Hey everyone!
I am currently pregnant with my first child and my husband and I have decided that it is important that I work from home when the baby comes. I am going to be joining Usborne Books At Home. The company seems great for me because I love to read and place a high value reading for children of all ages. Anyways, my question is regarding how to work a business that involves party planning around a baby? I was wondering if anyone on here has had experience with this?
My husband works in the oil field so there is never any "set" time for him to be home. So, it would be hard for me to have scheduled a home show depending that he will be home to watch the baby. Now, my parents live a few blocks away and I'm sure they'd be happy to watch the baby, but I don't want to be asking them too much. Then there is always the idea of hiring a babysitter every now and then. Although we want to limit how much we hire a babysitter because our budget will be a little tighter without my full time income (at least until I get this business going). I just wondered if anyone had any tips? The baby isn't going to be here until October, so I have a little while to think this out. Anyhow, thank you all for your help!!

When I started with my direct sales career, I had 2 very young children. During my career I also had 2 more children. My husband worked shift work most of the time, but we also have a couple of years where he worked out of state.
I learned to be creative. When the babies were very little, they came with me. All the moms at my Usborne Book shows loved seeing me with my babies--in my sling or held by the hostess. As they grew, I swapped babysitting with another direct sales mom.
It really wasn't that hard to juggle this. You'll learn your limits and your baby's---but most of all, you have to be creative & be proud that this is a family business.
. I learned to make my presentations short & sweet, so I could leave within 1 to 1 1/2 hours---instead of 2 or 3 hours.

As Kasi said..bring the baby! This is one of the most family-friendly businesses I know of!! No need for babysitters at your shows. Plus...seeing you with your baby will make guests realize..wow..this business is for everyone. AND..they know you won't talk to long...http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
You wouldn't believe how many pregnant womenare at our convention every year...and new moms as well. It was so amazing to see consultants and supervisors walking across the stage to get awards...and then walkingoff the stage to go feed their babies.http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley27.gifhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif
Plus...now is aperfect time to network..think of all the expecting and new moms you will come across! Doctor's visits...lamaze, the grocery store, etc. We had one supervisor who was selling books while in labor! lol
You can do it!! We will be here cheering you on, giving you support, and training as well.

I started At Home America when my son cJ was 4 months old and I brought him to several of my shows - worked out great!

I started direct sales when Alex was 18 months, and I would do playdate parties so I could take him.
When I had Billy, he came with me everywhere! The guests loved to hold him.
Family is also always happy to help out, I've found out.
You can also stack parties if you need to. Do one at 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm so you just have to find someone for that day and work the month.
For sitting, you will actually be surprised. If you have a $500 party, you made $125 (not including bonuses!) for 2 - 3 hours outside the home. If you pay the sitter $25, you still made $100.
I used to meet with daycares and let them know I was bringing along my tester.
You'll find your nitch. :-) I met one mom who's son grew up going to parties and always did fine. He was a great kid. She was a single mom and had no other choice.

Thanks everyone!! I had mentioned taking the little one with me, but since I've never done a party plan business before, I wasn't sure how that would go over. It's encouraging to know that lots of people have brought their babies with them! Thanks for the encouragment!
