Hello all, I am in need of being able to work from home, my goal is to be able to work very flexible hours also. I have been a application programmer for many years using (Cobol, reciently Fujitsu NetCobol, and some VB6). For a laugh from the more seasoned professionals I also know Pascal and Fortran. I have started getting some books on HTML, DREAMWEAVER and such. I will be able to put in alot of hours to learn what I end up choosing.

anyway for all of you who program from home what language/tool do you do your best business in?

do you recomend and books/classes/tools to learn it from?

Gotta be careful here. Pick your client base first. If you want to work on large projects for big corporations, your skill set needs to be different (Java tools and OOPS and Oracle) than if you want to hack websites for mom & pop (php & MySQL - free).

I do some programming only for myself now, and PHP / MySQL are my preferred tools. For something fancy, I guessI would go java, but would hire some kid to do it.

Why not get into the web business directly insead of building sites for others?

BTW, I learned fortran and pascal and PL-1 (remember thatone?) in school. From COBOL to OOP may just be too big a conceptual leap. SIteSell takes a lot of the technology out of it for web developers.

Notepad is my weapon of choice. Works like a champ for most any language!

Thank for the reply's. I am picking up HTML quickly, It seems quite straight forward.

I will want to get into more complex web design. My guess is using Java.

I am also looking to do something of my own on the web, just unsure of what that will be.

MonivieBob the sites in you sig how are you affiliated with them, are you on independent associate of the 2 product sites, what about the 3rd?

I remember PL-1, but never took it. I have some skills in newer languages also, so I have some exposure to object oriented programming and the .net framework.

VB6, NetCobol

Also some very specified items such as (PrintSoft's Pres2000 and wordpress)

I have written down some design idea's on a couple of websites for myself to earn some extra money. Then if I can spend some time creating sites for a "fee" I should be on solid ground. I have some professional contacts that will be able to references from without them hurting their own business since they are not in webdesign.

I have a daughter that needs extra attention that I need to be able to give, that I am afraid my soon to be ex will not be able to provide without negative effects on my daughter.

Yes Yes and yes.

I am just in process now of using sitesell for first time. It is lowest on my priority list right now, so it is hard to find time for it. But building a site designed ground up for search engines rather than trying to SEO makes sense to me. That is their big claim to fame.
