Gail Thomas is with Mary Kay, and she expects to make
$500,000 next year. Has anybody ever heard of her?

What is the basic difference between Arbonne and Mary
Kay?

Hi! Mary Kay only carries skin care, cosmetics, and body care products where Arbonne carries these items, plus some vitamins, weight loss items and some other things as well. Mary Kay has been the best selling brand of skin care and color cosmetics for 12 years now as well.

I am friends with an Arbonne consultant and we have compared compensation plans for sales and team building where Mary Kay's commission plan is higher, but Arbonne has more of a variety of products.

I am sure that the Arbonne ladies can give you some more info on their products! I do love the Daily Detox Tea from Arbonne! It is yummy!!:) I do know that both companies have great products!! Edited by: 2bpink

I am curious about your take on the compensation plan comparison. I have heard over and over that Abonne's is the most generous in the business, and my upline was with Mary Kay for 9 years and never made much money, and with Arbonne, using the same techniques and having the same personality, she has made it to RVP and the MErcedes in 16 months. And is making a strong 6 figure income now.

People ask me how the structure compares, and I don't know how the structure of other companies work, so I can't compare. Of course, I barely understand the ARbonne structure, but that is neither here nor there.

If you feel comfortable giving it in a nutshell how it works with MK, I would appreciate it. I don't want to be giving out false information.

I just read a site today that had a chart of the top selling skin care
companies and Mary Kay was not at the top of the list. Just thought

Isn't it Estee Lauder?? Also Arbonne is only marketed in two countries, USA & Canada.

I don't know any specifics re: MK's comp plan, only that they require minimums to purchase.

Hi, I am a former MK consultant. I have compared the two compensation plans extensively and Arbonne is definitely the more profitable. And just an FYI, this was the first year in the past eleven that MK did not make it on the best brand cosmetic list.

Sure, I do not mind giving you a breakdown of the compensation plan:

Sales/Reorders - We earn a 50% commission

Team Building/Sharing:

If you have 1 to 4 active recruits, you earn a 4% bonus on their wholesale orders.

If you have 5 or more active recruits, you ean a 9 or 13% commission check. At this level, the 13% check is based on how much your own personal wholesale order is for the month.

Also, for every new qualified recruit from the 5th consultant on, at the consultant level, you earn a $50 team building bonus.

A consultant can earn a car at consultant status - currently the car is the Pontiac Vibe OR the cash option is $375/month.

As a Sales Director: Sales directors earn between 9% to 13% on their personal recruits, plus they earn an addition 9% to 13% on the entire unit's wholesale (and this includes the directors own order as well.)

Unit Volume Bonuses: A Sales Director is entitled to a Sales Director Unit Development Bonus of $500 for each month five or more "qualified" new unit members are added to her Sales Unit.
A Sales Director is entitled to a Sales Director Unit Volume Bonus of ten percent (10%) of the monthly Wholesale Purchase Volume of Sales Director’s Sales Unit, calculated based on the starting point of the applicable $1,000 tier, beginning at the $5,000 tier. For example:

Hi! Thanks for letting me know that - I have a call into my director to find out how they determine this. I know that every year, Mary Kay tells us that again we are #1 based on retail sales for products. They did give us the source of confirming information for this, but I do not remember what it is! I will find out for sure, though!!

darla605

In order to maintain your 50% discount, you have to place $400 retail order every three months.

2bpink
11-15-2005, 04:51 PM
Hi Darla, Yes, that is correct. You do have to place a $200 wholesale order/$400 retail order every third month to get your 50% discount. However, a consultant can technically order their $200 wholesale once a year and still remain a consultant. I have a couple on my team that do this.

Edited to say: What I think is great about Arbonne is that there are not as many consultants and that fact appealed to me. I think both companies are great!! :)

I've also heard that MK encourages reps to stock inventory, where Arbonne discourages this. I knew a director who had loads & loads of inventory - whole bookcases full! I only have a few items on hand that my regular customers run out of frequently (clear advantage)

2bpink
11-15-2005, 05:01 PM
Hi Bev, Inventory is optional with Mary Kay, but not required. What can get out of hand with this is some consultants will try to "buy" their quarterly prizes, etc. and that is not good. When I was a director, I had a girl in my unit that I would have to tell every month, "If you did not sell that much, you should not be ordering that much!"

In the over 4 years that I have been in the company, I have picked up several customers due to the fact that they could not get their products right away from their consultant and they didn't want to wait for them. There are advantages to having product on hand, but if you are not good at managing your money, it can also be a disadvantage as well.

Like I mentioned earlier, I think Arbonne is a great company as well and I will never bad mouth them, or you ladies! Have a great evening!! :)

chrlstoncharmed

They must determine the "top rated company" according to different
criteria. I have a subscription to a research site that reports on top
beauty companies according to sales and Mary Kay is in the top 20 for
the years 2001-2004, but it isn't (never was) the top company.

I brought this up because we've had posts here lately about making
claims that aren't factual, whether we realize it or not, know what I
mean? It seems to be an ongoing problem in this industry.smileys/smiley6.gif <!--

I think both companies are great. There are faithful MK users and faithful Arbonne users. I think one of the biggest differences right now, besides the fact that we do not use mineral oil and MK does (I have read the ingredients for MK) is that MK is more saturated (MY OPINION), whiCH makes it harder to sell alot. Everyone seems (in my circles) to know someone who sells MK. In my circles, not many people have heard of Arbonne yet so they are intrigued b/c of that fact. Then most of the time, they love the product and want to buy. So yes, MKs commission is 50%. Ours is 35%. In my situation, I think I would make more sales w/ Arbonne b/c all the people I know have tried MK before or already have a consultant. It was an easier sell for me.

As far as MK inventory, I am sure not all consultants push inventory. Arbonne is not supposed to push inventory, but there are consultants pressuring new consultants into buying tons of RE9 sets, which Arbonne does NOT push. You can keep your consultant status w/ just the $29 sign up fee. You only get overridecommission if you have a $100 retail order under your i.d. every month. This is easy to do since you just put your retail orders from clients under your i.d.

I didn't really understand the pay structure for MK given above, and I am still trying to figure out our ownsmileys/smiley2.gif

As far as quality of product, well being that I am an Arbonne consultant, I of course will say ours is the best!smileys/smiley17.gifI truly believe that though for me at least. I have tried all kinds of products and Arbonne has been the best for me!Edited by: bbrown1226

smileys/smiley4.gifI do feel that because Arbonne does not have as many consultants that this really helps you ladies out a lot. You are right - there are a lot of Mary Kay consultants. We were told at a training, though, that only about 20% of all MK consultants are actually "working consultants", but still this did appeal to me about your company.

I also like the fact that Arbonne has the nutritionals and such. I have Fibro, CFS and a bladder disease, and when I met with Cassandra to try the Detox Tea and to smell the Herbal Soak, I thought this was really great! I asked her how many consultants were in my town and she said the last time she had checked it was around 23! Again, all of this really appeals to me about the Arbonne company!

Hi Bev, I drink the Detox Tea every morning and I will get my herbal soak from Cassandra when she gets back home. She is away right now. She wanted me to smell them before I purchased them to make sure that I like the scent. She is giving me instructions on how to use when she delivers.

Okay, I found the above, what what does it take to get to District Manager, Area Manager, etc?

From what I can see, Mary Kay looks like a better compensation plan?

I haven't started yet with Arbonne, but this is interesting.

There are their commission structures, in addition to what they receive as directors/recruiters above:

I just want to point out that it is important to lookmore closely at the compensation plans. In most companies your team usually needs to do a certain amount for you to get paid your comissions. For example, in MK you get paid on your team members if they are active, and I believe, that means 5 of your team members must place a specific amount of retail sales for you to get paid. 2bepink , maybe you could explain that. So it isn't as easy as it appears. Also, marykay goes by the wholesale amount, (amount after consultant discount) to pay commissions.

Hope this makes sense. I spent several hours comparing both companies before I joined Arbonne, and the potential for more income is greater with Arbonne.

It gets very confusing doesn't it?

This is how I am reading it & also from what I remember of some conversations I've had from MK consultants.

In MK, I believe, you only get override checks off of personally sponsored consultants until you are a Director. In Arbonne you get override checks off of your successline when you hit District Manager, which is the first promo level. A lot easier to make than Director.

Also, until you make Director you are only getting 4% of those personally sponsored. Same as Arbonne for our consultants but once you hit DM you get 8% of those in your Central, which includes yourself. Then it goes up from there. And remember each time you promote you keep the benefits from the level you were at before as well as adding new benefits.

Now, with MK there are various bonuses you qualify for before you hit Director, as well as after. But Arbonne also has bonuses for their consultants at each level.

Arbonne's car bonuses are more than MK.

It is true that MK gets a bigger commission on retail than Arbonne. However, the real money is in the residual checks & you have a bigger potential to earn more with Arbonne than with MK.

Different levels of Mary Kay:

Consultant:

1 - 2 active consultants - Sr. Consultant

3 - 4 active consultants - Star Recruiter

5 - 7 active consultants - Team Leader

8 or more active consultants - Future Director/Director-In-Qualificaiton (if consultant wishes to pursue directorship, then she enters what we call DIQ)

Grand Achiever - Car/cash option of $375/mo. Qualify over 4 mths./12 active team members/$18,000 in wholesale production. Consultant will need to maintain her monthly team wholesale of $4,500/wholesale. There is also a performance account where any month a consultant's team goes over the minimum wholesale amount, this is place into a performance account and the company will draw from that. Also, the first month after quailfiying for the car, the company gives the consultant a momentum month and they will double the total wholesale production for the month.

DIQ (Director-In-Qualification) - Consultant will build from 8 active to 30 active unit members over a 4 month period, while maintaining a minimum monthly production of $4,000.00.

Sales Director - 30 active unit members and on up!

Sr. Sales Director - 1 - 2 offspring sales directors

Future Exec. Senior Sales Director - 3 - 4 offspring sales directors

Executive Senior Sales Director - 5 - 7 offspring sales directors

Elite Executive Senior Sales Director - 8 and up offspring sales directors.

National Sales Director -

(12/6) 12 first-line offspring Sales Directors, six of whom are Senior Sales Directors; or

(11/7) 11 first-line offspring Sales Directors, seven of whom are Senior Sales Directors; or

(10/8) 10 first-line offspring Sales Directors, eight of whom are Senior Sales Directors

I BELIEVE I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THE TOTAL # FOR NSD HAS INCREASED FROM 18 TO 20, BUT THIS IS WHAT I FOUND ONLINE IN OUR ADVANCE BROCHURE. GIVES THE BASIC IDEA THOUGH.

Denise

Hi Denise, As long as the consultant is active, she will always receive a commission check monthly off of her team members that order. The jump from 4% to 9% is when you go from having 4 active team members to 5 or more.

To earn the 13%, there needs to be five consultants that order in one month, plus the recruiter will need to sell enough that month to place a $600.00 wholesale order. Each team member, though, does not have to place a certain amount. If the recruiter only placesa $400/wholesale order, then she will get the 9% check.

Usually a 4% check will average up to $50/month

A 9% check will avg. $100 - $300/month

A 13% check will avg. $300 and up/month

I hope I didn't miss anything. It does get confusing, doesn't it?

Jennifer - Yes, we only earn commissions on personally sponsored team members until we become directors. Edited by: 2bpink

Does Mary Kay have a "set" like Arbonne's RE9 system?

If so, how does it compare?

It is yummy!!:) I do know that both companies have great products!!

yes, 2bpink!smileys/smiley2.gif I am her Arbonne buddy!smileys/smiley1.gif Turns out we live only about half an hour from each other and we have met and will continue to get together in the future and be supportive of each other in our direct sales companies-- even thoughit seems that we should be "competitors", we are dealing with the same issues of bookings, clients, downlines, recruiting, etc. I know I have a new friend in 2bpink! Thanks to wahm.com!smileys/smiley4.gif

I just want to say how proud I am of everybody! I love the fact that both teams can compare business to business in a professional and respectful manner. It really speaks well of all of us! Like Cassandra said, in the end, we are all dealing w/ bookings, clients, dowlines and recruiting and can all share advice.

I also wanted to add about Arbonne's comp. plan. I didn't realize this at first, but the consultant override is 4%, then replaced to 8% when you get DM. But when you get to Area, you get an add'l 6% w/ the 8% making it 14%. That is where you really start seeing the $$! I know a DM, yes a Distrtict Manager, who is making 3-4 K a month b/c she has a few serious business builders and lots of wholesale accounts. This is not the typical by the way. You have to work for the rewards, but it is possible!!

Also, our wholesale buyers don't have to meet any qoutas to keep their discount. They can buy whenever they want, and you get your commission!

How cool is that Cassandra!? That's great that you two can get together like that. I don't see any reasons why consultants from all skin care companies can't get a long. There is enough people for everyone. Plus we all have different philosophies so we target different markets.

Blessed One, what do you mean by something like our RE9? Do you just mean anti-aging? Or anti-aging & repairing? Our stuff is proprietary so no one else is really going to have anything like it, but there will be anti-aging sets you can compare it to. smileys/smiley1.gif

I don't think you are supposed to. In the manual it says you can do other businesses, but not ones in competitition of our products. MK is another skincare/cosmetic choice. But I do Southern Living At Home, and that is fine - home and entertaining products. I just can't promote Arbonne at a SLAH event or SLAH at an Arbonne event. But any other company w/ similar products is probably a no-no. Plus, it would be too dificult and confusing.

Mary Kay does have an anti-aging skin care called TimeWise. The skin care included the 3-in-1 cleanser, moisturizer and foundation. They still have the basic 5-step skin care as well, but the new TimeWise formula cleanser has the Cleanser, Toner, and Mask all in the same bottle.

Yes, it is neat that we can be friends and you can learn so much from someone who is in a different company too, I feel. You get an outside look at how to get bookings, etc. and you can help each other. There are plenty of people for all of us and what we do in both businesses is about building relationships with others. Life is too short to try and compete!

Blessed One - No matter how good a compensation plan is, you will truly only succeed if you really love the products. The best way to find out is to try products from both companies and compare what you think works best for you. You do have to really believe in what you are doing and that is where the success will follow, regardless of the compensation plan! Good luck to you! :)

Great point Sandy! You have to believe in your product, not just pick a product to sell to make $$. Your belief and commitment to the product is what sells.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the Arbonne commission based on team Retail or Wholesale?

If I told $6,000 Retail in my first month, I'm an automatic Distrist Manager?

I have not heard of anyone changing from Arbonne to Mary Kay. There may be someone out there, but I don't know of anybody. But I have met ex MK consultants now doing Arbonne. Just being honest.

As far as the question about retail commission - retail volume is what promotes you from one level to the next, and what counts to maintain. Your commission is paid on the wholesale volume though. For example, yes, you will promote to DM w/ $6000 retail in 1-2 months, or $7500 retail over 3 months. But you will only get commission on the wholesale value of that amount. Make sense? So your commission is on the remainder 65% (of those you personally sponsor. Once you get DM, you get 8% commission on your personal sales too!!)
