I worked for a company of similar nature and didn't have to pay a monthly fee and article batches were actually assigned, not just up for grabs. So the administrator organized who got which assignments (with no fee to the writers). I suppose if there's a lot of work and a variety of content to be written, it could be lucrative for some...
