I'm not sure what I'm feeling right now but I guess hurt is the main emotion. Years of service and they couldn't give anymore notice than that???? I never took them for a company that didn't care about their people. My husband is living for Iraq on Sunday and we are already financially struggling as he will not get a paycheck until JANUARY!

Definately did not see this one coming. You would think they could have given us at least a 2 week notice. I am sure they have known for some time what was happening. Not a good feeling to say the least with Christmas right around the corner....smileys/smiley19.gif

I just received it too. Although I have only worked for them for a few months, I was a little surprised. I'm lucky that I have another company that I work for, I feel very bad for those who don't.

WOW...I'm stunned.

Didn't expect this at all...especially since they sent out an email not even a week ago in regards to the coding status. Acting as if they were getting more work soon.Edited by: mom2one2005

Wow! I too am very surprised. It came out of the blue, it seems. I hope this doesn't affect the other coding co I work for :) Or maybe it'll affect them in a positive light, who knows. Wow!!

Any ladies with job leads, send them my way, please!

I got that email too and I was totally blown away...I would never have thought that Cypher would go out of business. I have worked for them 5 years and they have pretty much been my main source of income. I only have two other cos I work for and work is very sporadic through them.

Right now I feel like everything is just crumbling around me. The transmission in my car just went out, cost to fix that is right around $2000.00, ex husband quit his job again so there went my child support which was $800.00 a month and now this. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

If anyone knows of any other coding leads I would greatly appreciate the heads up.

I will keep you in my prayers Texaswahm. It was a blow to many of us. I know it was my main source as well. I'm just putting in my resume everywhere even if I think they might hire a wahm.

Like many posters, I worked for Cypher for many years and I am still reeling right now. I'm in shock.

Being a stay at home mom with two little kids I never had time to look for another coding company to work for in addition to Cypher - is anyone here who works for more than one willing to say what co the other one is?

Thanks either way, I understand if you don't want to share it. Good luck to all of us who were hit by this.

I too was suprise that they sent us an e-mail like that after all these years of working with them. Even after stating the coding status that they were sorry for the slow production and that soon there will be more work. I wish we knew exactly what happen because it just seems odd for them to send out an e-mail like yesturday out when they were stateing there will be some more work soon. I wish everyone good luck in finding new jobs and as a lesson as a work at home mom always have more than one job lined up just in case for times like this. I'm going to miss cypher it was a great company to work for.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

I'm waiting too. Hopefully it'll be ok, because they said they were going to MAIL it within the next 7 days. So if we don't get it by mid-week next week, I'll seriously think there's a problem. I'm giving them til then.

I can't believe they've done this. I've worked for them for over five years now. I've looked online in hopes of seeingan announcement of some sort, mentioning the close of their business, but haven't found anything. Their website is still up. Called their number, that's still in working format. Hmmm. And I'm counting on this check for rent and my car payment. At least we, here, can form some type of class-action suit if they end up not paying us. For some reason, I just can't imagine a business, ceasing operations with no notice, actually coming through with compensation. I hope I'm wrong. Edited by: WAHMinPA

Luckily, I have found more at-home opportunities doing transcription work but I won't see any of that until December. I NEED this paycheck (over $600!!) from Cypher, as I'm sure you all do. In all seriousness, if they do not pay us, I hope you'll all be up for a class-action lawsuit against them. I'm a bit bitter about the whole thing. I know it wasn't ever intended to be steady, long-term work, but after five years? I think you can pretty much determine the workflow, right! Then, one day... "hey! we're closing. thanks for your work. goodbye!!"Edited by: WAHMinPA

texaswahmof3
11-10-2007, 12:38 AM
I too worked for them for over five years and can't believe this happened. Especially with the fact that a few days before the "ceasing operations" email we received an email stating

"Cypher would like to apologize for this lull in our production schedule. We anticipate receiving more projects shortly, so keep checking your Priority List for updates. We are doing everything in our power to ensure consistent work, but slow production periods do happen. We appreciate your patience and look forward to our continued success!"

I stayed and worked for this company through the up and down times and even when they dropped their pay a couple of years ago I still stayed and worked for them. I still have two other coding jobs (which don't have a lot of work right now) but it was taking what I made with all of them to be able to pay the bills every month. My check that I'm waiting on from Cypher is well over $600 and I need that money to pay my bills. I am gonna be so p***ed http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gifif they stiff us on this money.

Now I spend most of my waking time looking for other data entry jobs and afraid to leave the computer just in case work becomes available with the other companies. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley6.gifEdited by: texaswahmof3

I've worked for them in the past too and am shocked to hear of this. I wonder if they went over to "the other side" like most coding companies and are now going to outsource the positions we held. Even though they say they are closing their doors, you never know.

I also have worked for Cypher for over 4 and a half years, through the good and bad times. Like many I am waiting for my check. Hopefully, they will send them out. It would definately be like them to wait till the very last day to send it, but they have always paid in the past. I had to get a job out of the house and I am trying very hard to find an at home position so I can continue to stay at home with my kids. Good luck to everybody. This really stinks, to put it nicely.

You did the same thing I did .... go check their site, etc. It seems strange tho that the sites (both the maincyper and the cypher coding site) are still up. Also their phone number still working ....

Makes you wonder about what LindaLucy says about going to the 'other side' (outsourcing), but then, why lie and say you're closing up shop instead of just sending a generic 'thankyou for your services .... good luck on your future endeavors' email out to everyone? (not that I'm surprised by a co lying mind you .... Cypher wouldn't be the firstIF they did)

And NO! I'm not saying they did; just seems weird both sites are up and the phone # still works (at least the one that LindaLucy called is).

I can't believe they've done this. I've worked for them for over five years now. I've looked online in hopes of seeingan announcement of some sort, mentioning the close of their business, but haven't found anything. Their website is still up. I really will miss working for them. It was one of the more less stressful jobs I've done from home. And after doing it for so, so long, it was more like second nature to me (although I never did go and try to become a QCer, just because I figured I'd become too aggravated with all the coding mistakes!). I don't know of any other coding companies like Cypher. Used to also work for one called Lighthouse, but they, too, went out of business. Edited by: WAHMinPA

WAHMinPA when did they go out of biz? I've been trying to find out. Last I heard they were still in biz earlier this yr. So I'm guessing it's sometime this year; sometime after April or May.

Also have you tried ONSS?

I have worked for this company for 5 years and just can not believe this! I did get my check yesterday, thank goodness.

I at one time had my plate really really full working for 5 or 6 coding companies coding, Qcing and unitizing. Now, here I am with no job! This just absolutely came out of nowhere. Of all the other coding companies I worked for, they all have went out of business except one and I had become inactive with them (because of being so busy with another company) and now they're not hiring. :(

I have been working for Cypher for close to five years, and i am not very surprised that they went out of business. I have been worried about this for the last couple of years, just two days before the email, my brother and I were wondering how they stay in business. I don't know how many of you are political, but if you want these type of jobs to stay in, or come back to this country, you better scrutinize your politicians and check out whether they are free trade Republicans or fair trade or protectionist Democrats. Personally I am for protectionism. How can we in the US compete with companies overseas, which is where 95 percent of the litigation coding is done now, who pay there workers 2 or 3 dollars an hour. I hear all these politicians talking about how we don't have enough engineers, mathematicians and etc. and I think what is the incentive to go into those fields, when no matter what kind of degree you get or how brilliant you are, companies can hire an Indian or Chinese just as if not more brilliant for 1 fifth the salary. Something needs to be done, before all of our manufacturing, steel producers, computer jobs and etc. are shipped overseas. If you are not involved in politics, I suggest you get involved, if you want to have a better chance of acquiring an online job. You can of course make your own choice, but is obvious which party is concerned about our jobs being shipped overseas. Now the Republicans will put there spin on it, realy think about it logically and decide what makes sense. Capitalism is not god.

Now I loathe scammers, which of course si something a scammer might say. I joined a site acouple days ago and I have not made a penny, but it seems like a logical and real way to make some money and it is totally free to join. Honestly, even though it sounds logical, if they charged me anything, I would not have joined. After you join, you will get an email asking you to make a purchase at one of the affiliated stores, but you do not have to do so, and I did not. If you are interested the best thing to do is look at the online presentation. Again it is totally free and if nothing comes of it, you have wasted a little time, but if it does work, it could be very beneficial. If anybody is interested or if anybody has any questions, post them here.
