to Kira either. Thank you all for your concern.

I just wonder how many more persons showed up, since the ad said between 9am & 4pm. I hope not many more. I checked Craigslist when I got home, & the post was removed. I could only imagine how Ed felt, when all these people showed up about the job. How embarrassing that must have been for him, but I guess that's what the 'disgruntled' employee wanted to do, embarrass & humiliate Ed. But, still it wasn't right for that person to do such a thing.

I think it is very unfortunate that scammers are everywhere, but I guess some of us are just naturally more skeptical than others. I have been looking through ads for rental houses since I plan on relocating.Half of the listings are bogus ads! Most of these people dont even own the houses they are advertising. They are posing as landlords and taking people's money.
