View Full Version : Accepting Personal Checks?

06-07-2007, 03:08 PM
Do you guys accept personal checks? I am very hesitant to do it when I sign up just because when I tried another selling business (jewelry) the one order that was placed I got a bad check on. So I didn't even get an order.
I was thinking of accepting them then when I go to cash them just taking them to the banks that they were written from so I don't incur any fees and if there's no money in the acct then the order doesn't get placed.

Also, how hard is it to get a business credit card?

Hi!
You might want to get a prepaid credit/debit card?

Hi Lisa,
I do take personal checks but I only take them from people that I know. We also have a credit card processor that corporate got us a good deal with.

When in doubt you can always wait for the check to clear before exchanging product.

I do take checks, although it's not that often that I get them. I also accept CC, which I take a LOT of.

When people ask me if I take personal checks I make a little joke and say

"sure, your address is on it, I know where to find you!"

with a serious look and a kind giggle - to get my point across that I don't mess around.

I then require their address, phone # and driver's license #...andI verify the info on their driver's license!

I just started telling people that I accept them, but I charge a fee that they get back if the check clears and if I get cherged then that money goes to pay the bank back. It's just to cover my a#%, like a holding fee. It has gone over okay and no one has had any problems, but I haven't actually gotten any checks yet.

Also, I would wait until the check clears to order product.

Ya, I'm just really hesitant. I can accept them and take them to the bank they were written at to cash, which I think I will do. That way no fees and no hassle. If it doesn't clear then no candle. When I worked for the local PD in dispatch we would get a lot of calls (mainly from beauty salons) about bad checks. (Which is actually a misdemeanor here.) Usually it only took one talk from an officer for the person to pay cash, but I did actually see a few times where someone got cited for it. (Which is another reason why I'm so nervous about them.)

I take checks, but I observed the people that pay with checks. Also I asked for their phone numbers and driver license numbers. So far I don't have any problem.

I take checks for Mia Bella and my other business. Seems to be about 80% checks for me....in 6+ years home business, have never had a problem. I go with mygut intuition if the person is trustworthy.... and like Alethea says, if its a new person, I say, "sure, I know where to find you" .....

Same here Debra, knock on wood, never had any problems so far! If I didn't take them, I would of lost a lot of sales over the years. People don't carry cash like they use to.

I never carry cash with me. It drives my husband nuts but I never even have change. I just don't ever think about it.

Let me add also, when I know I am going somewhere that might not take an ATM, like a farmers market, street fair or even a home party, I always stop and grab cash beforehand. I have never taken a bad check from anyone but I have also written checks at home parties that the person then took forever to cash. One such person carried my $15 check with her for over 6 weeks until I called her and told her I was stopping payment on it because I thought it had gotten lost. She laughed and said she had it but she thought I was going to call and buy more stuff(never gave her that impression, did not like what I HAD bought! lol) so she was holding onto it to make it easier. WHAT? Let me give you all a little hint, if you think a person wants to order more stuff, ask them, DO NOT HOLD THEIR CHECK HOSTAGE UNTIL THEY DO! LMAO!Edited by: LDYAPXR
