My son is 5 years old. I cannot get him interested in learning to tie his shoes, and I'm not really sure how to explain it either. I know everyone has their own little way of tying shoes. I'm right handed, and I like to hold the loop in my left hand and then the lace in the right hand goes around it and through the loop. But, I'm putting myself in my son's "shoes" (LOL), and see..if he has his shoes on and watches me tie them it's backwards to him (just like if he looks at me...my right arm is on HIS left)...did that make sense? LOL
Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions/ideas/tricks that any of you have used to teach your children to tie their shoes. I remember a movie w/ Adam Sandler (something "....Daddy" I believe) where he was teaching a boy, and I forgot how he explained it....all I remember is "Loop, Swoop, and Pull".

Anyway, all input is appreciated. Thanks so much!

Also (OT)..I still have some Gmail invites left if anyone wants one. Please email me your first and last name to iammykidzmom AT gmail DOT com.

Thanks everyone!

Laura,

I found these step by step directions on the net for tieing shoes. I hope it helped. I could not find the words to explain how we do the bunny hop here. Just one of those things that can only be explained by showing. lol

Pull the lace up to tighten them
Cross laces and pull one under the other
Make 2 bunny ears
Cross the bunny ears
Loop one ear over the other one
Then pull it thru and then pull it tight.

Best Wishes
Gina

With my kids, I found it was easier to use a lace going through a cardboard, sitting next to them or behind them, rather than practicing on the shoes first. Also, make sure you buy them super cool shoes with laces that they will have to tie themselves if they want to wear them. Have lots of patience - and be prepared to undo lots of knots.

We're at that same spot, my daughter will be 5 in a few days and starting kindergarten next year so she needs to learn to tie on her own too.

My mom sent me this website awhile back and I bookmarked it but haven't utilized it yet. Guess I should do so soon! Lots of different techniques listed, hopefully one of them will work for you (and us).
