I would like to know what is affiliate marketing and how one can earn through it?

I agree with petermax77- You can't learn it from a two lines answer... However, affiliate marketing is basically to receive commissions when you sell other people/businesses products.

That is a good basic definition of affiliate marketing. There are a ton of opportunities out there, odds are if you can buy it on the internet, there is an affiliate program for it. I have worked with several affiliate programs over the past couple years, if you find the right one, you can make some decent money. Its all about having the right website/content.

Affiliate Marketing is when you get paid for selling someone else's products, like a commission. There is a good amount of money to be made from this, providing you select a product that is in demand, know who you are going to sell to and how you are going to put your product in front of these Customers who you target. Your role is to attract the Customers to buy, there are free ways of doing this or it can be costly.
You have to watch that you are not just building someone else's list, rather than your own.

Pretty much you are the middle man. Find a product and find a customer looking for the product. Join these two, if they buy you earn a commission.

Basically, Affiliate Program is nothing but a referral program, where you have to refer customers to the company to which you have joined as an affiliate. Most of the affiliate programs are absolutely free to join. When you join the affiliate program you are given a unique affiliate URL including the affiliate id. You just have to use that affiliate URL when you refer a customer to the company. You can promote it anywhere, anyway you want. You can select banners of the affiliate company and place it on your blog/website.

You just have to make sure when you refer a customer to the company you have to provide your unique affiliate URL to the customer and ask him to visit the company site by clicking on the URL. The affiliate software will automatically track the customers referred by you through the unique affiliate ID. Once the customer purchases any product or service from the company a specific amount of commission is credited to your affiliate account, which can be withdrawn after a particular amount is generated. Most of the affiliate programs allows you to withdraw the money after it reaches up to $50-100.

Affiliate program is one of the best ways to generate good income, all you need is to have good communication skills and convincing power. When these two things meet the success will be yours.
