Hi Bellac
Everyone has pretty much said everthing but I want to highlight a few things:

1) You don't have to use Google Ads pay per click especially if you are on a budget. As long as your website is PROPERLY optimized with your chosen keywords it will appear in natural results. My cousins uses google's pay per click to promote their car detailing business and though they have gotten customers from it, they ended up paying a lot of money. Just ensure you know what you are doing before going into Google Ads.
2) Their keyword tool is very helpful in terms of finding different keywords that people use when they are searching.
3) When using keywords within your website or posts. Be careful not to overuse your keywords. I suggest placing your keywords in the Beginning, Middle, and End of your posts.
4) While you are building links to your websites, there is a helpful tool called Backtype alerts or is it Google Alerts?..i don't remember but what it does is it alerts you to comments being said around the blogosphere about a selected topic that you chose. So let's say you want to know what people are saying about jewelry. You enter "jewelry" and it sends you links to websites where people are talking about jewelry. There you would make your comments and leave a link back to your site.
5) Google webmaster tool is another great tool. It monitors your website and gives you suggestions if you have problems or errors on your website etc.

Good luck!
