View Full Version : Question about candle pouring...

For those of you who make candles I have a question about pouring and additive procedures. I have made candles before so I know a little about what I'm talking about but don't have much experience with different techniques. I'm talking about soy wax, by the way.

1. Is it possible to melt wax with no color or additives, then pour it plain into containers and do the coloring and fragrancing in the individual containers? (I'm thinking about not using wicks)

2. Do most of you use the pouring pots or do you use some kind of wax melting machine or something else?

I'm not asking for trade secrets, I just want a little more knowledge about logistics and if my ideas work!

Thanks tons!!!

I melt my wax in a presto pot, then I put it into the pour pot and do
my magic in there, then when it's at the pour stage, I put it into the
containers.

I have only done soy, and I hear it is different than the other kind of wax.

No, you would probably not be able to add the dye and scent in individual containers after you've poured them. You might be able to since you are not using wicks, but something tells me it probably woudln't come out that well. Reason being, you add the scent and color at it's melting point, then let it cool a bit before you pour it into containers at room temp. I mean I don't see much of a problem, but it might cause some. You can definately try it out and see how it works though. :)

Also, our process is similar to the one above. ;)

I melt my wax in a pouring pot. If I am making one candle with one fragrance and color and another candle in a different fragrance and color, I do this:

I melt wax in the pour pot and then pour the melted wax into a pyrex measuring cup to the desired ounce mark (accounting for room for the fragrance). (I have to warm up the pyrex by running it under hot water - otherwise the wax cools in it too quickly and frosts).

Then I add the desired amount of color and fragrance and pour it into my jar.

This allows me to do one candle at a time if I have individual orders, or if I am just playing around with new fragrances - rather than making a whole pour pot of the same color/fragrance.
