When starting out, you might want to do some writing for others to make ends meet so that you can start putting money away to get your business going. Don't simply use free sites because you want to "own" your own real estate when it comes to working online. It is great to use those sites to drive traffic, but don't depend on Squidoo, Blogger, etc for your total income because if they change their rules or don't like something about your site (which happens a lot), then you can be out of business in a snap!
