Are there things I shouldn't send to the list?
Yes, lots of things. Ads, (except for your once-a-month allotment) Don't send chain letters, virus warnings, Neiman-Marcus cookie recipes, poems, stories, jokes, etc from other lists, messages typed in ALL CAPS (it's considered screaming), posts not related to being a work at home mom, hmmm, I'm sure there are more, but you get the idea.
Also, don't send messages that are meant for one or two people to the entire list.
