What kind of work can you get with web design? Online or local work available? My bro in law took web design(don't know how much schooling) and he works from home with selling merchandise from some websites.

How do you know you are cut out for this work?
thanks,
Jan

I mostly get work from online contacts. Friends refer me as well.

There are so many work trades that are in need of websites. It was the traditional way to run their service ads on local newspapers, yellow pages and so forth but most people nowadays turn to the internet. If you have the skills to do web designs, I say go for it.

I am also developing my web design skills. I am advertising locally right now that I will offer site designs for a very low price.

I'm going to offer these from templates first & then custom sites will be next. We have Dreamweaver but I might invest in some other software for templates or make my own templates.

I can redesign & customize the templates to get a new look from them. I love designing! I could do that all day long.

If you are just starting out, a good place would be contacting churches. They are usually not going to get very technical, and there are hundreds of templates you can get for churches. So every one would look custom. This is where I am starting, and charging a very low set-up and monthly fee to get my customer base built.

I am not sure if you are still reading this posts but I just saw your response to someone and I thought I will ask you some questions. I am a sql and database programmer but never ventured in to the web designing. I am thinking to start web designing. I was wondering what kind of software do you use to make web pages. What should I learn to use? Where do I start? I would appreciate any kind of feed back from you.

Thanks.

Alot of designers use Dreamweaver, Photoshop, & ImageReady. That is a very good web design package.

There are tons of free tutorials online & you can take classes at a local college or adult ed. They also have training online from colleges & paid lessons.

Are Dreamweaver, Photoshop, & ImageReady come in one package or you buy it individually? Thanks.

Photoshop and ImageReady are together I believe (mine were anyway.) But Dreamweaver is separate.
Does anyone recomend any good tutorial sites? I'm a designer and only know very basic HTML and Dreamweaver.
