I've been a SAHM since my DD was born in 2002. I've been taking classes in Website design HTML, CSS etc. for the past few years in hope to start my own business when DD goes to school and work from home and be available for her and make a little better income/flexibilitythan I had as an administrative assistant prior. What do I need to do? The only websites I have created were for school projects so I really don't have a portfolio. Do I need to start doing some freebies out there to build my portfolio before I actually start pounding the pavement for clients? Also, do I need to start learning SEO? What is hot in the market these days? What do I need to learn?

Thanks in advance!

Melissa

Your portfolio could start with designing your own business website. Maybe install a few features that you think clients might be interested in to show that you can do it (ie: forums, blog, graphics, etc.) (I need to do that myself!!)

I know that CMS (content management systems) are the hot thing right now. I also need to get a jump on that!!

Do you already have a business website?

check out oreilly media's web site, they have this thing called Safari Bookshelf

for $39 a month you have unlimited access to all of their books...100% of the content! I have been reading all I can on HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL...plus everything else I can get my mind around! These are the books that you see at the store that are usually $49.99 and up!

If I were you, I'd work on templates and CSS designs...check outtemplate monster...their designs start at like $50 each... then you can add the templates to your portfolio. Also, that will keep you from having to do freebie work!

HTML, CSS and PHP are the basic requirements. Javascript is nice just to
understand what it is, but the amount of actual "programming" most web
developers do with Javascript is insignificant. MySQL is good to know for
the same reason but unless you're actually building the database itself,
it's only necessary to know PHP.

Some day we should do an article on exactly what client-server is and
how it works.

Keep the example sites simple. Super-amazing mega-ultimate
extravaganza sites always break in at least one browser.smileys/smiley4.gifIt's more
important that people actually be able to read the site.
