I find my articles go higher in Google with 1 quality directory (ezine articles) then lots of small ones.
Also Infobarrel, eHow and Xomba do well at google. So you can get paid for what you write and have the potential to rank high in the search engines. However you just have to be careful with how you use the resource box at these sites. You want to make sure it fits in with TOS. In some cases it is easy to overlook the resource box. But it has worked well for me.
One article I wrote for one of the sites has earned me around $640 so far plus from adclicks plus it has driven a lot of traffic to my site.
