This was a popular area on the boards, so ... I brought it back.
You all can respond to posts here, but only The Grand Poobah can post new questions.
We had some problems on the old boards with people posting questions
like "How do you like my website?" ... to get traffic to their sites,
and that's not really the purpose of the QOTW smileys/smiley1.gif
So I'll do my best to get a new question up each week, and please feel free to send suggestions for new QUTWs.

My reason is because I'm tired of missing out on my sons life (he is 7 now) and I'm tired of Wal-Mart giving me CRUDDY hours (11am-8pm, 12-9pm, 10am-7pm, etc, etc)! Once I become a full-time wahm I don't think I will EVER be able to go to working outside the home again! Its really hard going to work at wal-mart right now and I'm only working at home part-time so I know that the day I tell wal-mart bye bye will also be a day that I say bye bye to ever working for anybody ever again!

My #1 reason for wanting to be a WAHM...
...FREEDOM
freedom from someone else's timeclock
freedom from having bad bosses
freedom from corporate ceilings
freedom from commuting in awful traffic
freedom from the need to dress UP for work
freedom to be where my kids need me
freedom to be wherever I want to be
freedom to choose the work I love most
freedom to create the work environment I love most
freedom to have no limits on how much income I can make
my top ten reasons - it looks like - but probably the best reason for me is freedom from NEEDING child support from my ex! smileys/smiley17.gif

Talk about new, this is only the second forum I've ever joined and I didn't really understand the first one.
So here are my stupid questions?
1. What's PM? I keep seeing that from Cheryl.
2. I am at home right now because of health reasons. I've discovered I love being at home but I need to be busy and bring in a little money. I've already spent money on two sites that promised work and I haven't seen anything yet. Any help on how not to keep ripped off again? My husband doesn't want me spending any more money and not seeing anything from it - me either!

Hi,
PM is Private Message...You have a button on the bottom of your post which you can send someone a private message that will go straight to their inbox.
My Number 1 reason for wanting to be a WAHM is to be able to spend more quality time with my family.

I love my FREEDOM also!
I am very project oriented, love diversity, love people, love routine but NOT THE MUNDANE!!! Working from a home base allows me to be with my family 75% of the time versus 25%...and quite honestly, I can earn a LOT more money not in a regular J-o-b.
For me ~ it's all about lifestyle and personal control of my space, time and energy! :O) That feels good.

I started to become a stay at home mom when I went on maternity leave, and at the same time my hubby was deployed to Iraq! So I decided to stay home with my baby girl while he was gone for 18 months, and now here 2 years later I'm still home! haha! I like being home all the time for my little girl. When I was young, my mom was gone at work all the time so I know what it's like to be lonely!

Awwww Crystal! Seems like we are in the same "sisterhood".
I am a military wife as well.........we're in Fort Bragg, NC. My hubby just got back from Korea after being gone a year and that's when I started being a SAHM.
My mom is a teacher and I can remember how much fun we had in the summer when she was home all day every day. That's the gift I wanted to give my little ones....a mommy that's always there for them.
Great to meet you all!!!!!

My #1 reason is I crave independence smileys/smiley1.gif I have entrepreneurial genes I guess LOL
What I love most about it though I think is the freedom to schedule my own day around my higher priorities - my husband, my daughter, my home, etc. I have a rough schedule that I follow, but I can adjust it as needed when I want or need to do something else, like today I picked up dh from work on a whim and took him out to lunch (he's the business owner so it was okay). I couldn't do that when I was at a regular job with a fixed lunch hour.
How about this foran interestingqotw: what's the best and the worst part of working from home?

My number one reason is my 2 year old twins. When I was working I never got to see them. I was working 60-80 hours a week, including weekends most of the time. It was high stress, so I was not so pleasent to live with.
Now I just need to find a job so I can help bring in some money to pay those credit cards!

We can't get back all those "lost" times with our kids.
I was a young single parent and did the best I could. Iwas proud of what I was able to do, but it ripped my heart out.
I can't tell you how many times I cried because I missed out on a
soccer game or was late picking up my son... because of my J O B,
actually it was my business...I walked out 5 years ago and never
returned.
I am a work at home Grandma (a young one, lol)
I care for 2 beautiful grandbabies. I make videos for mom and dad. We
just started "creative dance" class and it is 5 minutes from Mom's work
and she can come watch on her lunch hour.
Cheryl's board is "priceless".
Thanks Cheryl!

Hi all,
My # 1 reason, is a bit of extra income coming in to help pay the bills so that my partner doesn't have to work 80 hours a week...and he can also spend some time with our precious little girl...
I am new to this and am just getting used to everything.
Lovely to read and see so many other mums (and a few dads???) are out there either making or trying to make the at home business work...
Anybody else from Australia????
Cheers

I love the fact that your hours can be as flexible as you want it with working from home. Working in the city was just soooo stressful and by the time I got home and hubby was working late there was just so much to catch up on, no time to do anything, not enough hours in the day. Also being able to just work around things without having to ask permission...or hurtle around during a lunch hour, ack, hated that!
And typing in pyjamas, thats cool toosmileys/smiley36.gif

I'm a work-at-home granny (in my forties)I love this site. It has been an incredible inspiration to me and thankfully has motivated me.Iwish I could have found something when my son wasyoung but that didn't happen. Now, I have a chanceto spend timewith my granddaughers too. smileys/smiley1.gif The bad part is that the company I have been with for the several years will be going out of business within the next60-90 daysand I am desperate to find something even if it is part-time.smileys/smiley5.gif
By the way, I did try the online surveys for awhile and was paid accordingly but it just wasn't enough income. At least it wasn't in my experience.

My reason for being a WAHM is my daughter Madison! She is 18 months old and is just the absolute sweetest thing. I also hope to bring in enough of a income to where my husband no longer has to work 2 jobs so I CAN be a stay at home mom! :)

I am a WAHM because after being one for almost 6 years, I thought it would be good for me to go back into the work force for extra money. I missed out on way to much with myfamily, my house suffered, I was always tired and my home business was suffering the consequences. I only worked out of the home for 4 months in an insuance agency and that was long enough. I am glad to be back home where I can put all of my work energies into my scrapbooking business and spend time with my children.

smileys/smiley32.gif You all have such wonderful replies on being WAHM.. I really am hoping that I can find a job that I would be able to stay at home with my two boys 1 and 4.. I am a single mom and I missed out on alot of my older sons baby years by having to work.. I hoping not to miss out on to much of my younger sons.. plus my older boy is going to be starting t-ball soon and I want to be able to go to all his sporting events.
I look forward to talking to you all soon..

My #1 reason for staying at home is it's about darn time!!! I'm 50 years old, I've been working outside the home for around 30+ years, and I'm darn tired of it. But, more importantly, I left a high stress job after I survived cancer, but I still have having side effects from the chemo-radiation (3 years, almost 4 years later). Those side effects make me very ill, my current job is an hour away .... NOT handy when I get sick!
I won't be a wahm though, I'm gonna' be a wahg (a work-at-home-gran!). I'm mom to my 2 dachsies, and gran to 2 3-year-olds and an 8 year old. It'll be nice to be able to visit with them during the week some, instead of always on the weekend! smileys/smiley2.gif

Quite a number of us seem to be new in this. I 'm about one month old in it. But I love your website, its so colourful, beautiful & cheerful.
My reasons for being a WAHM?

I've been working for bosses for 20 years (almost half of mylife!), not your regular 9-5 but most times 7am - 9,10 or 11p.m , including weekends, with crazy targets( you guessed right- in banking!)

I need to be my own boss, work on my own terms, my own hours

Have enough time to be with my family (my hubby, a daughter & a step son)

Have time to really enjoy life, travel and see the world, without having to rush back home after just a week or two of a short vacation b/cos I need to be back at work.

The income for now may not be as high as when I was in banking, but I love the freedom of being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it.It's sheer joy!!
[/list]
Nice meeting you all & I'm looking to learn a lot from this forum.

I didn't even know this was considered a career.lol I stayed at home because it got too expensive to put all my kids in daycare. I started working on things and others wanted them and started asking if they could buy them online. My thoughts in the beginning were "I'm home anyways and love what I do, maybe I can make some money!"
Now I love it cuz I'm home with my youngest who starts school in the fall and I'm home when the other kids get home. Plus I can lounge around in my jammies all day. ;)

This is an awesome forum to visit and so interesting with all the different responses!!!
I became a WHAM due to my child's disabilities requiring me to be available at all times, which I found conventional employers could not be that flexible. We prefer to focus on the ability portion of disability. Not having traditional employmentis really a blessing in disguise because it pushes me to go the extra mile and see what all we can be, which I am confident will result in more than any J O B could provide in the long run. As a single parent and going from $50,000.00 per year to nothing was not easy, but we have transitioned and are doing ok, with the potential to be very comfortable. It is nice to see others out there doing the same.

I am new at forums and the Company I joined on line suggested that I join this one. Even tho' I'm a mom I am mostly a grand mom and I love working from home on the computer. The only survey that I found rewarding (not money yet) is the A.E. Nielsen company. It has potential for prizes and gifts for participating. The others that promised payment seemed to disqualify me for age or ethnicity.

Hello Ladies and Gents:
Ibecame a sahm/wahm in 2001; while I was on maternity leave with our first daugther. We both thought it was the most logical thing to do, to be home with our children and forus to be the primary caregivers. I haven't lookedback and can't bear to work for someone else again, but this time around, I will at least be at home. Presently I operate 3 home businesses and am going to school full time(online) for MT.I wouldn't change it. Being at home with your kidsis a true blessing and I wouldn't change it. My husband supports me wholeheartedly and has helped me to focus on other future home business projects which include my professional experiences.

I'm a work at home grandma, which I'm comfortable with revealing because I can do so without disclosing my age smileys/smiley2.gif ! Hint: I became a grandma when I was 45 and that was yearzz ago!
Anyways, my #1 reason for WAHMing has changed since I started working online in 1998. Now it is that I want my time to be my own, to do what I want, when I want, as I want!
This sounds selfish, but it isn't. What I want is to have financial stability and security enough that my husband can retire, we can spend quality time together, and I have the resources to help others. This includes my grown children and their children, but my working "roots" are in the non profit sector. I volunteered for years, was the "founding mother" of a community center and a farmers market, and my calling is to serve.
Even as I'm on my way to the top of the WAHM field smileys/smiley36.gif I have to help others on their journeys. I just can't seem to do it any other way - if I'm going to succeed, then by golly I'm taking anyone else along that can put up with my peculiar brand of humor. Let's go!
This is my first post on this forum but I know I'm going to like it. I've been wishing for longer days, this forum seems to have reeeeally long weeks (such as this "question of the week"). Leave it to WAHMs to figure this out. smileys/smiley32.gif

smileys/smiley1.gif I'm new here - just joined today. Can't believe that I never knew this type of thing existed! I found your website on a fluke yesterday. Looking to find another source of income for my family...hubby's hours were cut and my job at the school district will be part-time (15 hours/wk) starting in Sept. Can't make ends meet with that. Love my job at the district, although I do want to find something else I can do at home and be here for my kids in the afternoon after school is over - I've just missed too much with them the last few years. I've owned a typing service before when we lived in a college town when my kids were babies and loved it!! Then we moved and I was too far away for anyone to want to commute to get their typing. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Being a stay at home dad saves on the gas bill! I also get to tend to my son's puppy, Deuce.
Now if I can just start earning a few dollars!
Cheers!

Hi Guys,
I am actually a WAHW (Work at Home Wife). We haven't been blessed with kids yet, but I still enjoy the freedom and the flexibility of working at home. I get hives at the thought of going back into a corporate environment.

Hey Everyone,
Hope nobody minds but I am a WAHD. (DAD)
I love the freedom to be at home with my 3 wonderful children. They are age 4 and under. I love how network marketing has given me the opportunity to do this. I use to be an Aircraft Maintenace Engineer and was away from home lots and I missed my first 2 children as babies.I thank god for the opportunity that he has given to me so I can experience everydaywith our new daughter. To everyone's success I wish you all can have what I have now. Never give up on your dreams.
If you think you can or think you can't your right! Henry Ford

livlifefree, that quote is so true!
I love the mix here, WAHMs, WAHDs, WAHGrandparents...We all support each other offline, might as well carry on the tradition online too.
Working at home, we each get the chance to nurture, which I think is why WAHM.com attracts us all. Any place that moms congregate, feels like home!

If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you!

Thought I'd introduce myself and say 'hi' from a heatwavedUKhttp://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif I'm a music teacher with 25 years service under my belt and looking for a change (more freedom, flexibility, etc) and the opportunity to NOT work for the government!

I am a new member today, and I joined because I need to find a way to earn money from home for several reasons.
1. My dh hasn't been able to work since the end of October because he has a very bad back. Yesterday he sneezed and put it out more. I don't see how he is going to be able to go back to work.
2. I have GERD which gets worse when I go out to work. I'm a stay at home person. Stress aggravates it.
3. My mother is 87 years young, and I need to be available if she needs me. We moved back to Ohio to be closer to her.
4. I want to stay home and work.
I like to write so much, that when I was going to college a few years ago, I looked for classes that I thought should have term papers, and if they didn't have any I was disappointed. I was trying to write fiction, but I don't think that's my niche. I've got a blog at blogger.com called Family History Basics. Family History is another of my favorite passtimes. I just started the blog a couple of weeks ago.
I will close after talking (or writing your ear off) Dale

Hi all,
I joined because I have recently become unemployed and thought it a great opportunity to share and learn about some home based business ideas. I'm an engineer by trade and have had some buddies making tons of cash through affiliate advertising on there websites. As I am terribly skeptical, I blew them off untill I saw the income these guys were pulling, so I got involved in my own business. It takes time but nothing compared to the 9 to 5 routine. After just a month I'm starting to make some money, nothing crazy or unrealistic, but as I've been analyzing how this system I've been using works, I've come to realize that's it would be impossible not to do extremely well within 6 months to a year. If your curious, check out my link. Roger

I came online back in 1998 with a custom handknitting site, learned how to earn enough to keep myself in yarn and gas money ;)
Then I helped my husband with his SFI business for a couple years, and last summer I was finally able to strike out on my own (had to wait for immigration papers to come through, I'm a Yankee in Canadasmileys/smiley2.gif
Now my site is listed in Google #16 out of 19,000,000 for my keywords, affiliate marketing tips. My own domain, adding content and backlinks, blogging, and back-ending affiliate products is creating one income stream after another. They start as a trickle and slowly grow.
The beauty of working at home is that whatever you do, it is yours and it will continue to create income for YOU as long as the internet keeps on ticking. It's hard work but so rewarding.

I started to work from home as a mystery shopper and to be honest as high as prices are these days and all the low pay MS jobs its not worth it. smileys/smiley19.gif
Also my kids would be the other reason, I like the fact that I can be home to pick them up from school and not worry about them walking alone--sorry to say its just not safe anymore--, and I just could not afford daycare.

Hi all,
I'm new here, hoping to be a WAHGrandpa - seeing retirement flying up to meet me and wondering how we'll survive if I can't generate some complementary income. Not to mention that the freedom to work in my bathrobe sounds mighty inviting.
I, too found the Stone Evans stuff - for those of you who don't know, he recommends WAHM.com very highly - and it's interesting to hear what some of you have said about it. I'm trying to keep an open mind . . .

Ray I wish you the best with Stone Evans program, personally it did not work for me. I tried it for two months and didnt get anywhere with it, I had to opt out it was costing too much money, and I wasnt making any. I think it would work if you had a least 2 years to put into it. I went right by the program and did everything he recommeded and then some, but it seems to work for other so hopefully it will work for ya Best of luck!!

I learned about this forum from the recommendation of Stone Evans.
I find the forum to be easy to understand. The input is very open and gives me much food-for- thought.

My personal domain started out as a PlugInProfit site. It's a good place to start for learning how to run an affiliate business. I've since moved on to other things, but the concept of multiple income streams has stuck with me.
The best part of following a leader is studying how he or she does it, then eventually venturing out on your own in the same way. Stone's 30-day system is his version of a tried and true system; not to say it's the only one, but getting backlinks, writing content, offering a newsletter are all good ways to build an online business presence.

Why do I want to be a WAHM?
I have worked in a high stress local government J O B for ten years. The money is way better than minimum wage, there is lots of opportunity for overtime the benefits are very good but...
What happens when someone tells you something over and over for so long? Well, you start to believe it right?
This is my J O B: The stress has become increasingly worse, management has become seriously overbearing, we are no longer allowed to function like real people with brains and feeling. Management has come to think of us as machines without common sense or feeling. They seem to have forgotton that we are people. One person makes a mistake, our entire office is punished as a whole, usually for a very smalltiny dumb mistake that affects nobody.Zero respect. Never being told "good job". Day in and day out we are told only of what we are doingthat is wrong.Wow, I think we are actually becoming machines!Okay so stress and liabilityand no respect on the job...the income doesn't match the stress and liability plus there is waaay too much forced overtime and my daily commute is 30-40 miles each way.I just want out!
At this point, I just can't even imagine working FOR someone else.
Plus I have missed soooooo much with my kids, it makes me so sad to think about it. My kids used to ask "Mommy, can't you just stop going?" My youngest had surgery and I could only be there with her til she got out then back off to work I had to go because I couldn't get the time off...talk about feeling like krap! The family had to go on vacation without me becauseI couldn't get the time off.
Whew, sorry I'm rambling!! Bottom line, I want to be in control of my future. Thanks for listening

wow, don't apologize, thats a horrible story. If there is absolutely anything I can do to help, just let me know. I'm a great listener!
I have a client who works in abominable circumstances; the temperature in her office is 40C (that's about 110F!!) She's checking the want ads; she can't afford to just do her home biz, poor thing. I'm helping her prioritize her home biz so hopefully she can quit for good soon.
What some employers do to people is unexcusable!

I don't know if this will post but if it does; the reason I found this site and want to be successful in this endeavor is because of my parents health. My father is 73 and my mother is 60. My mother has a pletheria of maladies and though I have 5 other siblings, it seems I'm the one left with that responsibility. My mother has a lung disease, congestive heart, diabeties, among a few other things. My dad can't handle it all and needs help with the house and yard. My last job new about my situation and we almost lost our mother but she pulled through.
My family is the most important thing to me and I feel like this is the least I can do for them since I don't know how much longer they will be around. I don't want to look back and think what I could have or should have done when I had the chance.
Another reason is to help people know about the bible. I want to spend about 50 hours a month talking to others about the bible and the hope it holds out.
So, this is my opportunity to help my parents, others and myself. If I could find something to help me make a decent living - by that I mean no more than 2000.00 a month and no less than 1200.00 a month is all I need. I'm single and I live by myself so, I'm not here to make all the money that I can. I want to make enough to have sustenance and covering and help those I care about.
If anyone of you all could please let me know some legitimate avenues to help me in reaching this endeavor, please let me know. I don't have any money saved so I can't put it into an existing business or buy part of one. Just to let you all know. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope to hear from you all.
Sincerely,
Michael

My #1 reason for wanting to be a WAHM is my kids. I have 3 boys ages 12,9, and 7. I homeschool them and being a WAHM I can have the best of both worlds. I can be with my kids and work to bring in some income.

I have to say my #1 reason is FREEDOM, to do as I please, such as sewing: alterations for others, quilting, reading and just being able to say yes I have the time to do.......whatever comes up.
I surely enjoy this question of the week idea. Makes this new at home wife/granny feel not so alone in the work at home business.

I became a WAHM aftera work related accident left mewith a partial physical disability and severe chronic pain and muscle spasms. After 2 years of physical therapy and treatments doctors told me I would never work again.
It was my husband and my therapist who encourage me to look for an opportunity to work from home in customer service and sales. I took part of my settlement and furnished a home office, started applying for jobs and got hired.
That was almost 3 years ago. I enjoy the interaction over the phone, showing that I can contribute to our family money and hearing my husband and son tell me that they knew I could do it! It also helps me dealing with my pain level by focusing on something else.

Hi All,
My name is Kim and I am new to all this. I have been a WAHM for a little over a year now and I love it as well. No more missing "firsts" of my littlest and no more missing touchdowns scored by my bigger boys because I am working some crappy job just to have money for Christmas! I also love not having to worry if one of my boys wakes up with a fever. I just keep him home with me!
I have a question for you all-My little guy, Logan is 2 1/2 and is still not talking- mommy and daddy is about all we consistantly get. I am working with a therapist but nothing is helping. I think partly he is a bit spoiled (he also has 2 older brothers 11 and 9). but I am getting pretty frustrated. Any suggestions?

My number one reason is my dogs are really misbehaving and need some structure in their lives! I'm also a property manager and I'm actually burnt out on "people" and their complaints and excuses for not paying rent. I really needed to learn how to relax and get some me time. I'm also learning about diabetes right now, which was a warning sign that I'm not taking care of myself. If I didn't do something to get rid of some of the stress, I may never be able to have kids and be a real WAHM!
Thanks for the site!!

Even though My children smileys/smiley19.gif are all grown and away from homesmileys/smiley32.gif I need kids in my life. Since at 53 I don't see me having any more, I am hopeing though that I will be able to leave the trucking industry; and be a stay at home Auntie, Grandma. Right now I am trying to start a business adventure from the back end of my sleeper cab. I love this sight it has given me inspiration beyond belief. smileys/smiley17.gif I dream of the day that I will be able to stay at home and help the neighbor hood children or give the horse back riding lessons to all the kids in the neighborhood. Not to mention that I really want to foster some kids. God Bless all of you mothers who have the ambition and strenth to run your business from home... Nanny B

Good evening, everyone.
I am working hard at becoming a WAHD. I fiddle around with eBay a bit. I am involved in a question-and-answer website called www.justanswer.com, but it leaves much to be desired in the earnings department. I am on a person's mailing list to receive an invite to become a guide with www.chacha.com, and recently, I found out about www.keen.com. I'm hoping and praying that a combination of these four will eventually enable me to become a true, 100% WAHD.
I dislike my current J.O.B. with a passion. I'm a city bus driver in a major city, and with my schedule and the stress and tension that goes along with the job are just about to get to me. I'm currently working a split shift (8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.), and I'm hardly ever home with my family. I have 3 hours inbetween shifts, but because I live 40 miles from work, I can't afford to come home in between shifts. I have thyroid and pituitary problems that make me very tired and it seems that, if I'm not working, I'm sleeping. I was just informed by my supervisor today that, because I've had too many unexcused absences, I will have a five-day suspension from work. I can't afford that! But who goes to the doctor everytime they're sick? Who can afford a $30 co-pay each time? Not me! But how am I going to drive a freakin' bus when I'm throwing up, got a case of the runs (sorry) or have a fever? I'm just sooooo sick of this crap. Yeah, I could find another job, but I don't want another job. I want to work from home and make enough money to support my wife and daughter. I want to work from home so that, when I don't feel well, I don't have to work and try and come up with an excuse to tell my boss. And I want to work at home so I'll have more time to spend with my family. It just kills me having to be away from them for so long each day. I leave in the morning at 6:30 while they're still in bed and I get home at 9 at night while they're either in bed or getting ready for bed. Seems the only time I see them is on weekends, and for me, that's just not enough. I can't take time from work if my daughter has an after-school play or something.
Anyway, thanks for letting me get that off my chest. If anyone knows of anything else I can do from home that I could make some money doing without an investment, please let me know. I'll be forever grateful.
Thanks for listening and thanks for www.wahm.com!

My reason would also be freedom. I don't have any children, unless you want to count my two cats, so I am not an actual "mom" but I do like this board, and it looks great ! Thanks for letting me be a member here.

Here's one strange and kind of amusing reason: I'm getting older looking, and when younger people see me coming (and everybody is younger, LOL) they often assess who I am by what they see on the outside and not what's on the inside. Working from home on the computer or the phone keeps me younger. smileys/smiley4.gif
But seriously, I still have two children in junior high and one in elementary and really appreciate the flexibility afforded to WAHMs.

Hi
I am a WAHF, hope that´s okay. I´ll take the risk. I werean employe for almost 27, since autumn 2003 I have run my own business. I will never go back as an employe again. I love this freedom, I enjoy to have the time to eat breakfast with my kids, and be able to be at home when they come from school. I love this way to work.
All the best

Hello all!I am new to the forum. I am a work at home man.
I am turning 23 on Oct 2. and I would have to say my number 1 reason for being a WAHM is the feeling of earning what I'm worth.I could not stand working for a salary set by someone else. I used to be a fast food manager. Working at home has taken a huge weight off my shoulders.
Thanks for creating this forum Cheryl

Hello all,
I have a lot of reasons for wanting to work from home just like everyone else here. But for me, I looked at my J-O-B and realized that I was becoming more dedicated to it that to my family. I missed out on raising my oldest two children (long storysmileys/smiley19.gif) and one day...at work...vowed that I would not miss another "moment" with my two kids. Then a family event came up and my boss said I could not go, well he's no longer my boss.smileys/smiley32.gif I'm three weeks into this stay at home thing and just found this site. I am SOOOO excited, now I am dedicated to finding a way to contribute to the household income AND stay home with my kids.smileys/smiley4.gif
Wish me luck, Varinia

Hello to you all WAHM's, & WAHD's!
I became a WAHM because
* I want to be here when my children are sick and can not go to school
* Volunteer at all three schools (elementary, middle school & high school) *wheew* and help my children see that Mums/Dads are still part of their lives even though they are at school.
* Have their snacks ready when they get home from school.
* Have supper always ready when they get home
* Get that alone time when everyone is out and about, so when they get home mum is soo relaxed and calm *lol*
I love being around people, i am naturally a very friendly, bubbly person, it wasn't not wanting to be out in the corporate world, just my children only live these ages once, and I want to be able to enjoy them.
My hubby also enjoys being a WAHD. . . very enjoyable that we both can alway have that time for one another!
Cheryl, TY for making this forum a good place to meet others!

Hey there,
Great forum! I guess my #1 reason for doing what I'm doing is to work hard for a short period of time and it will look like I''ve worked hard forever! Having the abilitity to do what I want, when I want and to help others to reach their dreams and goals is the utmost satisfaction in all.
Cheers to Success,
Wanda

Hello ! Please refer to me as 'Yenots', stating why will not help this posting. I am in my 70's, married and one child, correction grown up daughter and soon to be a grandfather, a joy ( I hope soon to come). My wife is too impatient.
Why am I here? If I am to be a grandfather, demands for money are going to rise, no doubt about that, remembering only too well my own childhood, in particular, my grandparents. I must not forget the stories I have heard about my wife's childhood and grandparents either. Doubts are forming regards my diminishing pocket money, OH HECK! Allow me a second or too to sum it up, I would like a chance to earn a little more than I have left. Thanks for looking GES. (Yenots)

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.I am just starting out trying to be a wahm. I have 4 teenagers I'd love to be home with after they get home from school and on breaks from school so I can take them to the places they always want to go. My goal is to make enough to take them to Hawaii which for now is their dream vacation.
I plan to visit here quite often and am always open for good advice. I can't wait to be my own boss!!!smileys/smiley4.gif

Hello Ladies, I'm new to this forum. A friend recommended the website and I've been clicking around there a lot this afternoon. Impressive!
Why a WAHM? Well, after giving birth twice within 16 months, I quit my full-time (teaching) job back in 1994, and started working from home way back then. I also continued teaching part-time for many years after that, but once bitten by the 'work-for-yourself' bug, it stayed with me as a strong passion. My sons are now in middle school, and I no longer seek the 'trading hours for dollars' routine much. I may take on something part-time if the right position appears, but my primary source of income exists within doing my own thing.
Those of you with infants/toddlers might find like I did that once you learn that you can make significant income from a home office, anything else pales in comparison. The flexibility of schedules and freedom becomes just too much to lose, and I've become dedicated to making the most of it for myself and other women as well. Best to you all from Carol in St. Louis.
p.s. GO Cardinals!

My number one reason for wanting to be a stay at home mom is that I get to schedule my own hours. If my child has a conference at school or has to go to the doctor, I don't have to beg for the "unexcused" time off. Because I live in Michigan, the winters can also be a great incentive for working from home. And let's not forget the great PERK of working in our pajama's!!!!

Can I share a Favorite Quote Here?
It is from the book "Think and Grow Rich" By Napolean Hill, I am reading it now, and when I stumbled across this quote I was really powerfully struck by it.
"Every adversity, every failure and every heartache brings with it the seed of an equivalent or a greater benefit."
What do you think?

I became a SAHM years ago when my Irish twins were born, and I realized that the incubation period for chicken pox was 2 weeks - so just when child #1 got over her chicken pox, child #2 would start HIS - and it's real hard to maintain a corporate job and juggle time off for sick kids LOL
I became a WAHM when I realized that now that I'm home all day, there's LOTS of things I'd like to have and buy for the house and the kids . . .

I want to be a Mum that's there for her kids whenever they need her, and I especially don't want to miss out on any Sports day etc. My Son is currently 3 and I have missed out on a lot of his development cos I work full time as the breadwinner in the family.

Hi everybody
I am new here,so Hi,my reason for wanting to be a WAHD,well I have many, the most important is the obvious one of being at home with my family,Especialy as the moment my current job takes me away from family every 4 weeks for 4 weeks at a time. But i will soon be able to retire from this and be able to determine my own working hours and above all my own income. Its all about the ability to create your ideal life which is virtualy impossible when working for somebody else.

I'm a stay at home
mom because I gave birth in order to raise children, not to have others
raise them. Unfortunately, real life demands that money be earned
to buy the things we need and want.

It is great to be at home and have control of your time; it is also great that I do not have to be controled by a boss. I can see my wife all the time help her on in everything.

A home business allowed me to be a full time stay at home mom of my 6 kids and homeschool them too. I retired from Nursing and thanks to the income we have achieved from home, I can stay retired.
I love that I don't have to be involved in at work "politics". I love being available to help friends when they need it. I LOVE not feeling stressed out and all in from a demanding 12 hour shift.
Most of all I love being accesible to my family 24/7 and participating in all the things that are important to them.

LeslieD I absolutely LOVE your answer!!!! smileys/smiley32.gif
End of April will be a new experience for me - my first child [son] will be due. Being only 22, working and going to school full time.. I want to find a new direction in my life. Living in California is not cheap and I can't expect my parents and my boyfriend to support me and to baby sit for me while I continue with what I have going now. I will continue with school but I'd love to work from home to be there for my son [minus the hours of school smileys/smiley5.gif].I only have a year left of school and will be graduating with an AA in business. So for right now I'd love to find a job that I can do from home until I get get my schooling done and then start my own business.
Any tips, advice, links, etc, etc would be greatly appreciated. I've never had to apply for a job before. I've been at the same place since I was 16 years old, and was asked to work there, so I have no experience in looking for a job. smileys/smiley9.gif
I'm also hoping to get to chat with other Moms on here!

Well, in a sense I have always been a work at home mom because we raised our children on the mission field and were always pretty available to them even though I always had plenty of WORK to do. But now I want to be an internet work at home (Grand)Mom in order to have extra money to buy things for my awesome grandson and to be available to help care for him at any time at the drop of a hat while my daughter teaches therapeutic horseback riding to special kids. She enjoys what she does and I enjoy what I do - the best of both worlds!! smileys/smiley4.gif

Freedom! Freedom to work. Freedom to play. I love being with my kids but I also enjoy working. I never liked having to go to work. Get up, shower, makeup, get dressed in some uncomfortable suit and heels. I love wearing my comfyclothes. Computers and working at home is the best thing. Hey, it beats sliced bread if you ask me. smileys/smiley4.gif

Why I became a WAHM:
Originally, because I didn't have a choice. I was fired from my job when I was six months pregnant. I tried to get another job, but potential employers would glance discreetly at my belly during the interview...no chance they were going to take me on and have to worry about the health insurance and post-baby leave! I was a liability!
That didn't mean my bills stopped coming in, they don't get six weeks off after you deliver a baby smileys/smiley36.gif
So I started a mad dash to find everything I could about working from home on the internet. I mean, there HAD to be something, right? Well, after a bunch of scams and people asking for money I was so lucky I found WAHM.com!
It's an amazing resource, and the way the sections are if you are looking to get into a specific niche, there are all the questions and gripes and success stories right there! I mean, how handy is that?!
Now, looking back, I wouldn't give it up for anything. My youngest turned one on the 9th and my oldest turns two on the 22nd. So for the next week I have two one year olds that aren't twins smileys/smiley4.gif
So I could say that I did it to work in my jammies, because that's why I do it now...but really...I did it because I didn't have a choice. Or maybe it was my destiny, or maybe it was God interceding in my life. Who knows...I'm just SOOOOO happy to be here and working from home NOW!

I would love to be a wahm so that I can stay home with my 3 month old daughter. She's beyond everything I've ever dreamed of, especially when I was told it would be difficult for her to get here. I'm still looking for a wah job no luck though. I'll keep on trying with the hope that someday, I'll be a full time wahm.

I became a work at home mom so that as a single parent, I could finish my college degree at a faster pace, and one that was most sufficient for my son. Sometimes this meant working long nights, over night after my son went to bed, but it was worth it because I was able to spend time with him.
Now that I'm married, I am able to set my own schedule and be readily available for my son and my husband, and soon to be our new baby due in June. Even though I may not ever use my college degree, it was important to be able to show my son how important it is to finish school.

I quit my full time job about nine years ago when our first grandchild was
born so I could be there to help out with her as both of her parents were
working and going to school. She just turned 9, and now we have 5 more,
ages 7, 4, 3, 2, and 1 and twin grandchildren due in a few months here! I
wouldn't trade the special times with each one of them for a pot of gold - so
there is no looking back for me! I love being a wahg - available to them all
pretty much whenever they need me, still finding the time to work at
fulfilling a long term dream and goals of my husband and I - to be
succeesful wah!

My reason for being a stay at home working mom are my two kids. THey are a bit older and I have been working at home for the last 9 years. I love to be able to take care of my children as well as contribute financially. It also provides me with something to do other then take care of the kids, the house, the laundry, etc. I was on bedrest while pregnant with my son and decided to start my own business. That was 9 years ago and haven't been back to work for someone else since. Now, I love what I do and have my morning free with my daughter who is in K. I would love to have another child, and working at homeallows that freedom. Now, the next step for us may be homeschooling...I'll keep you posted!smileys/smiley2.gif

Back in the day, before the Industrial Revolution, Many, many people were home based business owners. Or at the very least worked for themselves.
That was their "trade." They would trade goods or services, for cash, or other goods or services, sometimes referred to as bartering.
The farmer would raise crops, harvest them, and ultimately market them to his surrounding community. The blacksmith would shoe all the local horses, and the local doctor would have an office/hospital right in his own home.
While some folks, were "hired hands" to some of these people, many of them were actually apprentices, learning the trade, in hopes of someday being "qualified" and skilled enough to be in business for themselves someday.
While these people no doubt worked hard, and long hours, they also had the freedom to take a day off from time to time, have a picnic with the family, or just go fishing. They were there own boss.
Along came the industrial revolution, and the "security" of a steady job. This was a tremendous economic boom time, for company owners mostly, but also for a few skilled workers.
The blue collar workers of the day put in 12-14 hour days, and if they wre sick, or hurt, they almost always lost their "secure" job.
But most were happy, as at least they, and their family were surving....
Skip ahead to the 1st decade of the new millenium. Today is May 3, 2007. 2 years ago, the company, that I had worked for, for 20 years, as well as 3 generations of family members that did in fact retire, and achieved their dreams of financial security, moved to Mexico.
BOOM!! 3,000 jobs gone like the wind.
So, as many of you great people already know, the idea of a secure job, just keeps dwindling and dwindling, with each passing day.
So, what's the solution? For many folks, there may not be one, and that's sad. They just haven't been taught about self entrepeneuership, and how they truly can cut their own teeth.
But for the people on this forum, the ones tha have the power in their hands, to change their own future, simply by helping others to change there's, there is GREAT HOPE!!
Believe in your dreams, believe in yourself, and believe in whatever company, or program, you may be presently working.
Each success story in the home based business industry, is a catapult to another suuccess story. Play your part, good people. I'll be cheering you on!!!
Thanks alot,
Tom

My #1 reason for being a WAHM (Work At Home Man) hehe http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif, is to have more free time to spend with my beautiful wife and children. I never want to have to work in the "Rat-Race" again!

Hi everyone,
I joined a few days ago, but i am finding this be very informative and every is very friendly. The reason I am trying to work from is that my duaghter in law has been diagnosed with wegeners disease. If anyone knows abouth this disease let me know. I am trying to watch my 18 month old grandson and my 6 years old grandaughter as much as i can while mommy goes to dr. visits, etc. I have worked as an adminstrative assistant, accountant, secretary etc., for the past 25 years. Alot of my duaghter in laws family is in the new york area, so she really needs someone close by. This is really scarey for all of us. These two beautiful children need ther mommy. Three oclock this am i got a call to come and get the children because she had severe chest pains and difficulty breathing. My son called an ambulance and i left with the children so they wouldn"t see what was going on. They think she may have a blood clot in her lungs. She is also 10 weeks pregnant. Anyway that is why iam trying to work from home. Please pray for us .
I know this was a long winded explanation but sometimes you just have to vent.
Thanks to everyone for being here.

I love being a work at home mom because I get to see my daughter do her "firsts" rather than having a babysitter tell me what new thing she did. Plus I love that I can contribute to my husband's income without having to leave my house :-)

Many of us have aspirations of a more prosperous life, more time
for ourselves & family, money for retirement, a larger house, a
fancy sports car, grand vacations, you name it . . .
Despite what many shysters would like you to
believe, there's no such thing as "get rich quick."
However, there ARE truckloads of dollars to be
made on and off the Internet...IF you know how
or have mentors to teach you every step of the
way.
To be successful in your own business, you must determine
the most important activities that drive the business and then
you must do them consistently.
In truth, to have major success working from home in your own
home based business is not any different from having major
success in a traditional business.
To do it, you need to have unique, in demand, high quality
products to market and an effective method or system
for marketing those products, that never requires anyone
to personally have to sell anything.
There are 600 million people on the Internet.
At least 125 million of them are looking for ways to
generate CASH online.
The #1 reason I'm in this business, that I'm here on this
planet, is because I want to spend more quality time with
my family.

I have to agree. There is no get rich quick scheme. If you start doing what is necessary and then do a little more than what is necessary you will soon start doing the impossible.

My number one reason for being a wahm is my children. I love being home with them and being there when they get home from school. It is so nice to be your own boss when you have children because you make your own schedule. If you need time off you can take it without having to get permission from someone higher up. You are the higher up. You can also set your own pay. If you need to make more money, then schedule another party. There are so many great reasons that I would be here all day listing them all.

Karen, great number one reason! That's the way it should be. Our kids are our future. We need to be there to 'form' them. I was so blessed to be home (most of the time) with my kids while they were growing up.
I wish you well! Much Success to you!

so how does this topic/forum work exactly? I see a lot of people posting about advertising their business and others saying hello but the topic is supposed to be question of the week. I am confused. do the members post questions they have or does cheryl?
I have a question, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself paying off my last collections bill, traveling the country with my husband because our daughters will be out on their own and being retired early in life so I can start living instead of surviving.

I am another who is home because of health reasons. My two teens both have special needs and a lot of appointments, plus I have health problems myself and often need to juggle doctor appointments for myself and the kids. When I worked a conventional job, my stress level was through the roof because I was always worried about asking for the necessary time off. I love being home, although I've had to try several different home-based jobs to find the right fit....

I've been home since my son was born four yrs. ago, and I love it!
I always wanted to be a WAHM because I wanted to be the one to see my son grow up, and do those cute, funny, and sweet things that little boys do. I wanted to enjoy time with him and not have to worry about how he was being treated while I went to work. It's been the best decision I ever made plus I am also homeschooling him! smileys/smiley4.gif

Hello Ladies I am also new to the forum and my goal to become a full time SAHM is because I have a wonderful family and want to be able to attend school functions and be there in their times of needs not just when my work schedule allows it!! I have been in Passion Parties for almost 2 yrs now and LOVE IT!! I was able to pay for my wedding with it and plan it all by myself and I think that in the future life can only get better when I wont have to rely on outside jobs to get the bills paid!!

I have been a SAHM for 2 years and I have recently become a WAHM. It seems there are so many of you out there doing this successfully. It's hard to envision where my business willbe a year down the road or for that matter 5 years down the road but I am doing this for my 3 children (6 years, 4 years and 6 months old). Being able to take them to school and pick them up, go on field trips and summer vacation those are the highlights of being at home regardless of the sacrifices.

Hi everyone! It has been about a year or maybe more. So many things has happened in the past year I have lost track of time. My computer crashed last January and I lost a lot of info and didn't have this forum url written down anywhere so I had no way to get back to it until a few days ago when I saw it advertised on another website. So here I am again and I have to say it is a pleasure to be here again.

Pinball,
I have given a few of these a try. It seems like if you're just doing it yourself, you can make between $25-$30 a month not trying very hard. But in order to get any real money, you have to get referrals under you. You have to distinquish between completing offers and real opinon surveys. Most sites offer both but you can only do a couple opinion surveys a day. You can complete as many offers as you want though.
Cashcrate, Inbox Dollars, and Send Earnings will credit you even if you don't complete the entire offer - sometimes you get into them and they go on and on and on. Once you have completed the first few pages, if it doesn't end, just quit out. You'll still get your .$40 or whatever.
I found a great article with tips about how to go about using one of these sites on www.workfromhomeinstead.com (http://www.workfromhomeinstead.com)in the 'add a little to your household income' section. Read this first. That's how I got started. The first thing they tell you to do in get a junk e-mail account and boy am I glad I did! Also, if you want to sign up for any of the offers that pay big bucks, they usually want you to pay shipping or something for a "free" trial, so another tip in this article said to purchase a visa gift card so you don't have to use your real credit-card number. Worked like a charm and that's how I've made the most money.
Good luck!

I am so tired of working for someone else, I put in the time they get the profits? Not what I want to do. I hate sitting at a desk...all day long. I like to work the hours that I want to work not when someone else wants me to be there. How do they know I am hungry at noon? LOL I'm usually not. I have lots of reasons, these are just a few.

I wanted to be a SAHM for quite a while and this board put the ball in motion for me. I am so thankful that Cheryl created this forum! I was tired of missing out on family activities, my own life, being told not to be a second late, when to eat, how much I am worth, that I'm bad if I get sick, etc. So I fired my boss, and I don't regret not one moment of it! I only wish I knew about this sooner. My hat goes off to all the SAHM's! Don't ever look back, just keep moving forward!!!

My #1 reason is that I do so much for other people that I need a very flexible schedule. My father is 80. My kids have ADHD. My neighbor needs me to do for her as she is disabled. Then there is the obligatory husband. LOL I'm a busy mom!
Thanks for asking!

My number 1 reason was freedom too. Both time and money
freedom.
However, now that I accomplished that, continuing to set an
example of all onecan accomplish if they choose to, and helping
others do the same as I have, has become the number 1 reason
to continue to build my business even larger.
Thankfully, all my loved ones will at least be aware of all
the choices one has as to how to earn and grow income,

My motivation to be a work at home dad is to build a business that can serve as my freedom builder, retirement plan, and a means to provide wealth for my future generations (train my children to take it over when I cannot work it anymore :)

I am new to these boards and I'm so excited to meet new friends! I would definitely say flexibility is my number 1 reason! I enjoy having the time to volunteer in my kids schools among other things. I've been an engineer for 10 years and I have no desire to go back to corporate America!!!

Hello,
I'm new to the forum. I'm dmhjmh from Texas. I'm a stay-at-home mom of a small child that has severe allergy induced asthma and I need to find a job that I can do from home so that I can help pay off our forever growing medical bills. Any ideas?
Thanks, dmhjmh

LOL. You gals have made my day. That wasn't even the question of the day yet and it took off like wild fire. lololol..... Kudos.
I'm enjoying all your answers. I love it when moms can stay home with the kids...the most important job in the world. I don't know how some you do it. Like Beth (scrapsnsuch) says, she was tired all the time. There is a divorced mother of four at our church and I have to take my hat off to her. I don't know how she does it all.
Happy Easter Weekend and Blessings to you all.

I've been a WAHM since 1999. My answer to this question would be different dependent on when you asked me. Originally, it was because I was a single mom going to college fulltime and working 30+ hrs/wk and I felt like I was not getting ahead in life as well as wasn't spending enough time with my 2 kids. Additionally, I took a 4 month maternity leave when I had my 2nd kid and it was so hard to leave him after that as well as it was hard to express enough milk on a daily basis for him to drink at day care. He also had asthma and I hated leaving him.
Fastforward to now: I'm married to a great guy and my 2nd child is now9, his brother is 3 and my eldest is 12. I wah because I want to be involved in their education and home to talk with them and teach them. I also wah because I love working for myself, I love the income, the flexibility and the tax breaks. I enjoy being an entrepeneaur (sp?).
I love this website because, for me, it let me know that it would be possible to WAH. I saw so many mommies on here doing it that I felt encouraged.
I personally would like to seemore single moms would explore the option of working at home-especially is they live in a high cost state. IMO: It is easier to make money this way than at a job.

I am one of those people who just doesn't fit into that box of work 8-5 with a short lunch break and maybe 2 weeks vacation every year (if I'm lucky). I always wanted to be my own boss and create my own income. I also have a mom and aunt who are in their 70's and don't drive anymore. I have the freedom to take them to doctor visits or to the store whenever they need help. I am also able to be there for my family. Some peole have corporate jobs where they make lots of money but they don't have any TIME. Working from home I have a good income and the time to enjoy it!! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

How about,
"What is your #1 reason for wanting to be a WAHM?"
To make a long story short...
last summer my s/o was out of work for 3 mths due to having sugery. This killed us financially and we are reaping the downfall of it now.
I have MAJOR anxiety and that keeps me from driving so being a WAHM is the perfect j-o-b for me. Add to that I truly enjoy being at home with my kids and it makes it all perfect anyway!

As of the first of this year, I have become layed off/retired from a bank that I worked for. I had been there for 1 month shy of 34 years. The bank was bought out by another bank and the new bankdid not want me. Their loss. Anyway, I do not want to be in the banking atmosphere any more, so I started a business frommy home doing clothing repair (hems, sems, zippers, etc) and baby items, etc.
My business is not that booming yet, I have only startedaltering clothes since about February.About the time I think that I have nothing else, someone calls for work to be done. Theyheard about me from others. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
Word of mouth is sometimes the best advertisement. Slowly but surely I will be able to make a go of this at least for part time employment.
Anyway, I enjoy being home so that I can be there for myolder children andmy grandchildren as needed.

I worked for many years in the health care industry (administration as opposed to direct patient care) then I had the opportunity to work with my sister in our in home business. We have been at that home based business for almost 25 years now and enjoying every moment of it. My biggest concern when I started doing this was that I thought I would get bored - that's never going to happen. I love the lifestyle, the business and talking with people from all over the country who love owning some of our work.
Together, we (both divorced Moms) have raised two daughters (one each) , bought a house and kept our heads above water while doing what we love. We get to create new art work and market it to the world and neither of us owns a pair of high heels!
I'm so glad that I found this forum, it sounds like I could really get addicted.

Yikes, it's been way too long since I've last posted here! The #1 reason I work from home is for my kids. They both have Type 1 Diabetes and my oldest misses a lot of school because of it. A simple headcold will put him out for a week. My youngest spent a week at Children's Hospital recently due to the stomach flu, messed his blood sugar number's up really bad which caused the flu to be even worse. So other then the typical "financial freedom" that we all strive for, freedom to work my own schedule is top priority.
