Default How to successfully search and find answers on the kgb challenge

We have put together the following information to help you pass the kgb_ Special Agent’s Challenge.
Remember:
• Don’t be frightened by the Challenge. You are allowed to take it as many times as you like.
• Open up a second browser window or multiple tabs so that you can easily search for the answers. To open a new browser window, simply double click on your Firefox icon again. Use Ctrl T to open a new tab.
• Remember that the Challenge is all about searching and finding the answers, not about knowing them.
• Ignore the timer clock. While we want you to move quickly, it can be a distraction.
• If you don’t know the answer and are unable to find it, don’t guess. It is better to mark “Don’t Know”
• The research portion of the Challenge is the most important. Some of these questions can be a bit tricky so work hard to get all of them answered correctly in order to pass the Challenge.

Now, on to some helpful information on searching and finding answers!

Search Techniques

Providing the best search results starts by understanding the question and picking the best keywords to find the answer quickly. If at first you don’t succeed, change up your keywords a bit.

Search engines ignore common words and characters such as where and how, as well as certain single digits and single letters such as is and a, because they tend to slow down your search without improving the results.

Here are some helpful search tips:

+ Searches: If a common word such as the or a is essential to getting the results you want, you can include it by putting a + sign in front of it. As we know, search engines ignore common words like: the, and, and a so if you want to find out information about The A-Team search by typing in: +the +a team

- Searches: You can exclude a word from your search by putting a - immediately in front of the term you want to avoid. For example, to find web pages about bass (the fish) which do not contain the word music, type: bass -music

~ Searches: You may want to search not only for a particular keyword, but also for its synonyms. Indicate a search for both by placing the tilde sign (~) immediately in front of the key word. For example, typing in ~happiness will also return results for pleasure, gladness and joy!

Phrase Searches: Search for complete phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks, so if you are looking for names type "John Smith" and it will only return results where the two are together, instead of every case of John and every case of Smith.

OR Searches: To retrieve pages that include either word A or word B, use an uppercase OR between terms, such as London OR Paris

Domain restrict Searches: If you know the website you want to search but aren't sure where the information is located within that site, you can use a search engine to search only that domain. For example, to find films filmed at Wellington College on The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) put site:The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) "Wellington College" into your search engine.

Number range Searches: Number Range can be used to specify that results contain numbers in a range you set. You can conduct a number range search by specifying two numbers, separated by two full stops, with no spaces. (Two full stops = two periods side by side). Be sure to specify a unit of measure or some other indicator of what the number range represents. For example, you might conduct a search for a DVD player in a specific price range by typing in DVD $100..200.

Define: If you want to quickly find the definition of a word or phrase you can simply type the word you wanted defined after the word Define: (with a colon after) For example, in Google type in Define: Shank to find out all the possible definitions of the word Shank.

Convert: If you want to convert from miles to kilometers or lbs to kilos, etc. just type in Google: 10 Miles to kilometers.

Calculator: You can use the Google search engine exactly like a calculator. To find out what 2(3+4) is, simply type 2(3+4) to find the answer.

Helpful Websites

It is extremely helpful to bookmark websites in your browser so that you can access them quickly. To do this, simply click on Bookmarks in your Firefox tool bar at the top of the browser and then click Bookmark This Page.
