View Full Version : Images in signature files?
01-28-2008, 12:45 PM
Do you think thatimages should be allowed in the signature files? If yes, would it be better to limit the size of the image?
Or, do you think only text should be allowed?
Let me know your opinion without arguing with each other please. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Hi Jeanine,
I especially liked Your request and comment about not arguing with each other. It seems that far too often, people seem to miss the point of posting to Forums. This is not a shouting match or who is best about posting to forums. This is first and foremost an opportunity to develop an Online Relationship with another like-minded individual.
I AM only looking for people who see the Internet like I do which is a vehicle.....a tool for reaching out to others and developing successful
relationships that result in good business.
Thank You.

Probably the moderators already thought of this, but if you allow
even more images than just the avatar, you will be getting people
sending even more complaints to the moderators about "other people's"
signature-file-image.
It would end up being more work for the moderators.

I'd prefer no images, but if they must be there they should be limited. I've noticed that the larger siggys with images actually create a frame with a scroll bar. When that happens, it really infringes on my ease of scrolling through the thread. I have to be particular about where I place my cursor to avoid it. That I find truly annoying. After all, I come here to read and interact; not to be solicited.

I voted to have them but limit their size.
Some of them are a bit much and like Barb said make it hard to navigate. There has been more than once I have accidentally clicked on a site banner and had to page back to get to where I was.
Loli made a good point to about the seizures too. Some of the ones (not recently that I can remember) that have a strobing feature are really bad. They make me and my husband if he is in the room, physically ill and my son who has seizures, I won't even let him in the room if something like that is on the screen.
As far as the avatar pictures, whatever the final choice, please have the rules across the board for everyone. There has been a pick and choose type of thing in the past and it got really old really fast. Some people were allowed to have nearly free reign (and flaunted it) while others were just straight out told "no".

I like what Clyde said! We are here to develop relationships and help each other in whatever we are doing. Sig files and images are a great way to learn about what people are doing. I have seen some great businesses just by looking as some sig files/images that I might other wise have missed if they weren't allowed.

It would seem to me that anything that helped to get to know the person better would be worthwhile. It seems that what is all too often lacking in marketing attempts these days is good relationship building.
I AM all for everything and anything that can help me get to know You as a fellow Internet Marketer and what You may have to offer that would be of value to me.

I think images can be helpful in personalizing whatever it is you are advertising. The better someone knows you, the warmer they will be to reviewing any opportunity you are presenting.
We are definitely moving towards a more visual internet, and pictures are probably just the beginning. I'm hearing more and more that you have to "brand yourself" to become
successful online. Look at Mike Dillard, the Magnetic Sponsoring
guru. His videos are popping up everywhere! And even Youtube is turning into a video forum for business. It will be interesting to see where it all goes.

I'm a little mixed on it. Avatars only give you a square, and that's usually just a place for a pic of you or a symbol that represents you. Limited. The sig gives you room for a little more, but it shouldn't take away from the forum, which is for communication. So I'm for an image the size of mom2four76 (http://)'s but no more. I also agree with the iframe window that larger images create. It really messes with my page scrolling since I use a wheel mouse. Last, I think they should be static gifs or jpgs, no animations.

I think pictures and getting to know each other are great, but they're distracting in the signature bar. I think the avatar is enough for posts, but it could be a little bigger, maybe even taller & rectangular to allow for a better image.
How about adding a photo album feature to the profile section? There should be a place for additional photos, but not the signature line.

Kinda like talking about the weather. I AM very much in favor of anything that will help successful Online Relationships develop.

Hello:
I visit a few work at home and Internet home business forums regularly and I find the ones that allow images are more fun and more friendly.
An image adds personality to the post, as long as it is in good taste and respectful.
I think image size should be standard (all the same size) and should be regulated and monitored by the administrator.

I think that if an image should be allowed in the signature line then it aught to only be a banner ad that links to the web address of the board member. This way the image gets displayed, it doesn't crowd the page and it serves the purpose of passive marketing.

However, I do think it should be kept to a minimal size otherwise they do get large to load.

I agree with the majority that the Avatar area is better served to add some flair, reflecting one's personality. The signature box is a very useful and functional feature for letting people know where you are coming from or what you have to offer to the forum community.

I went with allow them, but limit their size. You don't want to have signatures that are bigger than the actual post being made, but you don't want to disallow them, that's no fun. smileys/smiley1.gif

I agree to putting images in signature files because it is an added attraction but there should be a limit to its size.

I have no objection to images or pictures in sig files as long as they are not the 'flashing' type. They really annoy me and detract from what I am trying to look at.

I like the idea - as you can see below :) I personally never click on a text link unless someone mentions to click on it. I do, however, get curious about banner ads and will click on them.

I love Images in signature files. I'm a regular visitor of the WAHM forums and have learned a lot here. And even started making money online from some of the things that I learned here. I decided to become a member after reading this poll. I am a member of many message boards that involve internet marketing and that is where I learned how to create images in signatures. It is absolutely one of my favorite features of message boards.

I used to use text especially when banners were going a bit out of fashion a few years ago, people just got a bit tired of the distraction of the flashing images. I thought I'd give it another go today though, as I've noticed a lot of people have stopped using them. Mind you I don't really blame them the forum code takes a bit of working out, I was at it myself for a good half an hour. I'm ok with html but I must admit I scratched my head a couple of times trying to work out were the end image tag went. [/IMG]

I'm new here, but I voted anyways. I love siggy pics, it helps to show other's personalities and I like looking at them, I think they should definitely be size limited. If whoever is running this needs an idea of what the size limits should be, I could give my opinion, just pm me. :) I will probably never find this thread again, this is a big board!

I really don't mind either way. I always like to see the different banner designs people have. It also kinda lets people know what type of products or services others offer with graphics.
But definitely think size should be a factor.
Just my little two cents this morning.

I'm new, but I agree. I think that sometimes the images can be over the top and it's hard to keep track of all of the text and the conversation. I don't mind some pics, but I voted that maybe the size should be limited.

I say not only limit their size, but in some cases it should be an either or choice. Either you have an image as your signature line, or you have text.
I have yet to see a forum that uses images in their signature line, so I don't know how this would work. I think that it may slow down the loading time of each page if people have many or complicated pictures in their sig line. I'm not totally against the idea, just not sure how it would work.

Hi every one just joined today and new
to forums but not the net.
Pictures are just great and allows one
to see who is writing what
but please, please, never allow videos
they drive me mad and almost
without exception I turn them off. As
soon as I see a video I'm gone.
I know most people will say I am
missing out but I just hate them.
Do other people like them?.

A very pleasant day to all. For me Image is okay as long as it's not vulgar and do not provoke obscenity. Image will speak for the totality of the owner.

I think thatimages in the signature files may cause a bit of clutter or take the eye away from themessage(s)/links in the signature files. having signature line and not photo does make it easy to see quickly what people are doing If you want to see their website, or pics, you can click on their link!
I voted "allow but limit size," but on second thought, I like the uniformity of the signature line here where you can easily see someones business.

I think images should be allowed, but agree to limiting the size. We here have avatars for images, and I love seeing my husband & I's pic up there. Images realtive to what we do, like for us, a "green" leaf or something health related, or a small candle for candle business, etc, are great. But I don't like things too gawdy (?sp).

Hi Cr,
I am not sure if you are talking about changing your avatar, but wherever it is that you host your photos, copy the link and then paste it in the box in the avatar section in your profile. There should be an image link tagged to the photo that you want to use. I do not know what the rules are about the size of the avatars here, but you should check that too.
Hope that this is helpful. And nice to meet you.

Hey! Totally new here, but it seems that a text signature is all that is necessary. I kinda get irked when I see really glittery signatures, but really love clicking on links if I feel the person who has a link to their site is providing great content in their posts. Just a thought to add to the mix. :)

Hi
I personally would prefer text links only in the signature bar but as the vast majority have voted for them but with limit to the size, then so be it.
I would suggest nothing bigger than 125 x 125 max and preferably static rather than dynamic as the flashing images are so distracting when one is trying to read the posts.
Thanks for asking.

I don't really care if there are images or not but size is important I think. Definitely limit the size and enforce compliance.
For sake of storage, I think the size of images should be limited....but not the creativity. I must admit that my images have gotten a lot more interesting after seeing how others create theirs. :)
