Thumbs up Choosing a Niche - Tips!

Hi all,

I am selling off many of my niches and focusing on just a few. I have an eco-friendly living, wedding, travel, relationship sites and more. If you are interested the link is in my signature and I will be providing step by step mentoring to help you make money with the site you choose. Send me a PM if interested.

Got your site up, driving traffic and not making any money? Just send me a PM and I will take a peek and give you some ideas.

Here are some tips for choosing a niche. This is for the bigger site model, not the ton of tiny sites model.

DO pick a competitive niche. They are competitive because you can make money in them.

DO pick just one niche to start with. Really focus on building the content and driving traffic to the site.

NARROW your focus in the niche. Don't for example go for Weight Loss but go for a particular area of weight loss. However, don't go so narrow that you can't expand the niche.

DO spend a lot of time on keyword research. Picking the right keywords is crucial to your success.

DO try and find a mentor or take a course to help you along the way.

DO remember this is not easy money. You will have to work to earn money and drive traffic to your site.

DO select something you are passionate about and know something about. It really shows when you are enthusiastic.

Hope this helps!

LBD, I think you made all good points with choosing and succeeding in a niche. The only one that I have to disagree with is DO pick a niche that is competitive. Although this is the case sometimes, it is not always the case. For beginners, you probably do not want to get into a niche that is too competitive. And even for intermediate and advanced marketers, you don't always want to get into a niche that is too competitive.

So I don't totally agree with that one but you made some really good "DOs". Good post.

If you pick a niche that is competitive you are pretty assured that it is a money making niche. The key is to drill down within the niche and carve out your own niche within the niche so you can compete.

Some good niches to drill down into include

Weight Loss
Hair Loss
Hair Removal
Hair Growth
Acne
Cellulite
Hemorrhoids (and other health issues)
Travel
Green Living
Pets
Weddings
Dating/Relationships
Work at Home etc.

Good post! I tend to steer noobs away from those highly competitive niches because failure can be very discouraging for many people. I think the concept of a niche within a niche can be difficult for beginners to grasp. I think maybe a good idea for a set of articles - how to find your niche in a niche :-)

I agree that your niche should be something you're passionate about. I see a lot of people trying to sell things that they don't believe in or they don't like and they're not fooling anyone. People can always see when you're passionate about your work and when you're faking it.

Yep competitive niche is the one that can make you money, only if you are good in seo. However there are some webmaster who gain successes using social media (eg. Facebook and Myspace) and craiglist (or other major online classified websites).

SEO isn't the only way to get traffic... If you find a niche where people are buying, then you just go where the customers are...
