I'll have to vote for pumpkin pie.

My favorite Thanksgiving receipe is Sweet Potato Casserole. It's
basically mashed up sweet potatoes baked with pecans, butter and spiced
rum. Really yummy.

I would have to say that I like the stuffing the best. It must be the way that my family cooks it, but I look forward to that more than I do to eating the turkey. I also love the cranberry sauce, even though when I was younger, I couldn't stand it. It is now one of my favorite things at the thanksgiving table.

OMG!! Love my moms green beans covered in velveta cheese, and oddly my sister homemade mac N cheese with Jalepenos!!! (watery mouth) Im not much of a cook, I always try, but everyone laughs... thats okay... I laugh at myself too!! This year, we are going to grandma and granpas for turkey day, grandma had a massive stroke in Feb. and miraculously recovered with almost no signs, doctors told us she was dying as we speak, no time for goodbyes... gramps said the heck with that, rushed her to another hospital where they put a stunt in her head to drain the fluid, she was in a coma for a little over a week, couldnt walk or remember much and now shes got herself joineb back in with tops (weightloss place) and dug out her old sewing machine to sew with me, walking, talking and bossing gramps around, just like old times LOL. So the fam. decided we better make it special this year! My grandmother is remarkable, God has truely blessed our family!!!

Oops... got carried away!! Just cant wait for turkey day!!

That's a hard one because for me it's a toss up. Traditionally it has always been green bean casserole, but ever since I started making it throughout the year, it doesn't seem quite as special.

A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to sweet potato casserole, I think that actually might be my favorite!

It's the cornbread and sausage stuffing.. I love it so much.. passed down from generations. My great-granny was the best cook.. I loved it so much..did I say that already.. </span>that it's one of the many I know how to cook without a recipe.

It's like the Brady Bunch song.. You know the words because you heard it over and over, and I think the youngest I remember being reeeeally interested in cooking around the holidays is about 6 or 7.

So.. I make the stuffin with my eyes close now.. smileys/smiley2.gif

I love it so much!!

Mine is really simple.

Here's the recipe:12 egg yolks, 2 evaporated vitamin D milk, 1 Condensed milk and 1 teaspoonful of vanilla extract. And you got yourself a delicious Flan. Mix all these ingredients together and bake for one hour.

adopted and I LOVE it...can't get enough :) Being in the Navy, I rarely

get to be home for the holidays, but it's nice having a little touch of

home with me wherever I am. Mom's stuffing will be my contribution to

our office Thanksgiving this year!

But mmmmmmmmmmm...the Pecan Pie is a close one too :)

Rutabagas! Boil 'em, mash 'em, smother iwth butter. My Mom in New England always called them 'turnips' - heck, we didn't know any better! It always tooka lot of muscle to chop them up after peeling - - - umm, I buy them now in smaller sizes!

Turkey gravy...Yummmm!!!!!!! Poured over practically everything - mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, rutabagas.

(Nitawanita, real turnips are great too and can be boiled, mashed and smothered with butter! I like rutabagas better though, because they're usually sweeter.)

Rebex's NO-FAILFruit Salad:

Note: Depending on where you live as the seasons for fruit, I'd recommend fresh fruit, if possible. However, this recipe is going to be based on the assumption that no fresh fruit is available smileys/smiley17.gif

1 can of mandarin oranges, 1 can of chunked pineapple, 1 can fruit cocktail (light syrup preferred). 1 heaping handful of coconut. 1/2 handful of chopped pecans (or other chopped nuts). 3 handfuls of small marshmellows. 1 large container of cool whip and 1 tsp of vanilla.

Mix all ingredients together softly and smoothly. Refridgerate over-night. Top with a few cherries before serving.

Excellent light desert! Everyone loves a light and tasty fruit salad!

Homemade Norwegian Noodles
Very EASY to make:

Beat 4 eggs, add a dash of salt,
mix in as much flour as they will take
(if it starts separating in layers, you've
gone too far) but the stiffer the better
roll out with a rolling pin about 1/4 inch thick
cut into 3/4 inch strips (pizza cutter works!!!)
drop into boiling chicken broth

It's interesting to read about all the favourite Thanksgiving food from our members. Honestly, some of these Ido not know before, as I thought the normal fare ismainly turkey, ham and minced pies. When I was in New Zealand some years' ago during theChristmas period, my friend baked some minced pies for the Thanksgiving dinner and that was in fact the first time I tasted- it was good. The Catholics in Singapore celebrate Thanksgiving with local food together with turkey &amp; ham.

Here is another great way to fix green beans!

1. Fry one pound of bacon.
2. Set bacon aside on paper towels.
3. Discard all but two tablespoons of bacon drippings.
4. Saute sliced mushrooms in remaining drippings.
5. Put a layer of green beans on botton of large cassarole dish.
6. Next, put a layer of mushrooms and crumbled bacon.
7. Cover with baby swiss cheese.
8. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used. Make sure you end with cheese.
9. Put in 350 degree oven for approx. twenty minutes or until cheese is melted.
10. Serve hot.

This is one of our family favoritess

MY stuffing.....I'm a Lacto-ovo vegetarian too. No Stove-Top for me. We like 'wet' stuffing, not the dry, loose stuff. I mix dry stuffing, onions (chopped fine), vegetable stock (store bought is ok) and some egg to bind and bake it until done. It's so yummy. This is how my granny made it and we love it.

2nd fav is candied sweet potatoes and last year I found a recipe that uses orange juice in them and they were WOW!

Mine is really simple! I like Cranberry Pear sauce.. basicly if you take pears and sautee them in butter, vanilla, and cinnamon.. then take canned cranberries and heat them in a pot with the pears you prepared, transfer into a pretty dish and refridgerate.. it looks like homeade cranberry sauce.. and it tastes really good! As long as I can remember, I always looked forward to my Grandma's stuffing for Thanksgiving. She's passed away and though I've tried to recreate her recipe, it's just not the same.

Now, I'd have to say I like the turkey and my sister-in-law's stuffing best!

October 8th is the Canadien Thanksgiving. Do Canadiens typically serve/eat the same things that the US traditionally serves/eats? They should be having a feast and us US citizens still have to wait around 6 weeks.

I'd have to say that it is a two-way tie between the candied sweet potatos, and the stuffing. Ofcourse the mashed potatos with gravy is right up there too.

Good thing I just ate or I'd have to go stuff my face after reading this tastey food thread, eek!

Ok, I do like pumpkin pie, but I prefer Sweet Potato pie (similar, but using sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin for filling)

I have a few overall favs though:

Chicken Dressing w/ beets (yes, it's a combo must)
Sweet Potato Pie with fat free whipped cream (just a dallop)
Candied Yams with the pecans
Home made mac n cheese!

It just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Candied Yams (Sweet potatoes really) not with marshmallows just brown sugar...
Then Mom's homemade Pumpkin Pie with a big dollop of CoolWhip....

Then something my Grandmother used to make, I finally found the recipe last year, and it is getting added to the line-up. We always called it
Pink Stuff. The main ingredients arecherry pie filling, pineapple, pecans.

But I also like "Grandmother's secret Cranberry sauce recipe" but I will share it here... you get a can of cranberry sauce, open it, and carefully slide it out and slice... (that was fromGarrison Keillor's Praire Home Companion years ago)

Honestly I look forward to the whole meal...

My mother-in-law makes the BEST pumpkin pie from REAL pumpkin - not canned, 'twas to die for!
...AND she'd make a separate pie just for me cause I liked it so much. Sweet lady...I'm divorced now and really miss her. I tried making her pie from scratch once and it totally flopped (flat), more like pumpkin pancakes. Cranberry relish! Oh my gosh, it's so good and so simple to make. You have to like a sweet/sour kind of mix thought.. Here's the recipe if you like to try:

1 bag of cranberries
1 whole orange (cut and seeded--leave peels on!)
1 cup sugar

Grind cranberries and orange in food processor or food mill till kind of fine-depends on the texture that you like. Mix with 1 cup sugar. Stick in fridge. The longer it sits in fridge the sweeter it gets.

It's that simple. Now that makes a small batch. We use 3 bags cranberries, 3 oranges, 3 cups sugar to feed our rowdy bunch. The best part is nobody but us 7 brothers/sisters care for it, I guess because we grew up with it on the holidays and it's a tradition for us. Only one of the sisters-in-law like it so it leaves more for us.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

My favorite Thanksgiving food is "Smoked Turkey." Here is a quick, but complete, description of how to do it, and what you can expect out of it. Get your turkey. If it's frozen, thaw it. If it's not frozen, don't worry about it.
Take all those things they stuff back into the chest cavity and give 'em to the cat. Get your smoker going. Get a big bottle of good "Italian Salad Dressing." A.K.A. "Oil and Vinegar Dressing." DON'T BUY THE CHEAP STUFF, IT WILL NOT BE SATISFACTORY. When the smoker is ready, put the turkey in, fill that chest cavity with the Italian Salad Dressing, put the lid on the smoker. Put some Hickory chips in the water pot. Smoke the turkey for one hour per pound. DO NOT BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE TURKEY BEING PINK WHEN YOU CUT IT, THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED. When you serve the turkey this way, don't be surprised if everyone thinks it's ham. Even the breast meat will be moist and flavorful.

I like the whole idea of Thanksgiving dinner from cooking the turkey with traditional stuffing(I cook the turkey and prepare the stuffing in our house) to the potatoes and gravy with cranberry sauce and of course finished off with fresh pumkin pie topped with fresh whipped cream. Can't beat it in my books. This is my absolute favorite meal of the year.http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif

Oooh, thanksgiving is just around the corner in Canada so I can't wait.
My favourite is actually a non-traditional Thanksgiving food, from Croatia. I guess it can be considered an old "peasant" recipe (although you can find it in a lot of high end restaurants in Croatia now.

A day or so before THanksgiving, I make a dough (just plain flour, salt and water) and roll it out thin and bake it until its brown. I make several of these "sheets" of baked dough. I then break them up into little pieces (kind of like chips). On Thanksgiving day, I take the juices from the cooked Turkey and pour it over these "chips" (they are actually called mlinci) until they are soft. I bake them in the oven for 10 or so minutes so that they really pick up the juices. We serve this with the meat instead of potatoes. It is a family favourite that I make several times throughout the year with goose, turkey, duck and sometimes chicken. You can also pour hot soup over the mlinci if you don't want them to be too greasy.Mmmmm can't wait!

To this day I have a whole pecan pie for Thanksgiving for myself hehe &amp; we've tried alternate styles too like mexican &amp; charlie brown/snoopy style but I still get my pecan pie http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif

My grandmother always makes canned peas and white corn as a side dish on Thanksgiving. It sounds really simple, but it's very yummy. Sometimes she puts onions in as well... I feel like it's not Thanksgiving without that dish. :-)

I get together with my large extended family for the holidays and I would have to admit that I am a sucker for that no- bake cherry cheese cake stuff. It's kind of a tradition, like pumpkin pie, in my family....
I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Bring it on http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif

My favorite food for Thanksgiving is dressing. But dressing in my opinion is not a dish that someone just automatically starts making and comes out great. I think it takes trial and error for you to become the ultimate dressing maker.

Hello everyone !!

New here, but had to answer this one... I have to agree, green bean casserole is probably one of my favorites. So good !!!

Another for Christmas has always been a Christmas Ham. I'm not much for turkey, but how I love ham... too bad the hubby doesn't otherwise we'd have it more often!

Have a great day everyone,

My favorite meal is Thanksgiving and so it is really hard to pick a favorite food, but it would have to be mashed potatoes with homemade turkey gravy!

Desert of course pumpkin pie with real, homemade whipped cream.

Also, hot apple cider and egg nog!

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I love the Turkey and homemade mashed potatoes and the sage stuffing all smothered in the homemade gravy. Everything else is also wonderful.

One thing that was a tradition in my mother's family was a special jello made with orange jello, orange sherbert, and mandarin oranges mixed together... it was delicious! But since my mom died in 2000, I think I made it once and it really was nobody else's favorite, so I stopped.

Today I have Thanksgiving with another branch of the family, and in that branch, the 'matriarch' is NOTORIOUS for always FAILING at making jello of any kind... the stories are hilarious!

So this year, after everyone had pretty much stopped eating, all of a sudden she says loudly, "Oh my goodness, I forgot all about one of the dishes I made!" She directed my nephew's fiance to get a bowl out of the fridge that contained the special dish........

Inside the nicely chilled decorative glass bowl, was a perfectly intact BOX OF JELLO.... UN-made! LOL

We all just roared with laughter! She has a really fun sense of humor, that one. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
