Building a list and using an autoresponder serves one main purpose. Most people will not buy something they see the first time they see it. Case in point... You mentioned you have been thinking about trying out Market Samurai. I would bet that you have visited several pages discussing the product, maybe even read several reviews. However, you have not made a purchase yet.

Now if you visited a page that asked you to enter in your name and email address, and you did so, they can continue to market to you on a regular basis. They can send you emails talking about Market Samurai three times a week for the next three months.

It will dramatically increase sales. I used to interview, hire, and train a sales force for a national marketing company. To stay on top of my job I read all kinds of sales reports, books, etc. Most research out there suggests that someone has to be asked to buy something 5-7 times before they say yes. Our conditioned response is, "NO". Building a list gives you a chance to turn more of those NO's into YES's.

Building a list does 2 other things. It gives the people on your list a chance to get to know, like, and trust you. Not every email has to be a sales call. Maybe you found some new technique you are using in affiliate marketing that you want to share with your list. Or maybe you found a great thread on a forum that you think is beneficial for them to read. Maybe you send out an email discussing the challenges of being a wife, mother, and working from home all at the same time.

Second, it will allow you to market other products in the same niche. Using the same example from above... Maybe Market Samurai is just too expensive for some people on your list to take the plunge and they will never buy. However, they would love to hear about a new article submitter or a program that does all their social bookmarking for them.

As you can see, an autoresponder lets you maximize the traffic that you will be working hard to generate.
