Many parents want to make the world a better place for their children. They do this by volunteering in their community. The question (actually it's two) this week:
What do you do to help your community? And, do you encourage your children to help?

Not quite sure if this is the kind of answer your looking for but thought we'd answer the question anyway. We don't volunteer in our community but we do contribe- civic clubs like the Lions Club have several auctions a year for different organizaions. We always donate something to be auction off and/or purchase a item. Last year we did a online auction for a little girl here who was critically ill. Her parents we so appreciative. When my(tricia) children were growing up we taught them to help others anytime they could. I'm sure Billie, myself and Ashley pawpaw will continue that with Ashley.

Sounds like volunteering to me. Nowadays many seem so focused on themselves - everything is about me, me, me. I was just wondering what everyone does to give something back where you live and do you encourage your children to do the same - school, charity groups, clubs, faith based groups etc.

Well lets see....my husband is the webmaster for three community rec sports sites. (he does an awesome job) We both help out whereever we can with the sports groups. My kids both participate. My son plays flag football and my daughter cheers. I coach a cheer squad. We all do fund raising for Deborah Heart Hospital. They saved my brothers life many moon ago! I led a brownie troop at one point... Several years back we went to a orphanage and gave Christmas gifts to the kids. My old employer developed the program and it was great. Plus it showed my kids that not everyone has it that great. It can always be worse. I know its really hard to find time to do community stuff but it teaches kids good values and the feeling of helping someone is such a high too much.

Well I dont know if this counts or not but I make sure we give all items that we dont want anymore to Goodwill etc.I see no sense of throwing items away when someone else can use them.

I'm *very* involved in my son's Cub Scout den (soon to be an official Boy Scout - May 17th!!)
There's a lot of emphasis on community service, and we can do it together...
Plus, all those kids make great free labor for fall and spring cleanups <grin>

I know scouts very well. Had the best time. Both of my sons are Eagle scouts. My husband was Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chairman for a lot of years. I was the Troop Treasurer, a Merit Badge Counselor and Advancement Chair plus I took scoutmaster training and went camping with them in the heat, humidity, cold and mud more times than I like to remember. I wear those Eagle pins proudly. I earned them!

I was actually planning on starting something like this summer, and was trying to decide on an activity. The boy scouts do a used clothing drive a few times a year. There is also a shoe drive, and a coat drive.
I'm w/ Peggy. Goodwill usually sees a lot of our old clothes.

Every couple months we do a clean out of the house to get rid of things that dont get usesd, worn etc... I get the kids involved too. They get a box to put toys or clothes or whatever in. Then it all gets packed up (washed if needed) and donated to either Goodwill or the VA. The boys enjoy helping out knowing they are giving to someone that might not have those things.
When we go to the park or whatever the boys are encouraged to pick up litter etc even if its not theirs. "Got to help the earth too mom, it doesnt have any hands" they tell me.
Occasionally we got to charity events run by the local womens club and firehalls usually there is something fun to do too but all the profits go to a good cause. Last one I went to was a sunday afternoon basket bingo and profit went to a local org.

Well I do daily volunteer time in my daughter's second grade class. I also help with all of the fundraising events and other events at the school.
As for what my girls do. We take their toys that are in really great condition that the girls don't play with anymore and take them to Women's shelters and children's hospitals. This makes the girls feel great and the kids really love all of the cool toys.
We also make sure to buy our Christmas tree for the Boy Scouts and save it for them for recycling. We also make sure to support the Girl Scouts by buying plenty of their cookies .

I volunteer in the classroom and the school library. My older daughter and I both belong to a social concerns/social fun club. This year we have done a coat drive and a book drive. Our school really emphasizes community service, so this year the kids have raised funds for the homeless, childrens cancer charities, and other groups. My husband volunteers a week each summer to a golf tournament. Our church has a sister church in Haiti and we participate in that by donating school supplies, etc as needed, also each Christmas we do a toy drive for the underpriv. My kids volunteer as altar servers and in the choir (I get them there, that is my contribution!).

How did I miss this topic when it was first posted?
I help the community by teaching my kids to volunteer. For many years I volunteered with domestic abuse survivors, but obviously that's not something a child can do.
Now we have a family volunteer evening each week working with dogs at our local rescue center. Feeding, watering, cleaning pens and socializing the dogs.
It won't save the world, but it is a place to start with animal loving kids. It teaches them the basics of caring for others.
Oh, and if you need a companion, adopt a couple while you are there!!

I work with the NH chapter of the Million Mom March. I've recently been elected to the board of directors, and do all kinds of things with them. Basically, in a nutshell...the Million Mom March is a national, chapter-based grass-roots organization, united with the Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence. We lobby for "common-sense" gun legislation which will keep our children safe. If you'd like to check out their website to see what's happening in your state go to http://www.millionmommarch.org

When I worked part time in the community, I volunteered at my kids' schools -- in the computer lab and in the library, and went on occasional field trips.
Now that I work 50 hours a week as a day care provider out of my own home, it's hard to get out.
But I still volunteer at church in various capacities, and help out at my daughter's swim meets.

I volunteer at our county's humane society one Saturday a week, I also spend time at our local retirement home (feed residents, comb hair, fluff pillows, take people for walks), and recycle.
