I've seen this particular issue arise a lot lately:

I sent you a PM but it's not showing in my sent box so I don't know if it went through.

The default settings do not save your sent PMs to fix this follow the instructions below.
1. Click User CP In the blue bar above the thread lists. (Right click open in new tab is best to follow along.)
2. On the left find the section titled "Settings and Options" and click "Edit Options.
3. The second category is "Messaging and Notification" scroll down and check the 3rd to last box that reads "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default".
