I'm looking into selling Tupperware and possibly other things. The only problem is - I only have about 4 girlfriends.I know that sounds sad, but until I had my first child, I had all guy friends. How do you build your customer base if you are new to an area or don't have a lot of people you know interested in the product.

I would start with some booth events. They are getting pretty plentiful in the fall! They are a great way to "introduce yourself" to the community, to network, advertise, and get fresh leads.
I also do a lot of "silent advertising"..which for my business...means
Wearing reading-related shirts..(my favorite one is a "got books" shirt..it's pink, with rhinestones :) I also wear buttons, or my name tag(on of my favorite things to do) to get people asking!

Tupperware is awesome! I know Leigh will take good care of you! I just wanted to add I didn't think I would have anyone to really buy from me and I was worried and I did $1000 in sales my first 4 months! WHOOHOOO
I have 2 parties this month and just booked one for Oct! Don't let your "warm market" determine your business! Step outside the box and show off those catalogs! So many people haven't been to a TW party in years!
Goodluck and I hope you choose to join us!

You can always ask your friends to refer other people to you. Maybe their family members would want to buy from you! And of course from there you would ask those people to refer and so on!!!

I just moved to a new area and I joined a few groups, attended church events, and made myself be friendly everywhere! After two months, I had an Open House (last week) and I had 12 in attendance--which is not that bad for not knowing anyone in town--plus, I got 4 bookings. It's a start.
I would also have an abundance of catalogs and offer to women I meet.

I moved across the country away from ALL of my friends and family AND was the first consultant in the state of Florida for Cherish Bound. I had to start from nothing....my key was I found two people that were very well rooted in the area and had been around for awhile. They were involved in the schools and churches in the area. From those two people I branched off in so many different ways. As I started to make friends in the area I began, and still do, hold one party at my house every month. From those people began coming whether it was one or 15 and then I branched off from there. And of course being a vendor at different events is always a plus. You can even look to post something on Craigslist.com...if you do Tupperware you can post in your area for those looking or needing a Tupperware consultant.

I agree with getting involved in craft/vendor shows or community events. Do some sort of doorprize drawing and collect contact info from everyone that enters the drawing. also have spots for them to check if they are interested in being on a mailing list, hosting a book or home party, or the career op.
Not only can you meet new leads for customers, hosts and recruits at these, but it is also a good way to network with other consultants. They can give you tips on good shows to get into and you can also connect with some of them and start doing openhouses with each other, where you each invite your own contacts. This can widen your customer base quickly! I did an open house with two gals and found one of my best hosts, she is thinking about becoming a demonstrator too! Good luck!

I am really amazed that everyone here bypassed the "I had all guy friends" statement. Contact those guys. Men have apartments - they need the same things women do - storage containers, etc. and they usually don't like to go shopping.LOL If they have girlfriends/wives there's another avenue. Let them know what you are doing and they will buy from you either for their own apartment/house so all they have to do is make a phone call or email and not actually have to go out and shop for it. They can also give your name to their friends. Men can be your biggest customers. Give them a chance to help you start your business.

Robin, I'm with you too! We sometimes sterotype that only woman would want our products. As for my business, men like to decorate toohttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif and buy gifts for others.
As for havinglittle friends, they have friends & family too!Once youchoose you business, share with everyone you meet. Get your name out and let everyone know through catalogs, business cards, flyers, and setting up a booth as a vendor.Just remember setting up a booth ata craft show/flea market/a vendor night sometimes is just meeting others and getting your name out there.
Lastly, I consider myself having many friends, but guess how many have had a show with me? None! At least, so far! I'm still working on them, but in the end I never gave up and I'm proud to say I'm celebrating my 2nd Anniversary and loving it everydayhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley27.gif
Best wishes,

Thanks for the great advice! Those are some really good ideas. I never thought of the craft shows or mom shows and such. I think I'll do it and get this going. Maybe some good extra Christmas money.

You're welcome. I usually find local craft show or event looking for vendors through our local newspaper, but another site I use is: www.craftlisters.com (http://www.craftlisters.com). You have to view them since some only allow 'handmade' items only, but there are many I've found that allow vendors/DS companies.
As for extra money, that's always nice toohttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif
Best wishes to you!

Have you tried joining a local WAHM group? Try looking on www.meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com) and see if there is one in your area.
The group I run (not on Meetup anymore - moved to a regular website) does Bazaars, advertising, charity events and more as a group to help the members get more exposure and make more sales.
